(Witness) Census | Jemima Switzer appeared on the census of 1871 in the household of Nicholas Shier in Usborne Twp., Huron County, Ontario, Canada. |
Death* | Jemima Switzer died on 18 October 1877 at age 39; Jemima Shier passed away in the triumph of faith on Thursday, October 18th, 1877, at seven o’clock AM. She was the daughter of Edward and Sarah Switzer, of the County of Limerick, Ireland. Sister Shier was born in the Township of Brock, County Ontario, April 1838. She was married to her now sorrowing husband, Mr Nicholas Shier, March, 1855, and moved with him to the Township of Usborne, County Huron, that being her home until the time of her death. When they moved to Usborne, that part of the country being a desolate wilderness, and as they were one of the first settlers, she had many hardships to endure in the lonesome woods. There was not any church near her residence. Though from early childhood she was brought up in the fear and admonition of the Lord, the date of her conversion to God could not be definitely given. In 1862, she became a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Kirkton, (at that time called the St Marys Circuit, Kirkton) where she remained faithful until God called her from the church earthly to the church triumphant. The class and fellowship-meeting being a source of great blessing to her, she always felt thankful that her lot was cast among the Methodists. Wherever she went she would carry a heavenly influence with her for good that made her welcome and a happy guest with all who knew her. Although the last five years of her life she was the subject of a painful, tedious and hopeless disease, often confined to her room for months, shut away from all religious society and church, her genial and happy spirit seemed to grow more divine and Christ-like up to the last. She always loved her pastors, and they who have travelled that circuit will remember with what kindness she would welcome them within her hospitable door, as she was always glad to have them visit her, especially during her illness, and they have heard her express her willingness to depart and be with Christ, away from all pain and sickness, toil and care, and be with the blest singing Hallelujah forever, to her would be a happy change. The writer has known her for upwards of twenty years, and never heard her utter an unkind word against anyone. The erring one always had her sympathy; she would express sorrow for them. As a daughter she was dutiful, as a sister she was kind and gentle, as a loving wife and mother it would be difficult to find her equal. She was ready to give counsel and advice at any time. She had a deep interest in both the temporal and spiritual welfare of her husband and children, whom she dearly loved. Her humble prayer was if they formed a broken family here below, they would form an unbroken one in the beautiful home beyond the skies, there to meet to part no more, and engage with her in singing praises unto the Lord forever. May they all meet in that happy land. The end was sudden and rather unexpected to her friends and neighbors, but not to her, for she was ready to give up the cross, and wear the crown which was prepared for her. She leaves a husband and family of nine children, with many other near relations, to mourn their loss. The most of them (if not all) are followers of the meek and lowly Jesus, and trust that when they have finished their earthly and religious career they will form such a happy band that they will make the heavenly arches ring. A large number followed her remains to the burying ground, Kirkton, where they were interred awaiting the morning of the resurrection. The funeral sermon was preached the Sabbath following her death to a large congregation of weeping people, by Rev Mr Gane. He chose his text from 1st Samuel, xx chapter, 18th verse, last clause: “Thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty. “. |
Burial* | She was buried in Usborne Twp.,Kirkton Union Cemetery, Kirkton, Huron County, Ontario, Canada. |
