The family of Neil and Jean McNiven (nee Robertson) would like our friends and family to know that Neil has passed away in his 91st year, peacefully at home.
Neil spent his entire life on the original family farm (circa 1831) near Coulson in Oro-Medonte Township. Neil was the son of Everett and Evelyn McNiven (nee Beaton).
Neil’s lifelong farming career saw the transition from horses to tractors, driving livestock to the railway station in Carley to trucking directly to markets, non-winter-maintained roads to paved concession roads and the initial phone service at the farm to a cellphone in his pocket. Neil witnessed a lot of history and enjoyed quietly sharing these stories. In Neil’s youth, he was an active 4-H and Junior Farmers’ member with a special focus on both livestock and crop evaluation as well as weed identification. Over Neil’s farming career, his family raised beef cattle, fed hogs, shipped cream, grew potatoes and produced grain crops with the eventual focus to be on beef cattle production. In Neil’s later years, he took particular pride in his well-kept garden and pet dogs.
Neil was married to Jean (predeceased 2020) for more than 57 years. Neil looked after the farm while Jean taught school. They raised a family of four: John, Andy, Heather & Bonnie. Neil and Jean were very encouraging of Scouting /Guiding, 4-H, local fall fair participation and post-secondary education.
Neil was an active community member as a long-time director of Oro World’s Fair, retired Elder at Willis Presbyterian Church, Knox Cemetery Board Trustee, Oro Township History Committee member and he and Jean were named Oro-Medonte Senior Citizen’s of the Year in 2009.
Neil leaves behind his children: John (Sheryl), Andy (Lisa), Heather Nixon (Jeremy) and Bonnie Strachan (Paul). Neil will also be missed by his grandchildren: Sarah, Everett, Hugh, Alec, Lucy, William, Caroline, Isabelle and Josey. Neil is survived by his sister Dorothy (Michael Millar-predeceased), and predeceased by his twin sisters and brother in-laws Ada (Art Johnston) and Alice (Jack Anderson). Neil is survived by his Robertson in-laws, Bob Robertson (Donna) and John Robertson (Anne).
We would like to thank Neil’s medical team, friends, neighbours and family who offered support and visits over the past months.

Ross Allan McPhatter, of Leith, at the age of 66 years. Dearly loved husband of the late Lynn McPhatter (May 2012). Loving father of Darryl McPhatter and his wife, Tiffany, of Clarksburg and Kevin McPhatter and his wife, Lindsay, of Meaford. Proud grandfather of Avery, Eli and Laughlin McPhatter. Cherished son of Ruth McPhatter, of Owen Sound and the late Charlie McPhatter. Dear brother of Stephen McPhatter (Wendy), Paula Bergeron and Peggy Rouse (Stephen) all of Owen Sound and brother-in-law of Larry Jones (Beverley) and Heather Jones, both of Hamilton. Ross will be sadly missed by his aunt, Marjorie Perry, of Owen Sound and his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents-in-law, Lloyd and Olive Jones and his brother-in-law, Morris Jones.
A Memorial Visitation for Ross McPhatter will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, 1450 – 2nd Avenue West, Owen Sound on Sunday, May 27th, 2018 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Interment in Leith Cemetery. If so desired, the family would appreciate donations to the Chapman House Hospice or the Owen Sound Rotary Club – Camp Presqu’ile as your expression of sympathy and may be made through the BRIAN E. | Death* | Stephen Charles McPhatter died on 31 January 2025 in Ontario, Canada, at age 70; With our hearts weighed down by grief, we announce that Stephen Charles McPhatter, known as “Chopper”, was taken suddenly from us. Stephen passed away at home on Friday, January 31, 2025, in his 71st year.
Beloved husband for 45 years of Wendy McPhatter (nee MacNeil) of Owen Sound. Loving and proud father of Stephanie Nicol (Tim) of Owen Sound, Mark McPhatter (Kelly) of Chesley and Stacie Robinson (Kyle) of Owen Sound. Cherished grandpa of Ben, Sam, Violet, Lauren, Owen and Charlie. Dear brother of Paula Bergeron (Walter Edworthy) of Owen Sound, favourite son in law of William and Barbara MacNeil of Kemble, and brother in law of Roger MacNeil (Angie) of Caledon East. Stephen will also be missed by his nieces, nephews and friends.
Predeceased by his parents Charlie and Ruth McPhatter, and by his brother Ross McPhatter (Lynn).
Chopper “famously” grew up in downtown Annan, attending the one room schoolhouse. From a young age he loved working alongside his father at the family auto shop, McPhatter Motors. Following his passion for mechanics, Stephen received his auto mechanic and heavy equipment licenses. Stephen was who you called if something wasn’t working. Nothing was broken until he couldn’t fix it. Working on heavy equipment led him to a career as a long-haul driver, which took him all through Canada and the United States.
Stephen’s family brought him great joy and pride with many highlights, including camping at MacGregor Provincial Park and road trips to Florida. He was known for his dry sense of humour, famous dad jokes, and his love of banter. Stephen loved sports. In his younger years he played hockey, lacrosse and baseball. He was a true Boston Bruins fan and took great joy in pestering all Toronto Maple Leaf fans, especially his oldest grandsons and his longtime friend, Lavern.
Stephen’s true love was riding his Harley. He put many miles on his bike over the years, including checking a trip to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally off his bucket list. Stephen enjoyed hanging out in the garage, playing cards with his friends, spending time with his grandchildren, and taking care of his grand-dogs. He was truly a big teddy bear with a big heart. He will be missed by many people, including his close neighbourhood buddy, Tom.
In keeping with Stephen’s wishes, cremation is taking place, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492.
