Wallace had been in the Michigan National Guard for four and a half years before volunteering for this adventure (1).
The brothers were raised in the Methodist Church (1) and where considered to be quite the “dandies” as told by Wayne Clark Shier Jr., and that the brothers squandered the family fortune by his wife Erika Shier.

After Wallace enlisting in the Canadian Army he was assigned to the 97th Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment (1) known as the American Legion do to the high number of American recruits. He was then shipped off to “Exhibition Camp” just outside of Toronto, Canada. The 97th soon became a force to be reckoned with in competitions with other Canadian units (6).
In June of 1916 the unit was sent to Camp Aldershot near Halifax, Nova Scotia for advanced trench training. In September of that year the 97th sailed to England. Do to a series of unfortunate events on the way, consisting of desertions and unfounded embezzlement charges; the unit was tagged with the nickname of the “Lost Legion”. When the 97th arrived at Otter Pool Camp, near Shorncliffe, Kent, England, the once proud American Legion was broken up and its men used for replacement of casualties at the front (6).

A wide circle of friends and acquaintances will learn with regret of the death at his home in Uxbridge of Dr. C. Walter C. Shier, Ba.A., M.D. in his 76th year, on SUnday, December 11th, 1944, after being in poor heath for several months. The late Walter C. Shier was born at Leaskdale, Township of Scott, in 1969, the fifth son of James Shier and Mary Ann Mooney. His paternal grandfather came from Adare, Limerick County, Ireland, in 1826 and settled on a farm in the fifth concession of Brock and both his parents were raised in this township. They were of Irish Palatine extraction. Tis ancestor had a brother who located in Scotland just before he himself went to Limerick. Two descendents of this brother were medical doctors in Demara and another descendent, John Shier, was a Provincial Land Surveyor in Whitby during the early settlement of the County of Ontario.
