As a man he worked with his father in the Levering and Bliss area building barns. He also was a blacksmith for several years and had been employed as a mechanic for the Emmet county garage at Levering until his retirement.Pangborn was a member of the Levering Odd Fellows and had served as noble grand. Survivors include one son,Gerald C. Pangborn, of Mercer, Wisc; one daughter, Mrs.Henry Harmon, of Phoenix, Arizona; six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.body is at the Stone Funeral Home where friends may begin to call at 7 p.m. this evening. He was born on Oct. 24, 1922, in Levering, to the late Morton and Georgia (Schmalzried) Pangborn. He married the former Tresa Shell in Gladwin on Jan. 5, 1946. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 -1946 with two years in the South Pacific. He earned his bachelor degree from the University of Michigan and was employed by The Dow Chemical Co., working in the power department until his retirement in 1982. He then worked for Decker Energy International from 1984 to 1992. John was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers, and a lifetime member of Tay Beta Pi engineering honor society. He was a past member of the Bullock Creek School Board and the Midland County Ambulance Board. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America and in the administration of his church. He loved the out-of-doors, traveling extensively, he was an avid fisherman, hunter, and downhill skier. John visited Poland where he was interested in that country's economic reconstruction and was a major University of Michigan fan. He is survived by his wife, Tresa; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Cindy Pangborn of Harbor Springs and Thomas and Vickie Pangborn of Traverse City; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and John Fisher of Midland; his grandchildren, Molly Pastermack, Katie Schubert, Christie Wherry, Emily Davies, Heidi Pangborn, Jackson Fisher, Hobie Fisher and Axel Fisher; great-grandchildren, Ineka and Jonathan Pastermack; and his sister, Marie Bedient of Dalton, Mass. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, Feb. 2, 2008, 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Charles Keyworth officiating. Interment will follow at the Midland Cemetery with military honors presented by Midland Area Veterans and the U.S. Navy. Members of John's family will receive friends at the Smith-Miner Funeral Home Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Born in Levering, Mich. on Feb. 20, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Morton and Georgia (Schmalzried) Pangborn. She was a graduate of Pellston, Mich. High School. She worked in the Admissions Office at the University of Michigan for a number of years before moving to Lancaster, Pa. in 1959 where she earned a BA degree at Millersville College in Millersville, Pa. She was an active member of the Grandview United Methodist Church in Lancaster and was active in the Manheim Twp. Ambulance Association and served several years as its president. For many years, she read local newspapers on the Lancaster Association for the Blind radio station and was active in several programs in the Lancaster Council of Churches. She played an active role in the Faculty Wives organization at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster and in its Infirmary Auxiliary. On Nov. 28, 1943 she married Phillip E. Bedient; they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in 2011. She and her husband moved to Dalton in 2002 to live nearer to their family. She was predeceased by her brother, John C. Pangborn of Midland, Mich. She is survived by her husband, Phillip, of Dalton; her son Richard E. Bedient and his wife Elizabeth of Clinton, N.Y; and her daughter Mary Bedient-Wood of Dalton. She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Kate Bedient and Christopher Barnes of Seattle, Wash., Adam Bedient of Brooklyn, N.Y., Abigail and Lucas Polidoro of Dalton, and Lydia and John Short of Boston; and her great-grandson, Henry Phillip Polidoro, of Dalton. Funeral arrangements will be private with her ashes to be interred in the Bedient family plot in Carp Lake Cemetery in Levering, Mich. A memorial service is planned for the spring in Lancaster, Pa. at Grandview Church. Memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity. |

They made their home in Levering where he was a rural mail carried for 41 years until his retirement in 1953. He was a member and former president of the Rural Letter Carriers Association of Top O'Michigan and the Levering IOOF I90. Surviving are his wife; a son John of Midland and a daughter Mrs. Philip (Marie) Bedient of Lancaster, Pa; five grandchildren; a brother, Carl of Levering. Norene was a member at the Trinity Episcopal Church in West Branch for 15 years, and worked for Morris Richardson Real Estate in West Branch for 17 years. She was affectionately referred to as “Maxine” to those at work. She enjoyed visiting the West Branch Library. She was a huge animal lover of cats and dogs and enjoyed a fine glass of wine. Norene is survived by her daughter, Carol (Paul) Hubbell of Alger; son, Michael (Lori Baker) Cozad of West Branch; and grandchildren, Nicole Zolna and Erika Zolna both of Livonia, Jason Cozad, Madison Cozad and Nick Cozad all of West Branch. Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will be held on Friday, August 28, 2020 from 1-7 p.m. Visitation will be held with precautions, due to the current pandemic, limiting the number of attendees at a given time.
