(Witness) Fact 1 | He witnessed the Fact 1 of Morley Roy Shier; On October 3, 1911, Montgomery as Mrs. Ewan MacDonald was introduced as the minister’s new wife and honoured with a reception dinner at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Three of the families she met that evening – The Shiers, the Brookses and the Lapps – would never have expected to be mentioned in her books. Catherine* and James Shier’s farm was located a few acres away from the Leaskdale Church. They had three children in 1911: Mabel was nineteen; Morley, sixteen, was a student at Uxbridge High School; and Harvey was nine. The sons [of the three families] would have known the MacDonald’s for only a few years, but their families and relations became friends especially the younger siblings because they grew up during the fourteen years that Montgomery created and directed the Young People’s Association. Morley Roy Shier knew “Mrs. Mac” for about two years before he left to attend the University of Toronto’s teacher-preparation program. Bob Brooks was in Ewan’s congregation for about 6 years before he enlisted. Gordie Lapp was at home foe only a year before leaving to work and study pharmacy. They joined three different military units at different times between 1915 and 1917. These three young men represent the sacrifices that small communities all over Canada invested in the world conflict. Montgomery planned, wrote and revised Rainbow Valley during the final years of the war, from 1917 to 1918. Montgomery penned the dedication to the pilot Morley Shier and the two soldiers Bob Brookes and Gordie Lapp, when she finished the Rainbow Valley manuscript in late December 1918, three months after the death of the last casualty, Flight Lieutenant Shier. Several Shier family members were Montgomery’s friends, including Morley’s cousin, Mary Shier McLeod. Readers of Montgomery’s journals will recall Morley’s uncle, Dr. Walter Columbus Shier, who was a physician in Leaskdale and Uxbridge. Dr. Shier attended the MacDonald family and was the first doctor to treat Ewan’s depression. Another uncle was Rob Shier** who lived in Zephyr; his third wife was Lillis Harrison (Lily Reid), Montgomery’s household helper from 1912 to 1915 and a trusted friend throughout Montgomery’s life. Morley was a teacher first at Corson’s Siding, northeast of Leaskdale and then at Earl Grey School in Toronto. Shortly after Montgomery began work on Rainbow Valley, Morley stared pilot training. He went to England in May 1918, after basic flight training, to learn combat and reconnaissance skills at the British advanced flying schools. He was assigned to the 256th Royal Air force Squadron formed in June 1918 at Seahouses, Northumberland. The squadron did coastal surveillance for German submarines and flew two-seater Canadian built de Havilland DH-6 planes, with a range of about four hours of flight. One of the many nicknames for the DH-6 was “the Flying Coffin”. Shier became an active RFC pilot in June 1918 at the age of twenty-three. About one-quarter of the RFC squadron crews were Canadian. Most RFC combat pilots survived an average of about three weeks once they began their combat flights. Although reconnaissance pilots were not exposed to enemy fire as often as combat pilots, the risk to them was still significant; they were not armed but could carry bombs, and parachutes were not allowed because they were too heavy. After two months of flying, Flight Lieutenant Shier and his plane went down in the fog in the North Sea on Sept 6, 1918 about twenty miles from shore. Montgomery did not hear of Morley’s death until a month later, three days before Germany and Austria agreed to peace in October 1918.Shier’s name is on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton, England, erected by the Imperial Ware Graves Commission with the names of those lost at sea. Members of the Shier family placed a marker in the cemetery at Leaskdale and a plaque in the church to honour him at home. *a daughter of Jacob Shier and Catherine Rynard. **Robert Timothy Shier The preceding are excerpts from” L.M. Montgomery’s Rainbow Valleys, The Ontario Years, Chapter 2, To The Memory of Leaskdale and the Loss in the Great War, by Mary Beth Cavert. |

Death* | Dr. Walter Columbus Shier died on 10 December 1944 in Uxbridge, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada, at age 75; DR. W. C. SHIER PASSES IN HIS 76th YEAR A wide circle of friends and acquaintances will learn with regret of the death at his home in Uxbridge of Dr. Walter C. Shier Ba. A., M.D. in his 76 year, on Sunday, December 11, 1944 after being in poor health for several months. The funeral took place to Uxbridge cemetery on Wednesday, December 13, 1944, services being conducted under Masonic auspices, at his late residence, by Rev. T. L. Williams, of Chalmers Presbyterian church of which deceased was a member. Interment was made in Uxbridge Cemetery. The late Walter C Shier was born in Leaskdale, Township of Scott, in 1869, the fifth son of James Shier and Mary Anne Mooney. His paternal grandfather came from Adare, Limerick County, Ireland in 1826 and settled on a farm in the Fifth concession of Brock, and both his parents were raised in this township. They were of Irish Palatine extraction. An ancestor of six generations back, Adam Shier, quitted the vicinity of Hochdorf, in the Palatinate in 1709 and after a short stay in England, along with a number of the other emigrating Palatines was in August of that year settled by the British government at Court Mattress, Limerick, Ireland on this estate of the Lord Southwell. This ancestor had a brother who located in Scotland just before he himself went to Limerick. Two of the descendents of this brother were medical doctors in Demerara* and another descendent, John Shier, was the provincial land surveyor in Whitby during the early settlement of the County of Ontario. This man made the first survey of the present town of Uxbridge, which is used in deed descriptions to this day. Walter C. Shier was educated at public school in Scott Township, Uxbridge High school, Port Perry Model School, Ontario Business College, Belleville, Toronto Normal School, and University of Toronto. His degrees being B.A., 1897; M.B.** 1907, M.D.1928. In 1908 he married to Miss Martha Kaufman of Wellesley Ontario. He taught public school, model school and high school for years before he ever thought of entering medicine and left the principalship of Bracebridge High School to start his medical career and was in general practice in Uxbridge from 1907 to 1916 and was Grand Trunk and CNR surgeon from 1907 to his death and Coroner for the County of Ontario from 1908 until his death. Since 1916 he had devoted his attention to eye, ear, nose and throat consultations and anaesthetics. He took an active interest in municipal affairs during his earlier days and was a member of the town council and ex-chairman of the Uxbridge Utility Commission and his efforts in securing hydro power for the community undoubtedly resulted in that great service finally coming to Uxbridge. In 1932 he was President of the Ontario County Medical Society and was of great assistance in preparing the “History of the Medical Profession of the County of Ontario published under the auspices of the Association in1934. Dr. Shier was of a very studious nature and took special delight in family history, so much so, that he compiled a complete history and genealogical tree of the entire Shier family from the time its ancestors left the Palatine up to the present-day, which history should be published by the family or given some publishing house for publication. He was also very mechanically minded and his great recreation was manufacturing tools and other equipment in his completely equipped machine shop at the rear of his office. He was also a staunch member of Zeredatha Lodge, No. 220, A.F. & A.M. and at its last meeting was present and gave an excellent recitation during the evening. He was also a member of the now-defunct Nipissing Lodge, I.O.O. F. and a lifelong Conservative in politics, and will be greatly missed in the community. Left to mourn his death are his sorrowing wife and one adopted daughter, Mrs. Lorne Beare, of Timmins, Ontario and one sister, Mrs. William Weldon, Uxbridge, to whom the sympathy of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances is extended in their bereavement. |

When Walter graduated as a Stationery Engineer, he was the youngest to do so. At the age of 13, he won a cross Canada contest on “How to end World War I”. Both of my parents, although very private were proactive in volunteering and supporting many causes. My father, Anglican, was a Mason and my mother, United was a member of the Eastern Star. My parent’s dream was to live in Northern Ontario, and while retiring in North Bay on Trout Lake, their journey took them to New Liskeard, Blind River, and Hornell Heights Air Base. Daughter Sandra was born in Toronto, May 21, 1941 and Grandson Mark Shier born North Bay on January 18, 1963. With The family move To Trout Lake, Walter, who was an avid hunter became a staunch conservationist. He protected anything that flew or walked over his property. One of Walter’s greatest achievements was the designing and installing of the North Bay Air Base Heating system. This was an underground piping system which provided heat for not only the homes but all of the buildings, barrack, Messes, etc. He enjoyed his staff and was proud of their contribution includingafter hour Chess Tournaments. Thelma excelled at everything she did! Described as a Sunday School Teacher, Chaperone at all teen dances,Girl Guide Leader, Best Mom and Cook ever, an Encourager and Supporter. She kept everyone in stitches because of her antics. Her own family who never understood her moving North enjoyed their vacations on Trout Lake especially the Air Shows and solitude – not at the same time…. Thelma helped people physically, financially and emotionally. She was a beautiful person and anyone who knew her was better for it. Although my parents will never go down historically in North Bay, they were loved and will forever be part of what makes North Bay so great! |
