Gudrun was a member of Elstow 4-H Poultry Club and in 1954 she represented Saskatchewan at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair, winning first place at Nationals. In 1957 she married Herb Shier and designed their home and beautiful farm yard with an orchard, flowers and vegetable garden. Gudrun considered her best years were when she was raising her family. She was a dedicated and patient mother and homemaker. Gudrun loved gardening, birdwatching, travelling, being with children, dancing, curling, playing the piano, bowling and learning. She had a strong social conscience, volunteering and donating to many causes. With her artistic flair, she created elaborate costumes, flower arrangements and wedding cakes. Gudrun and Herb went dancing regularly, including 40 years of square dancing in Saskatoon. Family car trips included California, Illinois, and BC. After her children grew up, she continued to travel, including visiting relatives in Sweden. Gudrun had a strong faith. She was called to ministry and convocated from St. Andrew's College in 1993. As a United Church Minister, she served in the Aylsham and Viscount pastoral charges. In lieu of flowers, Gudrun suggested donations to McClure United Church. "Jerry" Friedland, 95, of Marinette passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 4, 2020 in the company of family members. He was born March 9, 1925 to Eric and Pearl Friedland in Mountain, Wisconsin where he graduated from high school. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. On November 8, 1947, he was united in marriage to Luella M. Larsen in Mountain and shared 70 years of life together until her death on June 8, 2018. They came to Marinette in 1951 and resided in the same home since that time. Jerry worked for 18 years for Northland Lutheran where he was a maintenance supervisor for Luther Home. In retirement he loved gardening work with Luella and enjoyed his yard and bird watching. Jerry had a lifelong love of music and for many years had his own Country and Western band, The Harmony Notes. He is survived by five children, Marilyn (Dale) Olsen of Menominee, Jerome Friedland of Green Bay, Jeff (Denise) Friedland of Marinette, Joey Friedland of Menominee and Melody (Joe) Hargis of Sturgeon Bay, Wis; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosalie Settersten of Marinette; a sister-in-law, Lucille Schuettpelz; two brothers-in-law, Lloyd "Bud" Larsen and Leon (Jean) Larsen; and longtime family friend and fellow musician, Linda Sieman. In addition to his parents and loving wife of 70 years, Luella; he was preceded in death by two sisters, Vallarie Krzych and Marilyn Kramer. Germain will be laid to rest alongside his wife at Forest Home Mausoleum with Military Honors for immediate family members only. Due to the current public health crisis, a celebration of life will be held at a later date yet to be determined. A special thank you is extended to Heartland Hospice for the special care given Germain in his last days, especially for the kindness of Bryan and Sabina Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home is assisting the family. |
