Marriage* | John Teskey married Amelia Williamson on 29 December 1886; The Orillia Packet, Jan. 7, 1887- TRAFALGAR- A large party of friends and relatives assembled at the residence of Mrs. James Williamson, on Wednesday, the 29th December, to witness the marriage of her daughter Milly to Mr. John Teskey of Medonte. At the appointed hour the bridal party entered the drawing room to the strains of a wedding march. The bride, who was given away by her brother, David Williamson, Esq., looked charming. She was dressed in cream satin and oriental lace; ornaments, pearls and orange blossoms. Miss Maggie McDonald, of Ivy, cousin of the bride, first bridesmaid, was dressed in light blue nun’s veiling; trimmings, blue satin and oriental lace; ornaments, pearls. Miss Loula McConnell, of Craigvale, second bridesmaid, was dressed in light pink nun’s veiling; trimmings, pink satin and oriental lace; ornaments, pearls. Each carried a bouquet of rare exotics. The groomsmen were Messrs. Thomas and Samuel Williamson. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. William McConnell, of Craigvale, cousin of the bride. After the marriage, the large party sat down to a sumptuous breakfast. The health of the young couple was proposed and honoured by congratulatory addresses from several of the company. About four o’clock the company arose from the table. The bridal party, after the customary shower of rice, proceeded to the railway station- followed by a long procession of cutters- from which the happy couple started on their “honeymoon tour,” and began married life under favorable auspices for a bright and happy future. The bridal presents were numerous, showing by their elegance and costliness the high esteem in which the bride was held by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. Noticeable were much silverware and many fancy articles, the handiwork of her lady friends. |

Death* | John Teskey died on 22 May 1929 at age 81; The Orillia Packet & Times, May 30, 1929- OBITUARY- JOHN TESKEY- The sudden and unexpected death of Mr. John Teskey, at his residence near Warminster, in Medonte, on May 22, was a shock to relatives and friends. He was in his his eighty-second year, and the fourth son of the late Joseph Teskey and Mary Ann Shier, who came to this district in 1845. Deceased was born near Price’s Corner in Medonte on March 28, 1848, and was one of the early settlers whose numbers are rapidly becoming less. For several seasons he operated the first threshing machine in the district, which took the place of the flail, and was in great demand by the new settlers sixty years ago. It was hard work, for the roads were bad. The deceased did good work, and his services were in great demand. The funeral was held on the 25th of May from his late residence and was largely attended by life-long friends. The remains were laid to rest in the family plot in Orillia cemetery, where many poneers of the district repose. The pallbearers were George Teskey, Sarnia; B. Manly Teskey, Cleveland; Howard Teskey, North Bay; James and Reuben Teskey, Orillia, and Joseph LeGear, Allandale. His wife, Amelia Williamson, of Halton County died in 1920. Mr. Teskey is survived by one son, Roy Teskey, on the farm and one daughter, Mrs. W.C. Mortimer, of Winnipeg, who was present at the funeral. Two brothers, Joseph and William Teskey, Orillia are the only ones left of a family of seven boys and one girl. For many years the deceased and his brother William spent their joint birthday, March 28, in each others company, the day having been marked again this year as usual. The late Mr. Teskey was most highly respected and his death is regarded as a distinct loss to the community in which he resided and to his many Orillia friends.1 |

Fact 1* | The Orillia News Letter, October 17th, 1928- BRIEF BIOGRAPHIES OF PROMINENT CITIZENS- This week the News-Letter presents to its readers the portrait and a brief sketch of one of our oldest citizens, that of Mr. William Teskey, now in his eighty-third year. He was born at Northbrook, the Drinkwater farm, North Orillia, on the 28th of March, 1846. His parents, Joseph Teskey and Mary Ann Shier, settled near Marchmount in 1845, bringing with them his two eldest brothers, Benjamin and Charles, now deceased. When about a year old his parents moved to Medonte, taking up lot 2, concession 13, which was purchased frm Charles Hume, the founder of Marchmont. The Teskey family consisted of seven sons and one daughter. The subject of this article is the third of that family. The family name is of German origin, and is one of over a hundred families who settled in the County of Limerick, Ireland, in the reign of Queen Anne. Other families of this German settlement in Ireland were the Switzers, Shiers, Brethours, Doupes, Dulmages, St. Johns, Lodwicks, LeGeers, etc. These names are well known locally, and whose ancestral home was that part of Germany drained by the River Rhine. Why they left we will leave to the students of history to answer. It was all owing to a famous decree, passed by Henry IV in 1598 and revoked in 1685 by Louis XIV. When about five years old he went to school at Price’s Corners, and his only living classmate is J.B. Price, who resides on the Barrie road, Orillia. Since that time these two have been close personal friends. They hold many things in common. They are both Anglicans, veterans of the Fenian Raid of ‘66, and members of the Orange Association. His first teacher was Miss Wilkinson, then P.H. How. For some years he attended school at Jarratt’s, the most noted teacher there being Dugald McAlpine, who was fluent in Gaelic, a most fortunate thing for many of the pupils, who did not know a word of English.of those Scottish lads became fluent in the English language, such as Dr. John McLean, Dugald McNiven, John Livingston, and others no doubt who reside in Orillia. Mr. Teskey is also pleased to see on the streets Messrs. Patrick Lawlor and Thomas Reid, former class mates and members of other pioneer families of Medonte. The name Medonte is said to be that of a daughter of an Indian chief. In the year of confederation Mr. Teskey obtained his first County teaching certificate, and took charge of Leigh’s Corners school for the year 1867. In the following year he taught at Marchmont. To fit himself better for the profession, he went to the Normal School in 1869. Among the students were some who rose to hign and honorable positions in after years, such as Dr. Jas. L. Hughes and Sir George Ross, Premier of Ontario.returned to Marchmont in 1870 and in January, 1872, came to Orillia and remained intil 1878. In that year he was married to Helen, daughter of the late Thomas Horne, of Oro. She died on the 6th of May, 1927, within a year of their golden wedding. His family consists of three daughters and five sons- Mrs. H.G. Macpherson and Mrs. W.D. MacBride of Whitehorse, Yukon; Mrs. A. McDonald, Vancouver; Garrett, San Francisco; Clifford, Vancouver; Manley and Charles Harold, Cleveland; and Howard, North Bay. From 1878 to 1882 he taught at Coldwater, where he and his family had many friends. In the seventies he took an active part in athletic sports, and in 1873 in company with Thomas Phillips, W.O. Black and James Black, captured all the prizes offered in Cannington at a 24th of May celebration held there. He was also a member of the old fire brigade and the first baseball club, of which Moses Boyd and Andrew Harvie, well known citizens, were members. In the evening of his life Mr. Teskey is comforted by the knowledge of a happy, united family, devoted to their mother, whose memory is a benediction and inspiration.before stated, Mr. Teskey was an all-round athlete in his day, and held the championship for throwing a baseball. It is said by our older citizens that they have seen him throw a ball the distance of a town block. Another exploit was to throw a ball perpendicularly into the air and have it descend exactly to the spot on which he stood when throwing it.later years Mr. Teskey has devoted the greater part of his time to the garden which has grown famous from the fact that he has grown three crops a season from it. The News-Letter found him yesderday garnering in his root crop and preparing the soil for an early start next spring. |
