Fact 1* | (an unknown value.) |
Birth* | Dr. Michael Roy Shier was born on 20 July 1945. |
He was the son of John Wellington Shier and Mazie LOUISE Binkley. | |
Occupation* | Dr. Michael Roy Shier was an orthopedic surgeon in Michigan in 2009. |
Death* | He died on 14 June 2020 in Port Huron, Michigan, United States, at age 74; Dr. Michael Shier, retired physician and co-founder of Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron, P.C. who saw thousands of patients over the years, has died at 74. His daughter, Kristine Shier Edie, said he died Sunday night due to complications from an illness. She will miss holding her father’s hand, the sheer love he had for his family and said he had an impact on the community in so many ways. “The community has lost a remarkable surgeon and a wonderful friend,” said Dave Devendorf, a golf friend and former attorney for Shier. Steve Heithoff, a fellow orthopedic surgeon and Shier’s business partner for around 30 years, said Shier co-founded Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron, P.C. with Wilmont Kreis and David Ernst in 1983. The three started the practice in a mobile trailer unit in the Port Huron Hospital parking lot, now McLaren Port Huron. Over the next 37 years they grew the business to their current location on River Centre Drive, an over 35,000 square foot building with over 110 employees, he said. “It is a remarkable, remarkable practice that these three guys initiated and built over the years,” Devendorf said. When it came to Shier’s practice, it didn’t matter what the procedure was, once he put his mind to it he could do it and he was a pioneer for arthroscopy in its early years, Heithoff said. He touched “thousands” of patients’ lives over the year. Shier Edie recalled one patient, a girl who was usually shy, who made her father a Froot Loops necklace. He made sure to wear it every time she had an appointment, Shier Edie said. Even after he retired, Shier would still visit the office once in a while donning a ball cap and work boots, Heithoff said. “Because that was Mike Shier, he didn’t really hold any airs,” he said. Shier was one of those people you almost envied or resented because they were just so great at everything they did, Heithoff said. “He was good at so many different things,” Devendorf said, calling him a “serial hobbyist.” His hobbies included photography, woodworking and sharp shooting. He played golf and hockey for decades and earned a private pilot certificate. He was intensely focused and extremely accomplished, Heithoff said. He also had an incredible use of the English language which he could use effectively for humor that would endure anyone to him, Devendorf said. Alex Shier, Michael Shier's grandson, said his grandfather would also play guitar for him and in the past year he had started writing poetry. The two would meet up about once a week and his grandfather would bring these huge stacks of poetry he would read for hours. “He was a remarkable guy,” Alex Shier said, and he plans to turn the poetry into a musical album. “He’s inspired me further than I can see,” he said. Shier Edie said her father had three children, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was adamant he didn’t want a funeral, but she had told him that so many people wanted to appreciate his life. So they are going to take his hobbies, the fruits of his labors, and have an art show instead. Shier Edie will take photos he took, blow them up, frame them and hang them on walls. They will put out examples of his woodworking and even some artwork he made in grade school. Alex Shier and other family members will take some of the poems and put them to music, she said. The celebration will be open to family and certain co-workers. Shier Edie was still working on a date, but was considering July 20, her father’s birthday. From Pollock-Randall FUneral Homes: After tempting fate too many times, Michael Roy Shier, Sr finally exhausted his nine plus lives on June 14, 2020. Falling out a high tree while trying to escape his childhood home, meeting the underside of a semi while driving in a storm, falling off a ladder fixing the satellite dish, developing an aneurysm the size of a potato, being under a shattered plate glass window with large shards of glass precariously hanging over his head and many other concussions and broken bones could not take this pillar of the community down. His family expected him go out in a blaze of glory. They were a little disappointed. Born in Los Angeles to the amazing John and M. Louise Shier on July 20, 1945, as the first of six children, Michael began to make his mark on the world. There has been speculation that he was the favorite child, but he vehemently denied this, claiming that one or the other offspring got all the special attention. In fact, all the siblings have been debating this topic for decades. With his devilish smile and quick wit, he was a force that had to be focused. Little League, football, hockey, barrel jumping in Palmer Park were all ways to have an active outlet and keep Michael out of trouble. But, trouble he sought. Nights at The Dome and skipped school days in the pool halls, where he won enough money to buy his high school sweetheart and soon to be wife, Jill Erickson, a large ruby ring, were the norm. With the extra time in detention, he got to know the nuns at St Stephens High School quite well. One took interest/pity on Michael and the potential that was being wasted and called in a favor from a priest in Dayton, Ohio. This was the springboard to his 25 years in academia, that included Michigan State, Western Michigan and Wayne State University. Many degrees, certificates, published papers and accolades later, Dr. Shier starting practicing orthopedics in Port Huron, Michigan, much to the happiness of his paternal grandmother, who exclaimed that it was about time Michael got a real job at the age of 33. Medicine was Michael’s true calling. He listened. He was a problem solver. He was innovative. He was a procrastinator. Urban legend has it that most of our local doctors have scribes during exams because Shier never did his dictation. Co-workers and family would take boxes of charts to encourage, even cajole, Doc to complete them before his hospital privileges were suspended. What he lacked in paperwork efficiency, he made up for tenfold with bedside manner, a firm handshake, a good joke and true caring. Interests (or in some cases, obsessions) outside of his medical practice were another way for Michael to quench his thirst for knowledge. Proficiency wasn’t good enough. He pushed himself to be an expert. These areas included golf, woodworking, guitar playing, poetry writing, aviation, photography and more. He shared these passions by teaching others and making friends, wherever he went. Michael was fun, smart (some have said genius), generous and loved his family deeply. He is leaving behind three children: daughter, Kristine; sons, Michael and Andrew; son-in-law, Robert; mother of his children, Jill; grandchildren: Kaitlin, Chelsea, Alex, Claudia, Adam, Elise, Grayson and Eli; 6 great grandchildren; Siblings: Nancy, Dianne, Susan, Patricia and John; and many co-workers and friends. Michael was greatly affected by the loss of his parents and specials friends Steve Varga, Bill Kreis and Ron Brickey and his dog, Abby. We are celebrating the Art and Life of Michael Roy Shier on Tuesday, August 25th, 4-6 pm at the Seaway Terminal in Port Huron. Please bring a mask. You, Michael, were taken a little precipitously from us. |

Fact 1 | Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables, was a family friend and dedicated her book, Rainbow Valley, to Morley Roy Shier as well as two other local soldiers who lost their lives in WW I. |
Fact 1 | On October 3, 1911, Montgomery as Mrs. Ewan MacDonald was introduced as the minister’s new wife and honoured with a reception dinner at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Three of the families she met that evening – The Shiers, the Brookses and the Lapps – would never have expected to be mentioned in her books. Catherine* and James Shier’s farm was located a few acres away from the Leaskdale Church. They had three children in 1911: Mabel was nineteen; Morley, sixteen, was a student at Uxbridge High School; and Harvey was nine. The sons [of the three families] would have known the MacDonald’s for only a few years, but their families and relations became friends especially the younger siblings because they grew up during the fourteen years that Montgomery created and directed the Young People’s Association. Morley Roy Shier knew “Mrs. Mac” for about two years before he left to attend the University of Toronto’s teacher-preparation program. Bob Brooks was in Ewan’s congregation for about 6 years before he enlisted. Gordie Lapp was at home foe only a year before leaving to work and study pharmacy. They joined three different military units at different times between 1915 and 1917. These three young men represent the sacrifices that small communities all over Canada invested in the world conflict. Montgomery planned, wrote and revised Rainbow Valley during the final years of the war, from 1917 to 1918. Montgomery penned the dedication to the pilot Morley Shier and the two soldiers Bob Brookes and Gordie Lapp, when she finished the Rainbow Valley manuscript in late December 1918, three months after the death of the last casualty, Flight Lieutenant Shier. Several Shier family members were Montgomery’s friends, including Morley’s cousin, Mary Shier McLeod. Readers of Montgomery’s journals will recall Morley’s uncle, Dr. Walter Columbus Shier, who was a physician in Leaskdale and Uxbridge. Dr. Shier attended the MacDonald family and was the first doctor to treat Ewan’s depression. Another uncle was Rob Shier** who lived in Zephyr; his third wife was Lillis Harrison (Lily Reid), Montgomery’s household helper from 1912 to 1915 and a trusted friend throughout Montgomery’s life. Morley was a teacher first at Corson’s Siding, northeast of Leaskdale and then at Earl Grey School in Toronto. Shortly after Montgomery began work on Rainbow Valley, Morley stared pilot training. He went to England in May 1918, after basic flight training, to learn combat and reconnaissance skills at the British advanced flying schools. He was assigned to the 256th Royal Air force Squadron formed in June 1918 at Seahouses, Northumberland. The squadron did coastal surveillance for German submarines and flew two-seater Canadian built de Havilland DH-6 planes, with a range of about four hours of flight. One of the many nicknames for the DH-6 was “the Flying Coffin”. Shier became an active RFC pilot in June 1918 at the age of twenty-three. About one-quarter of the RFC squadron crews were Canadian. Most RFC combat pilots survived an average of about three weeks once they began their combat flights. Although reconnaissance pilots were not exposed to enemy fire as often as combat pilots, the risk to them was still significant; they were not armed but could carry bombs, and parachutes were not allowed because they were too heavy. After two months of flying, Flight Lieutenant Shier and his plane went down in the fog in the North Sea on Sept 6, 1918 about twenty miles from shore. Montgomery did not hear of Morley’s death until a month later, three days before Germany and Austria agreed to peace in October 1918.Shier’s name is on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton, England, erected by the Imperial Ware Graves Commission with the names of those lost at sea. Members of the Shier family placed a marker in the cemetery at Leaskdale and a plaque in the church to honour him at home. *a daughter of Jacob Shier and Catherine Rynard. **Robert Timothy Shier The preceding are excerpts from” L.M. Montgomery’s Rainbow Valleys, The Ontario Years, Chapter 2, To The Memory of Leaskdale and the Loss in the Great War, by Mary Beth Cavert. |
Fact 1 | On July, 25, 2017, the Royal Canadian Air Force featured Morley Roy Shier in their Profile of Courage series By Major Bill March Born in Scott Township, near Leaskdale, Ontario, on December 4, 1894, Morley Roy Shier attended school in Leaskdale and Uxbridge before embarking on a career as a teacher. He had accepted a position at the Earl Grey School in Toronto when he made the decision to enlist, and on November 15, 1917, he joined the Royal Flying Corps. After completing his training at various Royal Flying Corps (Canada) establishments in Canada and the United States, Second Lieutenant Shier was commissioned as a pilot in the newly formed Royal Air Force (RAF) in April 1918. A month later, he was in England, where he would spend the next few months completing his advanced training. In July, he was posted to No. 256 Squadron and stationed at the village of Seahouses on the Northumberland coast in northeast of England. The squadron operated two-seater Airco DeHavilland 6 (DH6) aircraft in coastal and anti-submarine patrol roles. Underpowered, the DH6 could not accommodate both bombs and an observer, so patrols were often flown solo by the pilot, thus permitting a small weapons load to be carried. On September 6, 1918, a relatively foggy day, Flight Lieutenant Shier took off in DH6 C5172 on a North Sea patrol. For reasons unknown, the aircraft ditched in the sea about 32 kilometres (20 miles) offshore. His body was never located and he was presumed to have drowned. News of his death did not become general knowledge back home until October. Family friend and writer, Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables, noted in her diary that “On Tuesday came word of the death of Morley Shier, a fine young fellow from our church… .” In January 1919, she dedicated her latest novel, Rainbow Valley, to the three members of her community who were killed in the war. The inscription reads, “To the memory of Goldwin Lapp, Robert Brookes and Morley Shier, who made the supreme sacrifice that the happy valleys of their home might be kept sacred from the ravage of the invader.” Because his body was never recovered, Flight Lieutenant Shier is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial in Hampshire, England. He was 23. |
