| Birth* | Garrett Robert Shier was born on 6 March 1939 in Columbia City, Whitley County, Indianna, United States. |
| He was the son of Garrett Amos Shier and Mary Esther Grace Horn. | |
| Death* | Garrett Robert Shier died on 5 January 2026 in Lake Havasu City, Mohave County, Arizona, United States, at age 86; Garrett Robert Shier, 86, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026. He was the third Garrett in his family—named after his father, Garrett Amos Shier, and his grandfather, Garrett George Shier. Garrett was born on March 6, 1939, in Columbia City, Indiana, to Garrett Amos Shier and Mary Ester G. Horn. During his youth, he lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Cleveland, Ohio; Lake Elsinore, California; and Glendale, California—experiences that helped shape his independence and resilience. Throughout his adult life, he also resided in Wichita, Kansas; Rancho Palos Verdes, California; Rolling Hills Estates, California; Battleground, Washington; Indialantic, Florida; Valley Center, California; and ultimately Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He earned his degree in Engineering from the University of Southern California and went on to a successful career as an Electrical Engineer Program Manager with Learjet and TRW. He invented the Cemf responsive series motor control circuit, and the patent was filed in 1964-02-04 and granted on 1966-11-01. Known for his discipline, intelligence, and strong work ethic, Garrett retired at the age of 55 after a distinguished career. Garrett raised his family in Rolling Hills Estates, California, where he was a devoted and steady presence in his children’s lives. He filled the household with love, projects, kids’ sports, many animals, road trips to Dove Springs for motorcycle riding, and trips to Lake Havasu for water-skiing. A hands-on father, he made his home welcoming to all friends and family. Following retirement, he moved to Battleground, Washington, and later to Lake Havasu City, Arizona—drawn by his love of the water and the opportunity to be near his brother. A true “Mr. Fix-It,” Garrett could repair just about anything. He was also an accomplished pilot and found great joy, freedom, and peace in flying. Family remembers him as stern but deeply loving, hardworking, fiercely independent, and unwaveringly devoted to his children. Garrett was preceded in death by his parents, Garrett Amos Shier and Mary Ester Shier, and by his brother, John Frederick Shier. He was proud of his Irish heritage—now mixed with Scottish—as well as his German and English ancestry. He was a Presbyterian and enjoyed going to Calvary Church in his later years. He is survived by his brother, David Wayne Shier, and sister-in-law Sue Shier; his children, Tamara Lynn Shier Litwin (Mark), Anita Danette Shier-Bruton, Debra Marie Shier-Grether (Greg), Jon Gary Shier (Reyne), and Gary Michael Adam Shier (Melissa); his grandchildren, Taylor Reyne, Garrett-Ryan, Bradley Allan, Cody, Tanner-Michael, Alison, Trinity-Marie, Jonathan Kaydan, Paria, Gabriel, Mary Grace, Wiley, and Sabrina-Tressa; and his great-grandchildren, Easton Anthony, Oakley Reyne, and soon-to-be Harley Rose. Also survived by his ex-wife and friend, Anita Lora Harris Silverberg, mother of his five children. He frequently said, “I had a great life.” Garrett will be remembered for his strength, ingenuity, love of flight, and the legacy he leaves through his family. He will be forever loved. |

| Fact 1* | In his book, the Irish Canuck Yankee written in 1913, C. John Sparling describes his time working on the farm of George Shier: George Shier, my next employer, was precisely the opposite to my previous boss. He was a most devout and thoroughly religious man. Of course he would never miss a church service. Both himself and all members of his family were ever present in the family pew in the little crossroads Methodist church, situated midway between the villages of Valentyne and Vroomanton. But church going was not all his activities regarding religious doings. He held high office in the councils of church circles. Sabbath school superintendent, class leadership, trustee, prayer-meeting attendant, lay preacher, or, as they call it in Canada, "local preacher", were all numbered amongst the various useful ways in which Mr. Shier helped along the cause. Even at times when the regularily ordained preacher, by reason of circumstances which he had no control of, failed to turn up at the church hour, this good man took his place, carrying the entire service through just like a trained hand, or regularily annointed minister. Not only were there times when these calls were made upon him in his own church; but quite frequently he would have to drive around the circuit filling the other pulpits as well. Then in revival time, when special efforts were put forth to bring the sinful into the fold, our good friend would be there, night after night, to aid and assist in the good work. To this method of doing I very often objected, for on returning to the house after a strenuous day's thrashing with a neighbour, who helped us when we were threshing, a lot of extra chores fell to my unhappy lot to perform, owing to the absence at some evanglistic services of Mr. Shier. Heavenly works were far more important in his estimation, than any earthly labour, so it devolved upon the hired man to make up the deficiency, whether he grumbled and swore, or not. In addition to all these churchworks, Mr. and Mrs. George Shier conducted Bible reading and family prayer every night and morning in their own home. All of this is mentioned with a view of indelibly stamping upon the minds of my readers the moral atmosphere in which I spent twenty-six months of my Ontario existence. Mrs. Shier treated me precisely as a member of her own family. She spared no pains in making her home pleasant for me. Two little girls and one small boy were her entire family. Generally two hired men and one working girl were also included in the household. But the first year I was there, I grappled so manfully with the farmwork, that it became unncessary to employ a second workman further than for about one harvest month, and another month for the fall ploughing. |

| Death* | Dr. George David Shier Ph.D died on 25 November 2025 in Midland, Midland County, Michigan, United States, at age 89; Dr. George David Shier, 89, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2025, in Midland, Michigan. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, George lived a life marked by curiosity, integrity, and quiet strength. He was born on January 8, 1936, in Columbus, Ohio, to George Raymond Shier and Marie (Shouse) Shier. In 1948, his parents moved the family to Golden, Colorado, settling on 50 acres of pastureland north of Golden. The family spent the summer of 1948 living in a tent while building the family home, with George and his two brothers as an important source of labor. George demonstrated an early passion for reading and a keen intellect. His love of reading began in childhood and remained a defining part of his life. As a high school senior, he earned an Engineer's Day Scholarship to the Colorado School of Mines after excelling in a four-part examination—his exceptional score in Current Events was credited to his habit of reading Time magazine cover to cover each week. After graduating from Golden High School in 1954, George entered the Colorado School of Mines. After two years of study, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1956, serving aboard the USS New Jersey and the USS Waldron out of Norfolk, Virginia. Following his honorable discharge in 1958, he returned to Mines and graduated with High Honors in Metallurgical Engineering. During his time there, he developed a strong interest in chemistry and decided to pursue graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana. It was at Illinois that George met Quita Verban, a fellow graduate student in the Zoology program. Their shared love of learning—and football—brought them together during a chance game day encounter while attending a University of Illinois football game. George and Quita were married on January 28, 1962, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in mutual respect and shared adventure. In 1964, George began his professional career at Dow Chemical Company as a research chemist in chemical process technology. Over the years he advanced through various roles—including supervisor and Lab Director in Central Research—before transitioning in 1990 to work with universities and government laboratories on research and development initiatives. He retired from Dow in 1995 after more than three decades of dedicated service. George’s intellectual pursuits extended far beyond the laboratory. He was an avid reader throughout his life, exploring topics across science, history, politics, and beyond. His deep knowledge was worn lightly; he was a man of few words who never spoke down to others or ill of anyone. Those who knew him valued his steady presence and thoughtful counsel. A lifelong lover of nature and the outdoors, George’s passion for camping began with family trips in the 1940s and continued throughout his life. Early adventures with Quita included mountain camping trips in Colorado; later excursions took their growing family across Michigan and beyond. As their children grew older, George led memorable canoe trips through remote Canadian rivers near Lake Superior—journeys that often lasted a week or more—and hiked destinations like Isle Royale and the Grand Canyon. In later years he took up kayaking and continued exploring natural landscapes with enthusiasm. After retirement, George turned his attention to gardening with characteristic precision and care. His garden flourished under his meticulous attention and became both a source of pride and a gift to others. He generously shared its bounty with friends, neighbors, and his church community, and his pickled green beans were especially beloved by his children and grandchildren. George was deeply involved with Midland United Church of Christ, alongside Quita. He served faithfully in many volunteer roles over the years, contributing quietly but meaningfully to the life of the congregation. Above all else, George cherished his family. He leaves behind three children: George Steven Shier (Kristen Shier), Andrew David Shier (Nicki Shier), and Anita Dawn (Shier) Helmus (Brian Helmus); seven grandchildren: Daane Helmus, Benjamin Helmus, Mitchell Helmus, Arianna Shier, Teddy Shier, Nathan Shier, and Owen Shier; two brothers: John Shier (Kathy Shier) and Daniel Shier (Clare Shier); sister-in-law Chiqeeta V. Jameson (Craig Jameson); as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Quita Verban Shier and granddaughter Samantha Shier. George’s legacy is one of quiet wisdom, steadfast love, intellectual curiosity, and enduring kindness. His familiar farewell—“Press on Regardless”—was more than just a phrase. It reflected how he lived his life: with grace through challenges and humility through success. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on March 14, 2026 at 1:00 pm, followed by a luncheon, at Midland United Church of Christ, 4100 Chestnut Hill, Midland, Michigan. |
