Fact 1* | From the Chronicles of Crandall, Manitoba, 1971
CHARLES WESLEY LEWIS ?Written by daughter Ruby Jamieson ?August 17, 1914, was the day on which Charles Wesley Lewis took his bride, the former Ida May Shier to reside on his farm 6-14-24, affectionately known as Sunny Side. ?Charles, the son of Wesley and Edith Lewis, was the oldest of six children, raised at Cherry Grove Farm and educated at Maple Shade School. Although both farms are in the municipality of Hamiota, the village of Crandall was always "Home". ?Ida, third daughter of Sam and Alice Shier in a family of six, attended Carlingville and Crandall Schools. ?Always very interested in community affairs, Charlie and Ida were also closely allied to the church. C.W. as he was invariably referred to by his wife served as Steward and Elder, while Ida, an accomplished musician, was organist and choir leader, as well as music teacher to many Crandall young people. ?Of their union, two daughters were born. Ruby Mae, the elder, married Lorne Jamieson, eldest son of the late Dr. Joshua and Mrs. Jamieson of Hamiota. They have two daughters, Sylvia Margaret, now Mrs. Larry Shaw of Cardale and mother of five; and Cynthia Mae, now Mrs. Paul Turney of Winnipeg. ?Viola Maureen, younger daughter, married Alex Quinsey and lives in Port Arthur. They have one son, Vernon Alexander Lewis Quinsey who is married and has a daughter. ?Through good times and bad, depression and inflation, Charlie and Ida, with their deep love and devotion for one another and for their many friends and neighbours, remained a source of strength and solidarity. ?When poor health forced the sale of the farm and retirement to Hamiota, Charlie and Ida were never lonely. Their little home echoed to the tinkle of tea cups and the murmur of happy conversation, with their many old friends. ?On December 17, 1957, we said good-bye to Charlie and Ida followed him on September 10, 1959. ?In Death as in Life, C.W. and his Ida are side by side in Crandall cemetery. |
