Fact 1From Aflimerick.org Alliance française de Limerick is saddened to learn of the recent death of our past Présidente, Lorna Shier.
Lorna was president of Alliance française de Limerick from 1994 to 2013. She was a longtime franchophone, acquiring her fluency in French when she works as an au pair in France during the mid sixties.  Having studied and worked there, she returned to Limerick in 1974 where she  joined Alliance Française and attended classes, eventually obtaining the prestigious  Diplome de Langue Française from Alliance Française Paris in 1992. Around this time, Lorna was asked to join the committee and she displayed a business sense and a strong work ethic that soon saw her elected as Présidente.
During her time as Présidente, Lorna dedicated herself to the continued success of Alliance française in Limerick, she introduced the DELF/DALF exams and oversaw the relocation to the current site at 7 Pery Square.
Whenever she could, Lorna travelled to France both for holidays and Alliance business as a committee member. She continued to support Alliance Française after her retirement and joined us to celebrate La Fete Nationale many times.
May she rest in peace.

Married NameHer married name was Whitby.
Birth*Mabel Barbara Shier was born on 2 December 1930 in London, England, Great Britain
Death*She died on 13 July 2023 in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, at age 92; "Barbara" Whitby (Shier)
Mabel "Barbara" Whitby (Shier)
“We are such stuff as dreams are made on;
and our little life is rounded with a sleep.”
Shakespeare. The Tempest.

Mabel Barbara Whitby (nee Shier), 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on July 13, 2023, in Truro, NS. Born in London, England on December 2, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mabel (nee Welsher) Shier.

Barbara’s adventurous spirit led her to immigrate to Canada, where she formed a deep and spiritual bond with the land. Homesick and overshadowed by the immensity and vastness of the terrain she now found herself in, she was surprised to discover, in the rocks and sea all around her, an unexpected continuity. Holding the familiar and ancient dark stones in her hands, she was led to explore and make new connections between the prehistoric archaeology she was familiar with in England and the rich history that she recognized was here too embedded, whose life and story was etched in the very stones and artifacts she collected. Her novel work in this field sparked great public interest (she gave many local radio interviews and lectures at the time) which eventually led to the establishment of an archaeological department in Memorial University. This was a life-long interest and she continued to participate in archaeological digs well into her eighties, shovel in hand and a contented gleam in her eye.

Her love of history, and of books and writing (she authored numerous books and short stories) was a passion she maintained throughout her whole life. Among her many interests and loves, and reflected often in her writing, was a compassion for and affinity with elephants. Her connection with elephants began as a child and was cemented afresh during a long stay in Sri Lanka, where she spent time in an elephant orphanage.

A traveler by nature, Barbara did not just visit places but experienced them, making the places she traveled to a part of her life story and her writing. Barbara was a trail blazer – whether as a female archaeologist in a field that had few women, back-pack in hand and thumbing a ride on a passing boat to get to a remote site of interest, to being among the first Catholic women to earn a Master of Divinity degree from the Atlantic School of Theology in the 1970s. In her seventies, she gamely signed up as ship’s crew on an expedition to map the ocean floor. Her life journey was a spiritual quest that found her embarking on many paths and religions, always with a thirst to learn. Her extensive and eclectic library sustained her children and her grandchildren as an invaluable resource for all. No matter the subject, Barbara could produce the perfect book out of thin air.

Barbara is survived and honoured by her two daughters, Philippa Pictou and Andrea Riser; five grand children, Gordon Pictou, Karen Pictou, Amber Colp, Arthur Patterson, and Ilona Patterson; nine great grandchildren, Destiny Pictou, Ansala’wit Pictou, Cedar Pictou, River Pictou, Jenaya Barton-Pictou, Lochlann Pictou, William Pictou, Myia Willcott and Naveya Willcott, and four great great grandchildren, Dallas Pictou, Richard Pictou, Nova Pictou, and Forrest Pictou; a brother, Roger Shier, and three nieces, Jennifer Purchase, Deborah Richardson, and Frances Kershaw.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Peter Shier.

Her sharp wit, inquisitive mind, child-like imagination, and capacity for captivating storytelling will all be missed. But most of all, her always-present love remains in our hearts, always.

(Witness) Fact 1Mabel Beatrice Shier witnessed the Fact 1 of Morley Roy Shier; On October 3, 1911, Montgomery as Mrs. Ewan MacDonald was introduced as the minister’s new wife and honoured with a reception dinner at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Three of the families she met that evening – The Shiers, the Brookses and the Lapps – would never have expected to be mentioned in her books. Catherine* and James Shier’s farm was located a few acres away from the Leaskdale Church. They had three children in 1911: Mabel was nineteen; Morley, sixteen, was a student at Uxbridge High School; and Harvey was nine.

The sons [of the three families] would have known the MacDonald’s for only a few years, but their families and relations became friends especially the younger siblings because they grew up during the fourteen years that Montgomery created and directed the Young People’s Association.

Morley Roy Shier knew “Mrs. Mac” for about two years before he left to attend the University of Toronto’s teacher-preparation program. Bob Brooks was in Ewan’s congregation for about 6 years before he enlisted. Gordie Lapp was at home foe only a year before leaving to work and study pharmacy. They joined three different military units at different times between 1915 and 1917. These three young men represent the sacrifices that small communities all over Canada invested in the world conflict. Montgomery planned, wrote and revised Rainbow Valley during the final years of the war, from 1917 to 1918. Montgomery penned the dedication to the pilot Morley Shier and the two soldiers Bob Brookes and Gordie Lapp, when she finished the Rainbow Valley manuscript in late December 1918, three months after the death of the last casualty, Flight Lieutenant Shier.

Several Shier family members were Montgomery’s friends, including Morley’s cousin, Mary Shier McLeod. Readers of Montgomery’s journals will recall Morley’s uncle, Dr. Walter Columbus Shier, who was a physician in Leaskdale and Uxbridge. Dr. Shier attended the MacDonald family and was the first doctor to treat Ewan’s depression. Another uncle was Rob Shier** who lived in Zephyr; his third wife was Lillis Harrison (Lily Reid), Montgomery’s household helper from 1912 to 1915 and a trusted friend throughout Montgomery’s life.

Morley was a teacher first at Corson’s Siding, northeast of Leaskdale and then at Earl Grey School in Toronto. Shortly after Montgomery began work on Rainbow Valley, Morley stared pilot training. He went to England in May 1918, after basic flight training, to learn combat and reconnaissance skills at the British advanced flying schools. He was assigned to the 256th Royal Air force Squadron formed in June 1918 at Seahouses, Northumberland. The squadron did coastal surveillance for German submarines and flew two-seater Canadian built de Havilland DH-6 planes, with a range of about four hours of flight. One of the many nicknames for the DH-6 was “the Flying Coffin”.

Shier became an active RFC pilot in June 1918 at the age of twenty-three. About one-quarter of the RFC squadron crews were Canadian. Most RFC combat pilots survived an average of about three weeks once they began their combat flights. Although reconnaissance pilots were not exposed to enemy fire as often as combat pilots, the risk to them was still significant; they were not armed but could carry bombs, and parachutes were not allowed because they were too heavy.

After two months of flying, Flight Lieutenant Shier and his plane went down in the fog in the North Sea on Sept 6, 1918 about twenty miles from shore. Montgomery did not hear of Morley’s death until a month later, three days before Germany and Austria agreed to peace in October 1918.Shier’s name is on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton, England, erected by the Imperial Ware Graves Commission with the names of those lost at sea. Members of the Shier family placed a marker in the cemetery at Leaskdale and a plaque in the church to honour him at home.
