Millie is survived by her daughters, Gloria McDonald (Randy) of Victoria BC, and Mary Tiberghien (Peter) of Grand Forks BC; grandchildren, Seanna McDonald, Jenna Flynn, Sabrina Brown (Nathan), Sarah Robinson (Dan), and Robert McDonald (Amber); great grandchildren, Ashley, Jasmine, Noah, Henry, Everett, Skyler and Harlin; her siblings, Bill Osborne, Lou Osborne, Ron Osborne and Shirley Gunn and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Sparling and her daughter, Sharon Sparling. Millie was born in July, 1922 in Kingston, Ontario to Elijah and Blanche Osborne. She grew up in northern Saskatchewan during the Depression, one of 12 children. She enlisted in the RCAF during WWII and she served overseas in London until the end of the war in 1945. She married Bob in 1946. Millie worked for BC Tel as an operator for several years. She was a homemaker, and very involved in the Girl Guides of Canada in the 1960’s. They raised their family in Richmond BC and spent many summers in Birch Bay with family and friends. They loved to entertain and Millie was the hostess of many Grey Cup and New Year's Eve parties. Millie and Bob moved to Cranbrook, BC in 1974 where they remained for 30 years; spending their retirement camping with their grandkids, travelling Canada and the US in their truck and trailer and enjoying winters in Arizona. They became involved with the Lions Club International and later the Valley Community Church in Wasa BC. Millie was a feisty woman with a quick tongue that was at times sharp but when she loved, she loved with all her heart. She never had an opinion that she kept to herself. She loved animals and always had a fat dog by her side and many bird feeders in her yard. She had a great sense of humour and was a flirt right to the end. Millie loved to knit, play cards, garden, RV, paint, bake and spend time with her family and friends. Dementia had been stealing her mind for years but her spirit remained strong. She spent her last few years as a resident of The Lodge at Broadmead and Millie loved her time there. She spent much of her time at Broadmead in the art studio and her room was covered in her art work. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Broadmead for their exceptional care of Millie and for loving her as much as we do. The family would also send like to send extra thanks to Kirk Seeley for making Millie his honorary grandmother, and for the time he spent with her in her last couple of months. A memorial service to honour Millie will be held in the spring of 2016, date to be confirmed. |
