'Born July 6, 1922 to Margaret Mabel Shier and Hugh Magnus Empey in Hunta, Ontario. She grew up on the farm until she married Wilbert Ross Egeberg in 1940. They lived in Bert Siding near Cochrane, ON until 1945 when they built their current homestead in then Port Arthur, ON. Eileen worked at the Airlane Hotel and the Thunder Bay Country Club for many years in the field of hospitality and catering. Both she and Wilbert were also avid bowlers. Eileen's many talents included gardening, preparing beautiful wedding and birthday cakes for many family members, as well as artworks of needlepoint, cross-stitch and embroidery which adorn the family's walls. In her own home, she enjoyed the company of her granddaughter, Shauna, and her budgie birds -'80â and -'82â. Puzzles were a recent interest, as was socializing with the Adult Day Program members at the 55+ Centre. 'Together, Eileen and Wilbert raised 4 children: Ross, Arthur, Cecil (Wendy) and Violet (Peter) Moore. Eileen was always ready to offer a cup of coffee or tea and was happy to host numerous social gatherings at a moment's notice. 'Eileen was predeceased by he parents Mabel and Hugh Empey, husband Wilbert, son Art, sister Della Montgomery, and brother Francis Empey. Eileen's smile, enduring wit, and her talents in making her infamous traditional Norwegian Christmas bread will be sadly missed by all whose lives she has touched. 'As per Eileen's wishes, Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, with Rev. December 11, 1920 in Braham, Minnesota, Hazel Matilda Engstrom was one of four children born to Olaf and Hilda Engstrom. She met her husband Leslie Venables while a student at the University of Minnesota, where she graduated with a BA in Nursing in 1942. Hazel and Les married on February 19, 1943 in Minneapolis.
1947, Hazel and Les gave birth to a disabled child, the first of four daughters. That challenge prompted a move to Washington in their quest to find adequate treatment, education, and community acceptance for disabled children and adults. They dedicated their time and energy to making a difference in the lives of countless disabled children and their families throughout Washington. Hazel advocated in the early 1960's for education programs for the disabled in neighborhood public schools in Snohomish County. She was instrumental in starting a number of programs for disabled and adults in the county, including the Little Green, White and Red Schoolhouses, Sherwood Learning Center, and Quilceda Community Services. Information about those programs can be seen at http://www.quilcedacommunityservices.org.

Over her lifetime, she volunteered thousands of hours as a recognized leader for the disabled community, and as a member of PEO, Soroptomists and the Silvana Cinderellas. In addition, Hazel worked as a public health nurse, taught coursework at Everett Community College, and she and Les raised their daughters. Together, they built by hand their home in Stanwood and a family cabin on Guemes Island. Hazel was an avid gardener, bird watcher, and seamstress and remained a capable, active, and fiercely independent person up until the time of her death. There was never any challenge too big or too difficult for her to take on. She was a woman of diverse talents and activities and did not shy away from life's difficulties. Her absence will be felt deeply by family and friends alike.
