He was the son of William Henry Shier and Louise Marie Neiman
(Witness) CensusReinhardt Carlton Shier appeared on the census of 1940 in the household of William Henry Shier in St. Clair Shores, Macomb County, Michigan, United States
Death*Reinhardt Carlton Shier died on 1 November 2019 in Michigan, United States, at age 82; Reinhardt Carlton Shier, of Farmington, MI, passed away November 1, 2019, at the age of 82.

Reinhardt loved to travel-to Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, and all over Michigan, especially to the Shier Cottage in Bay View. Arizona was also a favorite destination where he and his wife, Carol Shier (Nee Bunso), would snowbird for the past eight winters. He also dearly loved to go camping across the U.S. with their tent, pop-up, trailer, truck camper, fifth wheel, Class C Motorhome, or Class A Motorhome. Reinhardt also had a passionate interest in trains-both life-size and model sets-and he appreciated classic cars as well. Reinhardt was an avid photographer and it was extremely rare to see him without one of his many cameras. It was during a camera club meeting back in 1970 in St. Clair Shores that Reinhardt met Carol, his wife of forty-eight years. Most of all though, Reinhardt loved spending time with his loving family and friends, and especially his grandkids. He was deeply loved by his family and will be dearly missed.

Reinhardt was the dear husband of Carol (née Bunso), loving father of Robyn (the late John) Koralewski, Lori (Cathy) Ballew, Kristopher Shier, Stephanie (Bill) Clifford, and Scott Shier. Dear grandfather of David (Michelle) Ballew, Jennifer (Mark) Slee, Katelyn (Steve) McQuillan, Megan Clifford, Samantha Clifford, and Anna Clifford. Dear great-grandfather of Ava Rae Ballew, Emerson Ballew, Harper Ballew, Hadley Ballew, and Tyler Slee. Also survived by his many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, William H. Shier Sr., and his mother, Louise Marie Shier (née Niemann), and his siblings: Caroline, William Jr., and Donald.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Michigan Humane Society, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or donor’s choice.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, November 5, from 2 - 8 p.m. (Sharing of Memories at 7:00 p.m.), at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. 11 Mile Rd., Royal Oak, MI (4 blocks east of Woodward). Funeral service will be Wednesday, November 6, 10:00 a.m., at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak.

Death*He died on 6 September 1877 in Brock Twp., Ontario County, Ontario, Canada, at age 81; Richard Shier passed away in the triumph of death on September 6, 1877 at his own residence near Vroomanton, in the Township of Brock, on the Sunderland Circuit, in the eighty-second year of his age. Bro. Shier was born in the County of Limerick, Ireland and was converted to God under the ministerial labors of the never to be forgotten Rev. Arthur Nobles, of whom he ever spoke as his father in the Gospel. He was married to his now aged and bereaved widow in the year 1821, and came to Canada in the year 1822, remaining for a short time in Lower Canada, where he and his wife at once united with the Wesleyan Methodist Church on what is now the Odelltown Circuit, and so exemplary was his life, and deep his piety, that he was soon appointed class-leader in that place. The Rev. W. D. Brown, in writing the obituary notice of Bro. A. D. Douglass, at that early date a member of Bro. Shier’s class, speaks of him as an ardent and devoted Christian. He shortly afterward moved up the country into Canada West to the township where he died, which was then a comparative wilderness, and here as well as in Lower Canada, he at once joined the Church of his choice. Churches were then few, as were also homes of the weary itinerant could find shelter and rest. Bro. Shier’s humble dwelling was always gladly thrown open when needed for religious services, and was always looked upon as a home for ministers, where they partook of the kind hospitalities of himself and his wife. He was called upon to fill the office of Recording Steward of the circuit, which office he filled for a number of years with great credit to himself, satisfactorily to the brethren who placed him in the honoured position, and also with great comfort to the minister in charge, for he was not only a liberal supporter of the servants of God and of the other friends of our Church, but faithfully and unflinchingly reminded others of their duty in this direction. The membership of the church is which he worshipped selected him as their class-leader, which he held until God called him to a place in the Church triumphant, notwithstanding that during his last few years of his life he was not very able to attend, owing to the feeble state of his health, but never happier than when hearing of the spiritual welfare of the flock. We had the opportunity of visiting this dear brother several times during the last few months of his life, and always found him in possession of a settled faith in Christ, and strong in that strength which God supplies through his eternal Son. He leaves behind him a numerous and wealthy family of children and grandchildren. While many of them are followers of the same Master, all, we believe, are warm friends and liberal supporters of the Church of their father: but may they all meet him in heaven.
The funeral service was preached in his own house Sunday following his death after which his remains were followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends to the Methodist burying ground, where they were interred, waiting the morning of the resurrection.
Further notes:
In 1822 Richard Shier, his wife, Catherine and brother-in-law, Samuel came to Lower Canada and settled in the area of Odelltown. As the Odelltown Methodist Church was built in 1823 and with Richard Shier being a member of that congregation, in all likelihood Richard and Samuel had a part in building that historic church.
Richard and Catherine’s oldest son, Wesley was buried in 1823 in
Douglass Cemetery, not far from Odelltown and just west of Napierville, Quebec.
Burial*He was buried in St John Cemetery, Brock Twp, Sunderland, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada; Headstone states:

We miss thee in the circle around the fireside
We miss thee in devotion at peaceful eventide
In memory of thy nature so full of truth and love

Fact 1*This is a photo of Richard John Wesley Shier and his wife Sarah Ann McLaughlin taken on the steps of the side door to their rural farm home south of Semans Sask circa 1925.

This is likely the replacement house as the first house just nicely got built when the roof caught fire mid winter and it burned to the ground. They think it was sparks from the chimney of the  wood fire that ignited the roof and they had no way of fighting it.

They were forced to move in to an empty  granary where they spent the rest of the cold Sask winter. In spring they went to Semans with horses and wagon and brought back the first of many loads of  lumber and began to build the  new house. As of 2015 the house is is still standing---the roof leaks badly as the shingles are almost all missing.

They settled on part of lot 5 on the 6th concession of Brock , where a large family of children were raised, viz: Richard J. of Toronto; George D. of Uxbridge; Julius H. of Vroomanton; Mrs. Robt. Murray of Zephyr; Mrs. R.C.Hoskin of Toronto; Mrs. W.C. Francis, Cannington and one son deceased. In 1913 the parents moved to Sunderland, retiring from active life and from the farm where they had long and faithfully toiled. and raised a family which long since had grown up and "called them blessed". Only one brother, George, survives, and to him is given the credit of carrying much of the early history to Brock in his well trained memory. Be it said of Loftice Shier, he was a good father, and a lonely home is left. It must be so, these tender human ties cannot be severed without a pang. Yet in such a death there is really no cause for grief. His life's work was done, and well done. Wearied with life's cares, weary of suffering, he lay down to rest. The funeral was largely attended and was conducted by Rev. H.E. Wellwood of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. W.G. Aldridge. Internment took place at St.John Cemetery.2
Burial*He was buried in St John's Cemetery, Brock Twp, Sunderland, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada.

He was the son of Morley Howard Shier and Helen JOYCE Mowat
Occupation*Richard Mowat Shier was employed as a Research Engineer for B.C. Hydro and retired in 1989.
Death*He died on 26 January 2021 in Lions Gate Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, at age 90; Rich Shier passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital, after a lengthy decline due to dementia. He had lived a full life that included an intellectually stimulating career, a loving family, cultural interests, outdoor pursuits, and travel.
is predeceased by his parents, Morley and Joyce Shier, and by his sister, Stephanie Outtrim, and brother, Philip. He is remembered fondly by his survivors: Lenora, his wife of 66 years; children Jenny Wallace (David), Robin (Carol), and Daniel (Helen Stappers); as well as grandchildren Lindsay, Saskia, Emily, Malcolm, Hannah, and Ben.
was born in Vancouver, grew up in Point Grey, and graduated from Lord Byng Secondary School. He attended UBC, receiving both a Bachelor degree in Engineering Physics (1952), and a Master of Science degree in Physics and Metallurgy (1953). He then won a two year Athlone Fellowship, which enabled him to study in Rugby, England. In the middle of his fellowship, he was granted permission to return to Vancouver to marry his sweetheart, Lenora (née Shobrook), in July, 1954, and together they returned to England. In 1955, Rich continued his advanced studies at Imperial College, London, and when completed, he and Lenora embarked on a six month adventure on a BSA Bantam motorbike through Europe, visiting Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and Yugoslavia. They then returned home to Vancouver, and Rich began working in Research and Development for IPEC and then became the head of the newly formed research group at BC Hydro. Rich was highly respected in his field; he attended and presented at many international conferences, and he mentored many of his junior colleagues. In 1961, he and Lenora had a "Lewis House" built for them on Madrona Crescent, near Horseshoe Bay, where they raised their three children as far away as one could be from the city, with mountains and ocean nearby and clean air to breathe, amid the smells of the trees and woods. Until 1964, their only car was a 1926 Dodge Touring car, which Rich had had since his university days.
retired from BC Hydro in 1988 and soon became involved in the Peace Movement, in particular with Project Ploughshares, and he was among those who contributed to making Vancouver a nuclear free zone. He also joined the West Vancouver Seniors' Hiking Club, and over the next fifteen years he climbed many mountains within a day's reach of Vancouver. He delivered Meals on Wheels, and he canvassed for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Kidney Foundation. Rich and Lenora travelled often, visiting Scotland, England, Turkey, Japan, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Haida Gwaii, the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and Newfoundland. He loved chamber music and amateur theatre, had weakness for chocolate, and a legendary taste for maple syrup.
Rich, family was the most important component of his life. He planned interesting summer camping trips every year, and the family explored southern BC, travelling primarily on back roads, and visiting remote areas. He was a kind and generous man with a quiet sense of humour. He was a loving father who patiently helped with homework, enjoyed philosophical discussions, encouraged his children's interests and pursuits, and who caught us as we leaped into his arms when he walked in the door after a day at work. He loved his grandchildren, each of whom felt special because of his patience, his warmth, his interest, and his unassuming support. He was a good man.
family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of 4 East and 5 East at Lions Gate Hospital for their kindness and care.
lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the charities that Rich supported: Project Ploughshares, and Save the Children.
