William W. Shier,a graduate of the law department of the U. of M., Class of '94, was drowned in Detroit River Sunday afternoon by the capsizing of a rowboat off Sugar Island. Two others were drowned at the same time. All might have been saved had it not been for the cowardice of a yachtsman who refused to go to their aid as he was afraid they might swamp him. Mr. Shier was 24 years of age, and was a bright, promissing young attorney. He had been for two sessions of the legislature a committee clerk, and after the adjournment of the late legislature had formed a law partnership with W. L. Wilma was the loving mother of Patricia (Adrian Cheong), Jane (Robert MacLeod) and Anne (Eric Goddard); Grandma of Jonathon Fripp (Amber), and Marlie, Jay and Tamara Goddard; great-grandmother of Sierra and Indya Fripp. She is survived by her brother, Stan Shier (Betty) and her sister, Bernice Moir. After graduating from Toronto Western Hospital School for Nurses in 1942, Wilma was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant (Nursing Sister) in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. She was posted overseas in 1945, serving first in England and later in Germany, where she met David. They married in 1947 and over the next 30 years David's military career took them to points throughout Canada, to the southern US and to Oslo, Norway. In each new location Wilma made a beautiful home for her family and expertly filled the role of Army wife, deftly entertaining their colleagues and friends and mentoring other military wives. In retirement David and Wilma settled in Kingston, ON and in 1998 Wilma relocated to a retirement residence in Ottawa. At Wilma's request there will be no memorial service. Her cremated remains will be interred with David's in Cataraqui Cemetery, Kingston.12. |

Proud of his role as a grandparent, he leaves behind many grandchildren - Connor, Domanic, Alexus, Isabella, Joshua, Taylyn, Mason, Alex and Ben. He will be sadly missed by his brothers and sisters, his dear friends Elaine and Sharon, friends and family. He was a devoted employee of St. Vincent de Paul Hospital for 30 years and spent his final days in the comfort of the familiar, compassionate hospital now known as the Brockville General Hospital, Garden Street, Site. Also many thanks to the exceptional medical professionals who cared for Dad at BGH (both sites), Kingston General Hospital and St. Lawrence Lodge. Family and friends may call at the Barclay Funeral Home, 137 Pearl Street, East on Wednesday, July 8th. 2009 from 2-4 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel at 4 p.m. Interment will take place at Halladay Burial Place, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, in memoriams to the ALS Society would be gratefully acknowledged by the family. |
