Death* | Florence Johnston died on 11 July 1928 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada; The Late Mrs. (Rev.) J. W. Shier Florence Johnston, daughter of the later James Johnston and his wife Patience Clapp, was born on the 6th day of August, 1868. She was educated in Cannington school, where she proved a capable student. She was fond of music and in her earlier years was a great help in the choir of the Methodist Chruch. Miss Johnstonbecame the wife of the Rev. J. W. Shier on New Years day, 1896, being the first bride of the new Methodist Church, Cannington. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Barry Greatrix, who is now retired, and who would have been present at the funeral if his health had premitted. For thirty-two and a half years Mrs. Shier was the famithful loving wife of a minister, sympathizing with and assisting him in the many and varied responsibilities of his public life. She was very affable, and in her contact with all classes of men and women her life had a wonderful influence for good. Her home was always inviting, she was an efficient housekeeper, and she had the faculty of making a small income meet the requirements of the household with a great plenteousness. In the church her work was principally in the Sunday School, where she was a teacher continuously. The in the Missions Band and Women's Missionary Societies, she had a great influence. She was very fond of children and very successful in training them. During the 32 years she and her busband laboured in the Bay of Quinte, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Montreal Conferences and everywhere on her charge, she formed friendships that have grown in endearment as the years move by. Rev. Mr. Shier had with him in his work a dozen young men as candidates for the ministry, the parsonage their home for counsel and direction, and the touch of Mrs. Shier's life upon these young me was powerful for good. Some of them are in China and Japan in the Missionary work, some of them in active work in Canada, and some of them preceeded her to the better land. Mrs. Shier's sympathies were always drawn out to the aged and sick and distressed in each field of labour. She as never of rugged health, but was extremely courageous and ambitious, and in spite of many hardships lived a very strenuous and active life for 60 years. For a number of years her constitution was bearing a heavy physical strain but she never ceased her work for her Saviour, whom she so dearly loved and gladly served. The word of God was her chief meditation and her Bible readings given in the W.M.S. were greatly appreciated. Her health gradually failed and on July 11, 1928, while on a motor trip to Quebec City in company with Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Johnston, at the close of a very enjoyable day in her ususal health while preparing the the night's rest, she suddenly expired. The body was brought to her old home town, Cannington. She and her husband were planning to be resent at the Jubilee Celebration, but their return to their old home was a little in advance of the date. The funeral services were heild at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Johnston, on Monday, July 16. Rev. Nicholson of the United Church taking charge, assisted by Rev. Scott of the Presbyterian Church. Rev. C. Watch , of Toronto, who knew the deceased while he was in charge of the Cannington circuit, came for the funeral and spoke very conforting words as he recalled the associations of 38 years ago, when the Rev. Shier was received by him as a candidate for the ministry. A very large concourse of friends and relatives were present at the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Shier had just completed their first year on the Windsor, Quebec charge, but deceased found her way into the hearts of people, as evidenced by the beautiful flowers sent by each of the organizations of Windson CHurch and by the Chalmers United Church, Quebec City: also by the immediate friends. Dr. D. A. Mathieson, of Quebec City, said prayers before the body was taken to the train. The Pall-bearers were, - Messers. W. Hodgen, Dr. Henderson, Dr. Dowsley of Beaverton, Curtis Shipman, N. McLeod and Richard Brown. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were: Mrs. J. London and Mrs. William Owens, cousins of the departed one, from Toronto, Miss B. M. Shier, deaconess from Montreal. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved husband and the many relatives. From the Cannington Gleaner, July 19, 1928 provided by Laurie Wheeler. |
