Fact 1* | CHARLES K. IRWIN, born Colborne, Ontario, 8 Jul 1824. Practiced dentistry at Oshawa, Ontario, for several years during which time he studied medicine. Took the course of study at the Rolph School of Medicine at Toronto, Ontario. Graduated from the medical college at Albany, NY, Jun 1856. Settled in Dunkirk, NY, and began the practice of medicine. When the Third Regiment was organized Doctor Irwin was made Surgeon, and was the only one of the original field officers who served with the regiment during its entire service. He performed the duties of Brigade Surgeon for some time; also acted as Surgeon-in- Chief of the Second Division, Third Army Corps. No man was more closely identified with the service of the Third Regiment than Surgeon Irwin. He was discharged with the regiment in Jun 1864, and resumed the practice of medicine at Dunkirk, New York, where he died 27 Jun 1866. On May 13th an arrangement having been made with the Confederates by which our wounded could be brought across the Rappahannock, Surgeon C. K. Irwin, Chaplain Wm. R. Eastman, and others, crossed the river under a flag of truce. During their search for wounded they learned of the death of Colonel [William O.] Stevens, and where he was buried. The body was taken from the grave, placed in an ambulance, and, in charge of Surgeon Irwin, brought into the Union lines. Judge William Stevens, father of the Colonel, met them at United States Ford, and they proceeded to regimental headquarters. His body was first buried near the old Wilderness Church, but a week later was removed by Surgeon C. K. Irwin, under flag of truce, to the camp of the regiment, and sent thence to Dunkirk. It rests in the cemetery at Fredonia close by the grave of his friend and comrade, Surgeon Irwin, who died three years afterward (1866). Married Name | As of 15 September 1951,her married name was Campbell. |
Marriage* | Gloria Elizabeth (BETTY) Jackson married Robert John Campbell on 15 September 1951. |
Death* | Gloria Elizabeth (BETTY) Jackson died on 16 April 2019 in Southbrook Retirement Lodge at age 89; CAMPBELL, GLORIA ELIZABETH "BETTY" (nee JACKSON) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gloria Elizabeth "Betty" Campbell on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, surrounded by her family at Southbrook Retirement Lodge. Betty was predeceased by her adoring parents, Howard Keith and Lucy Adeline Jackson (nee Shier); devoted and loving husband, Robert J. "Bob" Campbell and her eldest son, John Ross Campbell. Betty has left a void with her daughter Jane, loving son-in-law John Brillinger; her youngest son Jim, and caring daughter-in-law Angela, that will never be filled again. Betty was born in St. Catharines, on June 11, 1929 and moved during the Depression with her Mom and Dad to Toronto. She attended Rose Avenue Public School, Jarvis Collegiate and Northern Secondary School. Betty met Bob at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. They were both part of Ryerson's 1st graduating classes. Betty was in Fashion Design and won many awards for her designs. Her style and taste were classic. In 1955, Betty and Bob bought a lot on Canal Lake and built a cottage; which the family still shares today. The extended cottage families she knew and loved dearly were always part of her joy and happiness. Betty was a tireless fundraiser, patient driver to Princess Margaret Hospital, as well as a Captain with Canadian Cancer Society. Her involvement in many clubs and groups kept her active and healthy. She loved to sing in the choir at St. Bartholomew's and enjoyed music until the last day of her life. She and Bob and large groups of fun-loving dedicated Brampton Minor Hockey parents and players often raised funds through hockey dances and raffles, bottle drives and candy bar sales. She worked for 25 years, with Dr. D. Dickson, Dr. Z. Kidy and Dr. W. Allen as an Ophthalmic Assistant. She loved those doctors and each of her colleagues as her own family. Her pride and compassion for patients was admirable. The family would like to thank all the Staff at Southbrook Retirement Lodge, especially the Assisted Living Staff, for their never-ending care of Betty. A private family interment will take place at Brampton Cemetery. A Celebration of Betty's Life will be held in May or June. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty's memory may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of choice. |
Burial* | She was buried in Brampton Cemetery, Brampton, Peel County, Ontario, Canada. |
