Clara started her one and only job with the Toronto Star in 1929 and worked there until her retirement at age 65. A funeral service will be held at the Trull "North Toronto Chapel" Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 2704 Yonge Street, (5 blocks south of Lawrence Ave.) Toronto, on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time. Interment will take place following at Cedarvale Cemetery, Cannington, Ontario. In memory of Clara, donations to the Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund would be appreciated. |

He was welcomed into the arms of his parents, Clifford and Phyllis Shier, on June 24, 1936 and spent his early years in Colonsay, Saskatchewan. He moved with his parents to Saskatoon where he attended Caswell Public School and Bedford Road Collegiate. It was here he met the love of his life, Gloria Sweet, whom he later married while attending the University of Saskatchewan where he graduated with a Degree in Agriculture. He began his career in Ottawa, Ontario and later, with his young family, moved to Sherwood Park, Alberta in 1968. At that time, Clare accepted a position at the University of Alberta where he remained until his retirement in 1991. Clare was a passionate gardener, skilled financial investor, a lover of Springer Spaniel dogs, and as well, he enjoyed many summers at his family cabin in the Okanagan. His sense of humour, quick wit, love of laughter, and youthful zest for life will always be remembered. Clare is predeceased in death by his loving wife, Gloria, and his parents, Clifford and Phyllis. He is survived by his caring children, Cheryl (Bruce), Randy, and Cathy; grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was especially proud of his five grandchildren, Rebecca, April (Brett), Scott (Megan), Jillian (Sean), and Christie (Stephen); and his two great grandchildren, Kate and Molly. It is with deep regret that he is no longer able to be a part of their accomplishments and successes in the future. In accordance with Clare’s wishes, a private family service has been planned to celebrate his life. His friends are encouraged to celebrate Clare in a way that is meaningful to them. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA in Clare’s memory if you so choose. He will be sadly missed and forever treasured. |

He attended school in Crandall, not quite finishing Grade 11. He was a born farmer and worked hard there from an early age - stating that he had driven a "stook" team during threshing at the age of 11, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:OO p.m. marrying he took over the mixed farm from his father, specializing in dairy cattle for about 10 years until 1973 and continued with beef cattle until 1982, then just grain farmed until 1992 when he rented the land, eventually selling the farm in the mid 2000. He loved dogs, his favourite being his last a blue heeler named Oscar. He spent one winter, 1950-1951 at Wawa, ON at the mine. Gerald was a very community-minded person - he helped buils two rinks and worked at times upgrading the Community Hall. He served on the Crandall School and Pool Elevator Boards in the 60's, and then was a member of the Birdtail School Division for nine years until 1980. During that time he was also the secretary of the Manco Creamery and Cheese Plant at Rossburn 1970-1974 and he was in the Miniota Municipal Council, 1980-2002. When the Upper Assiniboine Conservation District was formed in 1996 he was one of the original board members and was still serving on this board and made many lasting friendships during these years. Gerald enjoyed sports, playing baseball, hockey and curling. He also umpired baseball and refereed hockey. He enjoyed hunting with the guys. and his wife spent many years after 1980 camping and fishing - he was renowned for his filleting and cooking skills. Gerald was predeceased by his sons Vincent and Gordon, brother Barry, father and mother Clarence and Helen Shier, father and mother-in-law Gordon and Lois Vickery, and sister and brother-in-law Sheila and Frank Theide. to mourn are his wife of 60 years Lenora (Lois), daughter Elayna (Michael) Zadko, daughter-in-law Mary Shier and grandchildren Veronica, Whitney and Gordon; also two step grandchildren Tiffany and Michael Zadko and great grandchildren Caydence and Cole; sister Beverley (Philip) Barteaux, sister-in-law Pat Shier, aunts Sally Parker and Irene Parker, several cousins, sister-in-law Evelyn (Richard) Hills, brothers-in-law Gerald (Roberta) Vickery, Doug Vickery and many nieces and nephews. funeral was held at the Hamiota District Sports Complex on Wednesday, May 9. In 1924, Claribel married in Tacoma. The spelling of the name of her husband has been interpreted variously as Linik, Lavik, Link. Little is yet known about him. The marriage certificate (#87162) interprets his name as J. W. Linik Jr. and is dated 11 July 1924. The marriage is not believed to have lasted long, as she is selected in the 1930 Federal Census for Tacoma as living with her mother and family as a single female.
Sometime after 1930, Claribel emigrated to Juneau, Alaska and married Henry Theodore Meserschmidt on May 1, 1933. This 2nd marriage is believed to have been dissolved sometime between 1940 and 1945, as a Claribel Shier is reflected to be living in Tacoma, Washington, in the 1945 Tacoma Directory.
Sometime after 1945 Claribel married Ward Charles Johnson. As the marriage certificate has not yet been discovered, this memorializer does not know the location of the marriage. However, it is known that Claribel and Ward lived for many years in Anchorage, Alaska.
From her Obituary, it was noted that she was employed as a supervisor in the Alaska Department of Health. The couple remained in Alaska until 1968, when they emigrated to Yamhill Co., Oregon.
The couple spent the remainder of their lives in Oregon. Following her death in 1978. She was cremated. Both her and Ward are buried at the Lawn Hyacinth section of Riverside Memorial Park, Spokane, Washington. |

She was loved by many nieces, nephews and cousins, and was a cherished friend. Clela was a dedicated nurse for 40 years with much of that time at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay. She loved her time at the cottage, boat rides (but not too fast!), antiques, fall drives to see the colours, and anything chocolate! She will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held at the JARDINE FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION & TRIBUTE CENTRE, 8 Princes Street, West, Fenelon Falls on Tuesday, March 26 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm with the funeral service in the chapel on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at 1:00 pm. Guests are invited to a reception following the service at Fenelon Falls United Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Ross Memorial Hospital or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
