Fact 1From A Stake in the West: Carnduff and District

The following information on the Family of John Adam Shier was copied from the History Book “A stake in the West: Carnduff and District” starting on page 854. This report was submitted by Lorna Douglas.
JOHN ADAM SHIER, son of Philip Shier Sr. was born July 1, 1857. He was known as “Long John” because of his height, for he measured six feet, four inches in his sock feet. His wife, Mary Ann Dukelow, was a sister of Mrs. John “Wesley” Shier.
On October 17, 1898, through an agent, he made application to homestead the SE 10-2-34 W1st. On June 19, 1899, he purchased the SE 15-2-34 W1st from the C.P.R., and this was where he lived with his wife and seven children while proving up on his homestead. He was forty-two years of age at the time.
In 1899 he broke seventy acres of land, and in 1900 he cultivated these acres. In 1901 he broke fifty-five more acres and cultivated seventy acres. He kept, on the average, about four horses and four cattle. On January 20, 1903, John A. Shier received the patent for his homestead.
As a young man, John A. worked in a boiler factory, and as a result he lost much of his hearing. Being a kind, generous amiable man, he was well liked by all who knew him. Mary Ann was an excellent seamstress and made most of the family’s clothes. She also did all the baking, gathering hops from the river hills to use as yeast in making bread. She supplied the bread for Communion at Church in the Florence School. Because of his poor hearing, John A. did not attend church but was a faithful reader of the Bible. They farmed in the Florence district until about 1925, when Mary Ann’s health began to fail. They sold the farm to a Mr. Parker from Iowa, but during the Depression, he could not make the payments and the land went back to Mr. Shier. The farm was then run for a number of years by his son, Russell.
The last ten years of Mrs. Shier’s life was spent as an invalid and she was patiently cared for by her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Shier both passed away in 1941. Their Children were Walter, Arletta, Alma, Russell, Lucy, Herbert and Olive.
WALTER, Eldest son of John A. Shier, was born November 4, 1883, in Ontario. He married Susan Spencer, daughter of William Spencer of the Florence district. For some years Walter lived at Amulet and Ogema, Sask. He passed away sometime during the fifties. They had one daughter, Phyliss, who was raised and educated at Carnduff. In 1929, she went to Winnipeg and took a secretarial course and then went to work for the London Life Insurance Co. until 1951, when she married Laurie Newton of Tweed, Ontario. They made their home in California. Laurie died in 1973. Phyliss still resides in Vallejo, California.
ARLETTA, eldest daughter of John A. Shier, married Walter Herbert Shaw.
ALMA, second daughter of John A. and Mary Ann, married John Fawcett. They had two daughters, Margaret and Grace, and one son, Jack. Margaret married Floyd Haughton of Carnduff. Grace died in a car accident in California in the 1960’s. Jack was a cook in the Armed Services. He lived in Barrie, Ontario until his death in 1970/
RUSSELL, the second son, married Eliza Sedore of Carnduff on December 27, 1917. They farmed on the Philip Shier farm for many years, then moved to his father’s homestead on the SE 10-2-34 W1st in the Florence district. They had fifteen children, thirteen of whom are living. Their eldest daughter, June, died in the fire that totally destroyed their home in 1928. Marshal lost his life in World War 11.
In 1934 Russ and Eliza left the Carnduff area and moved to the Kinistino area. He farmed in the Glen Mary district. He also farmed and had a blacksmith shop in the Horseshoe Bend district. In 1940, the family moved into the village of Weldon where they lived until 1968. Russ passed away on August 15, 1972 and is buried in Carnduff Cemetery. Eliza lives in Prince Albert, Sask. Their living children are: Harold, Norma, Donald, Elva, Allan, Verda, Jack, Dorothy, Olive, Avis and Mavis, Walter, and Erva.
LUCY, was the third daughter of John A, Shier, she married Howard Jackson of Winnipeg. For many years they lived in Toronto. They had one daughter, Betty, who is married to Robert Campbell. Lucy lived in a nursing home in Brampton, Ontario. Lucy passed away in April, 1979.
HERBERT ROY SHIER FAMILY – by Edna Shier
Herbert Roy Shier, the third son of John A. Shier and Mary Anne Dukelow, was born at Beaverton, Ont., Aug. 16, 1891. He came west with his parents at the age of nine in April, 1899. Three families of “Shiers” came at the same time and settled in the Florence district where they received their education at the Florence School. I believe the school district was formed after their arrival from the East and I have heard Herb tell how the children ran and played on the Souris River Hills, like Indians, the first few months. His mother baked bread for the families and one week baked 56 loaves – loaves two or three times the size of the baker’s loaves of today.
The school also served as the church with the Methodist Minister from Carnduff serving the community.
By the early teens, John A., as he was called, had acquired considerable land and livestock, so Herb remained on the farm with his father until John retired to Carnduff, after selling the farm to Mr. Parker, an American. This was in 1920.
Herb then worked with C.W. Lownsbrough in the garage business and on December 28, 1921, he married Edna J. Emrick. The Emricks had come west in 1913 from Orillia, Ont. Edna was born at Beatrice, Ont., Dec. 18, 1899, and received her education at Haileybury, Ont. and Orillia, finishing at Carnduff. She worked in the Merchant’s Bank at Carnduff for three years and was a member of the first “Ladies Curling Club” at Carnduff in 1918.
Herb and Edna moved to |Glen Ewen in 1923 where Herb bought grain for the Federal Grain Company for some years. He later built a garage and operated it until 1936, when he moved his family and belongings to Ponoka, Alberta. Alter five years there, in the garage business, he moved to Calgary and worked for the C.P.R., during war and later with Robinson Machine and Supply. He passed away on Nov. 25, 1976 and is buried in Queens Park Cemetery.

Death*John B. Shier died on 11 September 2021 in McFarland, Wisconsin, United States, at age 91; MCFARLAND - John B. Shier, age 91, of McFarland, Wis., and Gold Canyon, Ariz., died unexpectedly at home Sept. 11, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Carol Bevins Shier; and their children, Lizabeth Shier (Richard) Herlich, Andy (Gina) Shier, Peter (Elizabeth Goble) Shier and Laura (Rodney Maack) Shier; grandchildren, Cory (Sadie) Shier, Lacey Herlich (Ryan) Hall, Zachary Herlich, Jesse Maack and Erik Maack; and great-grandchildren, Blake Hall, Michael and Jack Goble.

John was born March 1, 1930, to Hilbert and Helene (Heins) Shier of Gillett, Wis. A 1952 graduate of Lawrence College in Appleton, John became a high school teacher and coach, starting in East Troy, and then teacher, coach, and Principal Shier for nine years at Owen-Withee High School. Earning his master’s degree from UW-Stout, John accepted the position of principal at Edgerton High School, where he remained for 27 years until his retirement in 1990. John was an educator at heart and enjoyed engaging others in lively debates, instilling in his own words, "an appreciation of the Socratic Method."

An avid, accomplished athlete for all his life, John played baseball for a St. Louis Browns farm team, college football, recreational tennis, and handball, but was best known as an excellent golfer. John made custom golf clubs and was a sought-after golf instructor, teaching for a number of years at Coachman’s Golf Resort in Edgerton. John was still golfing at 91!

John also loved travelling, (especially vacationing in Door County), working in his gardens, and cheering on the Packers, UW Badgers, and the Cubs.

John’s family would like to thank all of his friends who over the years have brought him much happiness, fun and support.

If you would like to make a donation, two of John’s favorite organizations are the Salvation Army and Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Death*John Henry Shier died on 5 March 2012 at age 87; John Henry Shier was born in Pasadena, California on June 11, 1924. He was born to Rose and Edward Shier, and was one of 5 boys. John's brothers are Lloyd, Harold, Earl and David. John's father was a building contractor, so it was not a surprise that upon John's return from World War II, he started and maintained a successful painting business for over 40 years.
John met his wife, Ann, after he returned from the War and after Ann immigrated from Ireland. John and Ann were married for over 50 years.
John was a loving Son, Brother, Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Friend to us. The most important part of my Dad's life was us, his Family and Friends. In his youth, he was resourceful and determined during the years of the Great Depression and its aftermath. He was a paperboy, soda jerk, and someone who never backed away from a fight. He was a Warrior. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and fought in Italy with the 361st Infantry. He was eventually captured and served as a prisoner of war in Germany before being liberated by his Brother - Lloyd's army unit at the end of the war.
John was a Man of Integrity who worked very hard throughout his life to provide for his wife Ann and his sons Dan and Jack. John was very easy going and happy. He had a very warm and welcoming spirit about him, an embracing hand shake, an outgoing demeanor and smile that lit up a room.
John loved and was very proud of his Grandchildren - Zackary, Samantha, Jacob, Shannon, Piper-Jane and Tessa-Ann.....as well as his Daughter-In-Laws Amy and Terri.
John lived life with 'Optimism'. He was an optimist who loved to please others. He was not critical of people. He really didn't have an unkind bone in his body.
John is remembered for the good nature, care, and love that he brought to so many of our lives. Rest well our Warrior, beloved Brother, Husband, Father, Grandpa and Friend.
Burial*He was buried in Live Oak Memorial Park, Monrovia, Los Angeles County, California, United States.
