(Witness) Fact 1 | Mabel Beatrice Shier witnessed the Fact 1 of Morley Roy Shier; On October 3, 1911, Montgomery as Mrs. Ewan MacDonald was introduced as the minister’s new wife and honoured with a reception dinner at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Three of the families she met that evening – The Shiers, the Brookses and the Lapps – would never have expected to be mentioned in her books. Catherine* and James Shier’s farm was located a few acres away from the Leaskdale Church. They had three children in 1911: Mabel was nineteen; Morley, sixteen, was a student at Uxbridge High School; and Harvey was nine.
The sons [of the three families] would have known the MacDonald’s for only a few years, but their families and relations became friends especially the younger siblings because they grew up during the fourteen years that Montgomery created and directed the Young People’s Association.
Morley Roy Shier knew “Mrs. Mac” for about two years before he left to attend the University of Toronto’s teacher-preparation program. Bob Brooks was in Ewan’s congregation for about 6 years before he enlisted. Gordie Lapp was at home foe only a year before leaving to work and study pharmacy. They joined three different military units at different times between 1915 and 1917. These three young men represent the sacrifices that small communities all over Canada invested in the world conflict. Montgomery planned, wrote and revised Rainbow Valley during the final years of the war, from 1917 to 1918. Montgomery penned the dedication to the pilot Morley Shier and the two soldiers Bob Brookes and Gordie Lapp, when she finished the Rainbow Valley manuscript in late December 1918, three months after the death of the last casualty, Flight Lieutenant Shier.
Several Shier family members were Montgomery’s friends, including Morley’s cousin, Mary Shier McLeod. Readers of Montgomery’s journals will recall Morley’s uncle, Dr. Walter Columbus Shier, who was a physician in Leaskdale and Uxbridge. Dr. Shier attended the MacDonald family and was the first doctor to treat Ewan’s depression. Another uncle was Rob Shier** who lived in Zephyr; his third wife was Lillis Harrison (Lily Reid), Montgomery’s household helper from 1912 to 1915 and a trusted friend throughout Montgomery’s life.
Morley was a teacher first at Corson’s Siding, northeast of Leaskdale and then at Earl Grey School in Toronto. Shortly after Montgomery began work on Rainbow Valley, Morley stared pilot training. He went to England in May 1918, after basic flight training, to learn combat and reconnaissance skills at the British advanced flying schools. He was assigned to the 256th Royal Air force Squadron formed in June 1918 at Seahouses, Northumberland. The squadron did coastal surveillance for German submarines and flew two-seater Canadian built de Havilland DH-6 planes, with a range of about four hours of flight. One of the many nicknames for the DH-6 was “the Flying Coffin”.
Shier became an active RFC pilot in June 1918 at the age of twenty-three. About one-quarter of the RFC squadron crews were Canadian. Most RFC combat pilots survived an average of about three weeks once they began their combat flights. Although reconnaissance pilots were not exposed to enemy fire as often as combat pilots, the risk to them was still significant; they were not armed but could carry bombs, and parachutes were not allowed because they were too heavy. After two months of flying, Flight Lieutenant Shier and his plane went down in the fog in the North Sea on Sept 6, 1918 about twenty miles from shore. Montgomery did not hear of Morley’s death until a month later, three days before Germany and Austria agreed to peace in October 1918.Shier’s name is on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton, England, erected by the Imperial Ware Graves Commission with the names of those lost at sea. Members of the Shier family placed a marker in the cemetery at Leaskdale and a plaque in the church to honour him at home.

Fact 1 | From the DAWSON files of the Cannington Historical Society:
An Interesting Family; Biographical Sketch of on of Brock's oldest families - the late Mrs. Wm. Dawson.
In Cannington on Nov. 1st 1917 Mrs. Wm. Dawson (nee Margaret Shier) familiarly known too many in Brock as “Aunt Margaret” passed to her long rest at the ripe age of 96 years and six months. From the manuscript of F book soon to be published by Dr. Shier of Uxbridge giving a history of the Shier family, the following facts in reference to this fine old lady have been collected: Margaret Dawson was born in Limerick County, Ireland May 15, 1821. At the age of fourteen she came with her father’s family to Canada, and lived at home on lot 5 in the 14th concession of Brock. On November 2, 1841 she was married to William Dawson. She had a family of seven sons and five daughters nine of whom grew to maturity on their father’s farm in North Brock. Her husband died many years ago, and since then has lived in Cannington with an unmarried son and daughter. She was the last surviving member of the fourth Irish generation of Shiers, twenty-one of whom came from Limerick between 1822 and 1835 to settle in Brock. She was physically active and mentally bright to within a week previous to her death. Her grandfather, Philip Shier, was the founder of the family of Shiers in Ireland. He was a native of the Palatinate, a German province which before the wars of Napoleon, consisted of territory on the River Rhine, part of which today is known as Alsace-Lorraine. The wars of Louis XIV of France against the Palatinate drove many Palatines from their native province on the Rhine to seek homes in a foreign country. Philip Shier was among them. In August, 1709, together with 50 other Palatines he settled on the estate of Lord Southwell near Rathkeale, Limerick County. The cottages these settlers formed a little village which received the name Balligarane now called Ballingran. Her father, Jacob Shier, grandson of Philip, lived on the old Shier homestead in Ballingran. In 1835 he came to Brock accompanied by his wife, Anne Sparling, and all his family of five sons and five daughters, save one son who had preceded him. His oldest son George had come to Brock three years previously as a kind of prospector, preparing the way for the rest of the family. The members of this family were especially remembered and enquired after in the summer of 1901, sixty-six years after they left Ireland, by Miss Barbara and Mrs. Sarah Ruttle, two old ladies who were grandnieces of Barbara Heck when they were visited at the old Ruttle homestead in Ballingran by Deputy Minister of Agriculture for Ontario, the late Prof. C. C. James. Jacob Shier and his two oldest sons George and Phillip, together with their respective families lived on Lot 5, concession 14 of Brock. From these three families the locality came to be known as “The Shier Settlement” a name it retains to this day, though it is more briefly designated “The Settlement”. It is paradoxical that, although the members of these three families consisted at one time of thirty-five persons, there is only one, Mrs. J.J. King, nee Rebecca, the youngest daughter of the late Philip Shier, living in the Brock Settlement to-day. Margaret Dawson was the last surviving member of the family of Jacob Shier. Her brothers and sisters who predeceased her were as follows: George died in 1890, aged 84; Philip died in 1880, aged 71; Mrs. Robert Bennett, died in 1878 aged 66; Mrs. Daniel King, died in 1882, aged 68; Adam died in 1889 aged 79; Mrs. George St. John died in 1902 aged 84; Mrs. John Gibson died in 1903 aged 79; Joseph died in 1891 aged 61; John died in 1896 aged 66. Mrs. Bennett’s home was in New Orleans, Joseph and John lived in Armour, Ont. The others resided in Brock. Mrs. Dawson’s children were as follows: Philip of Beaverton, Mrs. Daniel Chambers, deceased; George of Derryville; William James died in childhood; Mrs. James Dawson deceased; John of Cannington; Richard H. of Roche Percy, Sask; James A. died in childhood; Miss Susie of Cannington and Mrs. Thos. Burgess of Cannington. |
