Dennis is lovingly remembered by his wife Marjorie of 52 years; children Carrie Bahris(Dale) of Abbotsford BC, Theresa Aronson(Duane) of Nelson BC, Jason Shier(Shannon) of Menifee, California and Sheryl Tymkow(Steve) of Kelowna, BC; his grandchildren Mark, Jael, Chantelle, Garrett, Celine, Tory, Liam and Gracie; and great grandchild Ayson. He is survived by his brother Ken Shier(Marilyn) and sister Jeanine Findlater(Doug). Dennis was raised in Vernon, lived in Telkwa as he worked hard as a loader operator and retired in Westbank. Dennis was a quiet and caring man. In his younger years he was an avid fisherman. He often took the whole family as well as extended family camping and on vacations which has left them with many fond memories. Although he was a man of few words, his close contact with family by phone, showed his great love for his family. His firm faith in the earthly resurrection prompted one of the last conversations with Marjorie to say “see you in Paradise.” And so we will. |

Growing up in the Depression had a lasting impact and precipitated the family's move, first to Ponoka in 1936, and finally to Calgary in the early 1940s. During the war Murray's goal was to become a pilot but as the RCAF had a surfeit of flyers he re-mustered as an air-gunner in the hopes of seeing action. He enrolled at the University of Alberta after the war, studying geology, leading to his future career in the oil and gas industry. At University Murray met Aileen Jordan Irwin and they married - Aileen in a beautiful blue velvet dress originally meant for Christmas celebrations - at Christ Church, Calgary on December 21, 1948. his many friends and family Murray was known as kind, compassionate and considerate. During his years working for Amoco Petroleum colleagues would remark on his mentorship of younger staff and his generosity in giving advice. He loved sports, and enjoyed hockey, badminton, bowling and -passionately - golf. He was a lifelong member and Past-President of the Earl Grey Golf Club in Calgary. Murray was also a devoted fan of big band music (and dancehall dancing in his youth) and cultivated many hobbies, including gardening and bridge, and was drawn to intricate projects he could devote craftsmanship to. He had a passion for geography and history, and a soft spot for animals - especially dogs. He maintained an enviable level of personal fitness and could often be recognized striding the four miles home along Elbow Drive from his downtown office, even during the sometimes polar Alberta winter. Although a difficult childhood made for reservation and caution, his personality shone through in the enjoyment he displayed in the company of others, the evident pride he showed in his children, delight in his grandchildren and great-granddaughters and in his underlying warmth and love of family. is survived by four children: Jerol, Molly (Art Norris), Mitch (Nancy Love) and Reid (Zoe Lasham); ten grandchildren: Jordan, Erin, Kate (Matt), Paul (Laura), Neal, Harlan, Eli, Belle, Jude and Kieran (Christina); and seven great-granddaughters: Scarlet, Lucy, Isabella, Hannah, Chloe, Ava and Hailee. Donna was a caring and talented mother devoted to her family. She always valued her time with her husband, her son and two daughters, her four grandchildren and great granddaughter. She admired their achievements and closely followed their comings and goings. Donna Ellen Shier was born October 18, 1937, at the old Ancker hospital in St. Paul. She graduated in 1955 from Wilson High School in St. Paul and in the fall entered the University of Minnesota where she met her future husband, Lowell Ludford, during a dance at the University. They were married October 19, 1957, at Hamline United Methodist Church in St. Paul and made their first home in Falcon Heights before moving to St. Anthony Village in 1961. At first, Donna started work as an office secretary, mastering typewriting and shorthand (later, medical shorthand). Returning to the University of Minnesota, Donna earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in both nutrition and nursing. Her RN came first after two years of nursing education at Anoka Ramsey Community College. Donna was the first person in her family and the first woman in her extended family to earn a college degree. Donna was an accomplished pianist and had been encouraged to obtain a degree in music but declined. However, she enjoyed playing for Job's Daughters and church services. Her nursing career took her to several hospitals and nursing homes but primarily she worked as a public health nurse for Ramsey County. Later, she served as a volunteer disaster services nurse for the Minneapolis Chapter of the American Red Cross. Donna was a good cook and her two daughters followed her lead. Her meals were always nutritious. Donna also was a good housekeeper and a fine seamstress. She made some of her own clothes and clothes for her children. Later in life she became a quilter and then mastered the technical procedures for computer-aided machine quilting and made several lovely quilts for members of her family on her Bernina 800 quilter. Donna loved to travel. As a girl she went on several motor trips with her parents to visit relatives in Canada. After her marriage, she and her husband traveled throughout Europe, Canada and the United States, visiting many of the most popular sight-seeing locations. Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Everett W. Shier, who was born and raised in Canada, and Ellen D. (Moore) Shier; her brothers Alfred, Lester, Lewis, John and Lawrence. Surviving her are her husband of 67 years, Lowell, her daughter Linda Ludford Drilling (Lloyd), daughter Pamela Ludford Finnerty (Kevin), son Warren Ludford (Stefania), grandchildren Joseph and Jack Drilling (Jera), Nicholas and Ava Ludford, and great granddaughter, Elaine Louise Drilling. A funeral service for Donna will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 9 at Centennial United Methodist Church, 1524 County Road C2, Roseville, MN 55113. | Death* | Dorothy Mary Grace Shier died on 9 November 2000 at age 86; DOROTHY SHOTBOLT On Thursday, November 9, 2000, at the Portage District General Hospital, Dorothy Shotbolt, of Portage la Prairie, formerly of Amaranth, Man., widow of the late Charles Arthur Shotbolt, surrounded by many family members, peacefully passed away at the age of 86 years. Prayer service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Monday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Johns Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 14 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Father Wayne Morrissey officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery. Dorothy was born October 11, 1914, daughter of Walter and Mary Shier at Kenmare, North Dakota. As a young girl, the family moved to Estervan, Sask., where she was raised and received her education. On August 6, 1931 she married Charles Shotbolt in Portage la Prairie. They then farmed in the Leifur District for a number of years. In 1940 they moved to Amaranth where her husband was employed with the Western Gypsum Mines. In 1960 they moved to Portage la Prairie where she was employed at the Woolworth Department Store for a short time before she became employed at the Manitoba Developmental Centre until her retirement in 1979. Dorothy was of the Roman Catholic Faith. She was a very avid reader especially the history of the Royal Family and biographies. As a pastime she enjoyed handicrafts, rug hooking, quilting and later she enjoyed crocheting. Her family were very special to her and looked to her for spiritual leadership. Predeceased by her parents, Walter and Mary Shier; husband Charles in 1991 after 59 years of marriage; son Gerald in 1999; daughter Sharon (Gordon) Ogilvie in 1967; two brothers, Ralph Shier and David LaBlanc; two sisters, Lena Cowan, Margaret Mann; she leaves to mourn her passing her sons, Keith (Lillian) of Delta, B.C., Richard (Diane) two daughters, Beatrice (William) Robb, Faye (Robert) Nickart all of Portage la Prairie; her daughter-in-law Grace of Winnipeg; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are twin sisters, Doreen Thompson of Brandon, Doris LeBlanc of Estevan, Sask., and numerous nieces and nephews.
