Fact 1 | Hon. Robert Baldwin entered the Executive Council of Upper Canada in 1836 and became Solicitor General for Upper Canada in 1840. |
Death* | Hon. Robert Baldwin died on 9 December 1858 in Toronto, York County, Ontario, Canada, at age 54; Canadian Statesman. Premier of Canada West. The son of William Warren Baldwin, he pursued a career in the law and was admitted to the bar in 1825. That same year he fell in love with his first cousin Augusta Elizabeth Sullivan. The families discouraged the match initially, but on May 31, 1827 they were married. They had four children. Baldwin became involved in politics in 1828, and in 1829 had his first election victory. He dropped from the political scene in 1830. Not only did he dislike politics, he was kept busy with the demands of his law practice and family life, including a frail spouse. The 1834 birth of their fourth child Robert by surgical means furthered weakened his wife. Her death on January 11, 1836 at age 25 devastated Baldwin. She was interred in the family cemetery at Spadina, the family homestead. After his wife's death, Baldwin reluctantly returned to politics. As a gentleman, he considered public service a duty. After the union of the two Canadas in 1841, he became a member of its executive council, but soon resigned. Baldwin formed a Reform party administration with Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine, and became Premier of Canada West. They served together from 1842 to 1843, and again from 1848 to 1851. Baldwin established the University of Toronto. He retired from political life and his law practice in the early 1850's. He spent all his time at Spadina where he died and was buried in 1858; there is also a cenotaph for him at Saint James Cemetery in Toronto. His last years had left him even more obsessed with his deceased wife, and he left explicit instructions to his family as to the manner in which he was to be buried with her. This included his wish to have an abdominal incision that would match that which his wife had received at the time of their last child's birth. Eight years later, in 1866, his older son sold Spadina because he had come into financial difficulties. (This was after the January 1866 death of his sister Phoebe Maria, who had remained a spinster at Spadina at their father Robert's insistence, despite at least two offers of marriage.) The estate was purchased by businessman James Austin and remained in the Austin family for several generations. The house that James Austin built on the estate in 1866 is now a museum. Bio by Anne Philbrick; Findagrave Mem# 84028280. |
Burial* | He was buried in Baldwin Family Cemetery (Spadina), Toronto, York County, Ontario, Canada; The headstone for Robert Baldwin is in St. James Cemetery, Toronto. |
Fact 1 | Baldwin Street in Whitby was named after the Hon. Robert Baldwin. |
Fact 1* | Baldwin, Robert (1804-1858), states-man, was born at York ( Toronto ), Upper Canada , on May 12, 1804 , the eldest son of William Warren Baldwin and Phoebe Willcocks. He was educated at the Home District Grammar School, studied law under his father, and was called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1825. In 1829 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada, but at the general elections of 1830 he was defeated, and he did not again sit in the legislature until after the Union of 1841. His ability and his high character, however, early won for him a general esteem; and in 1836 he was appointed by Sir Francis Bond Head to the Executive Council of Upper Canada. His tenure of office lasted less than four weeks (February 20-March 12), as the result of a disagreement with the lieutenant-governor which brought about the resignation of the whole council. Later in the year, when in England, he submitted to the Colonial Office a memorandum in which, for the first time, the project of responsible government in Canada was fully and clearly elaborated. With the wing of the Reform party led by W. L. Mackenzie he had never, however, much sympathy; and it was significant that during the rebellion of 1837, Head confided to him the task of parleying with the rebels. In February, 1840, Baldwin was persuaded by Poulett Thomson to accept the post of solicitor-general of Upper Canada, and in February, 1841, he became solicitor-general of Canada West, with a seat in the Executive Council. At the same time he was elected as a Reformer to represent Hastings in the Assembly; and when the governor-general declined to reconstruct the administration to accord with the views of the Reformers, Baldwin resigned from the Council, and went into opposition. In September, 1841, he introduced into the Assembly a series of resolutions in favour of responsible government; and when the government was defeated in the House in September, 1842, it was to Baldwin that the new governor, Sir Charles Bagot turned to form an administration. Together with Louis Lafontaine, Baldwin formed a ministry-known as the first Baldwin-Lafontaine administration-which held office until the crisis of November 26, 1843 , when nine of the ten ministers resigned in consequence of a disagreement with Sir Charles Metcalfe. From 1843 to 1848 Baldwin was in opposition; but the defeat of the Draper government in the general elections of 1847 led to the formation in 1848 of the second Baldwin-Lafontaine administration, sometimes called "The Great Ministry". It was under this administration that the principle of responsible government in Canada was finally and indisputably established. Always a moderate Reformer, Baldwin found, however, as time went on, that he was out of sympathy with many of his more radical supporters; and when, in the session of 1851, a resolution favouring the abolition of his own creation, the Court of Chancery, was carried by a majority of Upper Canadian votes, he resigned from office. At the subsequent election, in 1851, he was defeated in North York by a considerable majority; and he thereupon retired to private life. In 1854 he gave his approval to the formation of the union of the Conservatives and the "Baldwin Liberals" in what came to be known as the Liberal Conservative party. The same year he was created a C.B.-a somewhat paltry recognition of his public services. He died in Toronto on December 9, 1858. In 1827 he married his cousin, Augusta Elizabeth (d. 1836), daughter of Daniel Sullivan; and by her he had two sons and two daughters. The Baldwin papers are in the Toronto Public Library. Death* | Rev. Canon William Warren (Bill) Baldwin died on 10 December 2022 in Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada, at age 92; THE REVEREND CANON WILLIAM WARREN BALDWIN October 8, 1930 – December 10, 2022 William Warren Baldwin passed away peacefully in Ottawa at 12:52 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at the age of 92. Beloved husband of Alberta Eleanor (nee MacKillop), loving father of Pauline Elizabeth (Yoshi), William Paul (Akiko), and Robert Bertrand (Masae), cherished grandfather of William Joe (Mayumi), Tiffany Yuki (Koji), Michelle Yuka, Tomohiko (Arina), Megumi, Sarah (Tomohito), Toranosuke, and Rachel, and inspiring great-grandfather of Taisei, Aurelia, Amelia, Kentaro, and Oliver. He was truly fond of all members of the extended family both on the Baldwin/Lightbourn and MacKillop/Russel sides. He will be remembered by all who knew him, for his love and support. Bill Baldwin was born in Ottawa on October 8, 1930 to father Robert Henry Warren and mother Mabel Dorothy Lightbourn, and raised with his sister Katherine Elizabeth. He attended Glebe Collegiate Institute, when as a child, he had a special love for other children and animals with special needs. Later in life he became absorbed watching ant colonies and rejoiced with the birds and rabbits along the Rideau River, during his long daily walks. Not surprisingly, cats tended to have the upper seat in the house. A graduate of Trinity College, University of Toronto, Bill was ordained a priest of the Anglican Church of Canada and started his career in South Porcupine (now Timmins), in Northern Ontario. Before long, he was sent to Japan as a missionary with Eleanor by his side. In Japan, he provided strength and assistance to the Korean minority and to U.S. servicemen both in Japan and Korea. Twenty years and three grown children later, Bill and Eleanor were back in Canada. Bill took on the responsibilities of Director of Theological Education by Extension (TEE) for the Diocese of Caledonia in northern British Columbia. In 1984, the Diocese of Moosonee offered him a position in the James Bay region of Quebec at St. Philip’s in the village of Chisasibi, where he remained as rector until his retirement in 1997. Bill often spoke of how God had sent him half-way around the world to discover what his true calling was. He dedicated his life to serving God by reaching out to those who were hurt by the “brokenness of our humanity”, always striving to find opportunities for healing – opportunities to make a difference. “When God closes a door, He opens a window”. After retirement, Bill found other ways to remain active. He continued pursuing social justice issues, at one point volunteering with the Christian Peacemaker Teams in Palestine. His strong belief in the benefits of interfaith communication led him to his involvement with the Christian-Muslim Dialogue. He was also associated with the Carleton University Ecumenical Chaplaincy, Kairos Spirituality-for-Social-Justice Centre, and the National Council on Canada Arab Relations Ottawa. He co-wrote a book on his experiences in Palestine with Samah Sabawi entitled, The Journey to Peace in Palestine – From the Song of Deborah to the Simpsons. In 2007, he received an award from the National Council on Canada Arab relations, and in 2012, he was awarded Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions. Always humble, Bill was a man of enormous power. His greatest hobbies included reading and politics. He loved and was loved by everyone he touched. He will continue to make a difference. Friends are invited to visit the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Conor) Ottawa, on Saturday, December 17, 2022, after 12 noon until time of the Memorial Service and celebration of his life in the Chapel at 1pm.
