Support & Communication trenches continued until 8:15 p.m., doing considerable damage to front line and Supports & dugouts in support line. ENEMY seen to leave his trench in attack at 8:15 p.m. & driven by Rifle, M.G. & Artillery fire. Capt. Adams remained cool and had situation in hand at all times. Signals were cut but sufficient service maintained by runners – CAPT. G. O. McNair killed. 8 killed and 14 O.R. wounded – shell shock, missing 12 O.R. Morale of all ranks splendid and prevented ENEMY from penetrating our line - quiet rest of night but ENEMY appeared nervous and sent up many flares.

Note: The War Diaries for the 58th Canadian Infantry Battalion as well as Canada’s Virtual Memorial (CVM) state that Capt. G.O McNair was killed on May 1, 1916. Although CVM states that Thomas Edward Shier was killed on May 2, 2016 as the War Diaries state there were no casualties that date, we must assume that Pte. Thomas Edward Shier was actually killed on May 1 or he suffered injuries that day and passed on May 2, 2016.

Do to a series of unfortunate events on the way, consisting of desertions and unfounded embezzlement charges; the unit was tagged with the nickname of the “Lost Legion”. When the 97th arrived at Otter Pool Camp, near Shorncliffe, Kent, England, the once proud American Legion was broken up and its men used for replacement of casualties at the front (6).
