Fact 1* | From Findagrave Mem# 152646363 This is the story of William Davies the third child of John Davies and Margaret Ann Page. William was born in Penallt, Monmouthshire, Wales on February 10, 1824 and christened 16 March 1824. In 1841 William and his older brother Richard were farm laborers in the Penallt census. Being that there were not many opportunities at the age of 20 he emigrated to New York. In the future he made two trips to wales to bring his future wife, his brother and his father to Canada. In the spring of 1845 he moved from Sycacuse, New York to Little York now known as Toronto, Canada. Then he went to Hamilton and London where he worked for Carling Bros. This is when the city was called "the forks". That same year he went to St. Johns, near London, Canada where he remained four years working for David T. Decker cleaning wild berries. On setember 21, 1848 at St. Johns he was married to Ann Watkins lewis by rev. James Evans. Who was sent as a missionary to the indians shortly after. James Evans was a circuit riding minister and so they had to wait two to three weeks for him to arrive. William and Ann obtained 50 acres from the crown in 1851. They settled on a farm on 3rd con. of West Nissouri, Ontario. Where on his way to church he waded the river in his bare feet, carrying his wife on his back, she carrying his boots. After sometime he got a canoe and used to take the people back and forth to church. After 13 years of pioneer life in Nissouri, They moved to Blanshard tp. 8th con. lot 22. In 1867 they bought for thousand dollars lot 22w from Ann James wife of Willam James. In 1879 Perth county Ontario published a gazette, William is listed and map of Blanshard with his lot and history of Blanshard. His family attended union service in the old brown school house. When the union took place between the new connections and Wesleyans the McIntyre Church was built on the Davis farm beside the graveyard which had been there. For a number of years, William was a constant supporter of the church and held a number of offices in it such as classleader, trustee and others. A few years later he bought W 1/2 22 from Josiah Lan for 62050. In 1870 we have the tax record of his land. Also in 1870 census, William and his whole family are listed plus John Richard Watkins his future son-in-law. In 1872 William and Ann took a mortage two-hundred and twenty-nice dollars from John Davis. William's wife ann died November 11, 1880 at Blanshard leaving four girls and four boys. William Sr. was married a second time to Charlotte Shier of Blanshard in the years of 1885. Charlotte was born in 1822. In 1891 census we see william and Charlotte still on the homestead also listed are Frank and Mary McIntyre his daughter and her husband. In 1900 William and Charlotte came to Granton, Ontario, Canada to reside with his brother Richard who died shortly after. William lived in Granton until he died June 28, 1910 Biddulph twp, Middlesex, Ontario. For three years before his death, William was an invalid and showed great patience and wonderful sweetiness of character. He was a temperance worker belonging to Granton Division Sons of Temperance. He was liberal in politics. The funeral took place June 30th at McIntyre Cemetery. Services conducted by Rev. G F . Wells. Charlotte Shier Davis died May 1913 and is also buried at McIntyre. William and Charlott had no children. Grand children said of William Davis he was real nice except no one could make noise on Sundays it was strictly for bible reading. |
