He died on 7 December 1904 in Ontario County, Ontario, Canada, at age 80; Udora: In the death of Mr. Jacob Shier, Sr. which occured on Dec. 7, 1904, the township of Georgina lost one of her oldest and most respected citizens.

Mr. Shier was one of the old Palatine stock who left Germany in about the year 1706 and migrated to Ireland during the reign of Queen Ann. Mr. Shier's parents came to Canada and settled in the County of La Prairie, Que., in which place Mr. Shier was born on Nov. 17th, 1824 and in the spring of 1832 came with his parents to Ontario and settled on the old Shier Homestead on the 5th Con. of Brock.

At the age of 24 Mr. Shier married Phoebe, third daughter of the late Col. Vrooman, to which were born two sons (Henry of Manilla and Adam of Woodville) and two daughters ( Mrs. Michael Rynard - now deceased - and Mrs. Philip Rynard) after which Mrs. Shier departed this life, leaving the subject of this memoir to raise his little family alone.

In the year 1859, however, Mr. Shier married Catherine Rynard, second daughter of the late Philip Rynard, who is left to mourn her loss, and to them were born four sons - Philip, Julius, and Jacob, who are still living on or neighbouring the old homestead, and Albert, who is a merchant in Chicago, Ill. and two daughters - Mrs. John Greg of Uxbridge and Mrs. Jas. Shier of Scott.

Of Mr. Shier's life very much could be said. In his private life, in religion and in politics, his actions were marked by an even temper, a sound mind and good judgement, which commanded the respect and admiration of his entire aquaintance. He was one of the most successful farmers of his time, as shown by the prosperity he left his family. He was a patient and obliging neighbour, a kind and provident father, and a loving and affectionate husband.

The funeral, which was held on Dec. 10th, was very largely attended, divine services being held at the house by Reve. Campbell of Sunderland and Stephenson of Vroomanton. The words of the preacher were a burning eulogy of the life of Mr. Shier. The pall-bearers were his six stalwart sons.

He witnessed the Fact 1 of Morley Roy Shier; On October 3, 1911, Montgomery as Mrs. Ewan MacDonald was introduced as the minister’s new wife and honoured with a reception dinner at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Three of the families she met that evening – The Shiers, the Brookses and the Lapps – would never have expected to be mentioned in her books. Catherine* and James Shier’s farm was located a few acres away from the Leaskdale Church. They had three children in 1911: Mabel was nineteen; Morley, sixteen, was a student at Uxbridge High School; and Harvey was nine.

The sons [of the three families] would have known the MacDonald’s for only a few years, but their families and relations became friends especially the younger siblings because they grew up during the fourteen years that Montgomery created and directed the Young People’s Association.

Morley Roy Shier knew “Mrs. Mac” for about two years before he left to attend the University of Toronto’s teacher-preparation program. Bob Brooks was in Ewan’s congregation for about 6 years before he enlisted. Gordie Lapp was at home foe only a year before leaving to work and study pharmacy. They joined three different military units at different times between 1915 and 1917. These three young men represent the sacrifices that small communities all over Canada invested in the world conflict. Montgomery planned, wrote and revised Rainbow Valley during the final years of the war, from 1917 to 1918. Montgomery penned the dedication to the pilot Morley Shier and the two soldiers Bob Brookes and Gordie Lapp, when she finished the Rainbow Valley manuscript in late December 1918, three months after the death of the last casualty, Flight Lieutenant Shier.

Several Shier family members were Montgomery’s friends, including Morley’s cousin, Mary Shier McLeod. Readers of Montgomery’s journals will recall Morley’s uncle, Dr. Walter Columbus Shier, who was a physician in Leaskdale and Uxbridge. Dr. Shier attended the MacDonald family and was the first doctor to treat Ewan’s depression. Another uncle was Rob Shier** who lived in Zephyr; his third wife was Lillis Harrison (Lily Reid), Montgomery’s household helper from 1912 to 1915 and a trusted friend throughout Montgomery’s life.

Morley was a teacher first at Corson’s Siding, northeast of Leaskdale and then at Earl Grey School in Toronto. Shortly after Montgomery began work on Rainbow Valley, Morley stared pilot training. He went to England in May 1918, after basic flight training, to learn combat and reconnaissance skills at the British advanced flying schools. He was assigned to the 256^th Royal Air force Squadron formed in June 1918 at Seahouses, Northumberland. The squadron did coastal surveillance for German submarines and flew two-seater Canadian built de Havilland DH-6 planes, with a range of about four hours of flight. One of the many nicknames for the DH-6 was “the Flying Coffin”.

Shier became an active RFC pilot in June 1918 at the age of twenty-three. About one-quarter of the RFC squadron crews were Canadian. Most RFC combat pilots survived an average of about three weeks once they began their combat flights. Although reconnaissance pilots were not exposed to enemy fire as often as combat pilots, the risk to them was still significant; they were not armed but could carry bombs, and parachutes were not allowed because they were too heavy.

After two months of flying, Flight Lieutenant Shier and his plane went down in the fog in the North Sea on Sept 6, 1918 about twenty miles from shore. Montgomery did not hear of Morley’s death until a month later, three days before Germany and Austria agreed to peace in October 1918.Shier’s name is on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton, England, erected by the Imperial Ware Graves Commission with the names of those lost at sea. Members of the Shier family placed a marker in the cemetery at Leaskdale and a plaque in the church to honour him at home.

The Last Will and Testament of Jacob Shier Jr;

I, Jacob Shier of Ryanroe in the County of Limerick and Parish of Adare by the Grace of God kept in possession of a sound mind but with a weak body do make this my last Will and Testament. First I order that my body be decently interred in Adare Chruch yard at the right side of my beloved wife Mary Shier and it is my sincere wish that my wife Catherine Shier be buried at my right hand side. Second, I leave to my son John Jacob Shier (£150) one hundred and fifty pounds stg. to be paid him one year after my death. He is to be provided with suitable clothes and diet during that period. He is to be obedient to his step-mother and help her to cultivate the land during his stay with her if however he does not do so, I leave him to the mercy of his step-mother and the other executors. Third, I leave to my daughter Mary Ann Shier the sum of (£150) one hundred and fifty pounds stg. to be paid to her two years after my death. She is to stay with her step-mother but if she gets married before the above two years expire and makes a match agreeable to her step-mother she is to get the above (£150) one hundred and fifty pounds on the day that the ceremony is performed if she so desires. She is to make herself as useful as possible to her step-mother but should she not be said by her and the other executors I leave her entirely to whatever mercy they may exercise towards her. She is to be provided with suitable clothes and diet while she lives with her step-mother. Should Mary Anne and John Jacob wish to emigrate to America two years after my death I have no objection whatever. John Jacob is not to get married within one year after my death without the consent of his step-mother. The interest of John Jacob's money as above willed him by me as also the interest of Mary Anne's money as also above willed her by me shall be given to my beloved wife Catherine to help in providing them (John Jacob or Mary Anne) with respectable clothing and support. Should John Jacob or Mary Anne die before the time comes when the above provisions of this my Last Will and Testament are carried out with reference to them in either or both cases the money above willed them lapses to my Executors to be lodged in Bank or otherwise safely secured for the use of my unprovided children. Fifth, I order that five pounds a year be paid to the Methodist Connexion in Adare during the life of John Moore. The insurance money is to be lodged in the Bank or otherwise safely invested in the name of my wife Catherine Shier and in the name of my other executors for the use of my unprovided children. Fifth, I leave to my wife Catherine Shier the entire control of all my stock and chattels , all my money in Bank, all money represented by Promissory Notes, all insurance money and all other moneys and value after paying my lawful debts for the use of herself and children that is Joseph, Samuel, Rebecca, Richard, Catherine and Emily Alice. Should however my wife Catherine Shier marrry or do anything that would disgrace my children, she is to be dispossessed out of my house and property by my other executors and she is to get only two pounds to take her to America. I appoint my wife Catherine Shier Executrix together with Richard Heavenor, Bamlett Shier and Tobias Shier as my Executors given under my hand this 16th day of December, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy- One.

Jacqueline Boettcher, late of Estevan, SK passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at the age of 61 years.

Jackie will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister, auntie and friend who prioritized spending time together and always encouraged making memories. Jackie had the ability to light up a room with her warm and kind nature and was known for her passion for gardening and flowers – the only thing she loved more was her family.

Jackie’s memory will be lovingly cherished by her husband of 44 years, John; sons, Wesley (Angela) and Wade (Danilo); grandchildren, Danielle, Caleb (Lilly) and Taylor; brothers, Paul and Patrick Shier as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and her loving dog Piper who never left her side.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Jeanne Shier; siblings, Mary Brock, Ken Shier, Carole Stefura, Bernard Shier, twin sisters in infancy; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law as well as nephews and nieces.

In keeping with Jackie’s wishes, a formal funeral will not be held. The family will celebrate Jackie’s life privately.

In lieu of flowers or donations, Jackie requested that you take a friend out for lunch and make some memories.

D. Shier passed away Friday morning May 21.The late Mr. Shier had been failing for nearly a year and since February was almost continually confined to his home, yet his death came to his family and large circle of friends as a great shock. He was not permitted to suffer any pain, and maintained cheerful resignation to God’s divine will, and enjoyed to the last full use of his intellect, conversing freely with his family and friends, the cause of death being senile paralysis.
James Dawson Shier was born July 10, 1845, in Brock Township Ontario County, descendant of United Empire Loyalist lineage, and receiving his early education amidst pioneer surroundings, there where instilled into the youthful mind those principles which later on during the struggle for success, revealed the man in his true greatness.
He was the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Shier, his parents coming from Ireland in the early thirties settling in Brock Concession 14, that township being then a dense forest. In 1837, his father Philip Shier raised a company of 100 men during the rebellion and marched with them to Toronto for active service, but found the rebellion over when they arrived. After his 25^th year of age, the ambition and energy of the young man impelled him to leave the farm to seek his fortune in wider fields.
His advent into the lumber business dates from 1870 beginning at the bottom of the ladder as he worked his way up till he became proprietor of a thriving shingle industry at Washago, subsequently he removed to Severn Bridge where he remained four years building up a good business in the manufacturer of shingles, finally he had to increase his capital that he was able to come to Bracebridge and buy out the old saw mill here, which

became the foundation of the present vast business: Under his shrewd and progressive guidance a great industry was established, the business becoming one of the greatest in Canada. The Shier Lumber Company being the first in Canada to place the double cutting band saw which enabled them to vastly increase the output. In less than thirty years the young man who went into the camps as a humble worker, had been transformed to a great exporter the annual output running between 15 and 20 million ft., he also becoming President of the company.
Mr. Shier was a man of industrious, energetic character and was level headed in business. Nor were his energies expended wholly on the building of his own fortune. To the town of Bracebridge he freely gave his service representing the council from 1892 till 1900 and 1904. In 1903 he successfully contested the office of Mayor, filling that position and the term of councillor with the same energy as in the management of his own business. A fluent speaker, his conviction were always gained for the town’s welfare. In a large measure it was due to his efforts that the electric lighting, waterworks and other modern civic improvements were installed.
In religion Mr. Shier was a Free Methodist, and comes of a family who had been Methodists for generation. He had shown great activity in church work as Superintendant of the Sunday School and class leader for 20 years also acting as local preacher and steward. He was a good friend to mission. Some time ago he sent a missionary, the Rev. W. Wilson, to the North West sustaining him there for a number of years. This was the beginning of the work of the Free Methodist church in the West, it has grown rapidly until there are now two conferences. Mr. Shier also supported other missionaries in foreign fields. Reference was made to his kindness to the poor.
Last Christmas he said to the Sabbath School that he felt he might not be with them another Christmas and wished to make them a present. He had sent away for a number of Bibles and presented them each with a Bible.
On March 12, 1878 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Jackson, an estimable lady, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James H. Jackson, merchant, Severn Bridge, a pioneer of that district who also held several offices of responsibility. Besides the widow, who is left to mourn the loss of

a faithful husband, are the following children: William, Kenneth, Milton, Roy and Miss Olive, all of Bracebridge and the full wing of brothers and sisters: Mr. Thomas Shier of Cambray, father of Messers Daniel P. and John T. Shier of Bracebridge; Messers John A. and Samuel Shier of Carnduff, Sask; Mrs. P. Dawson, Beaverton; Mrs. R. Dawson and Mrs. J. J. King, Cannington; Mrs. Wm Kelly, Marlette, Michigan and Mrs. R. Dukelow, Bad Axe, Mich. Mrs. Margaret Dawson, Cannington who is now in her 95^th year is an aunt of the deceased. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock and was one of the largest seen in town for many years. After a short service at the home the remains were conveyed to the Free Methodist Church. The service was taken by Rev. Mr. Llingerland, the pastor in charge and Rev. A. B. Lewis, Bishop, Toronto.
The pall-bearers were Messers: John Thompson, representing council; James Gibson and Capt. A. Leader, the church; Jos. McLean and Wm. Fraser, the employees: and W. J. White. The Mayor and Council attending in a body. The employees of the lumber mill marched at the head of the cortage, as well as the Sunday School children. The Board of Trade and School Board were also represented. Those from a distance attended: Messers Richard O. Shier and Carol I. Shier, Marlette, Mich., nephews of the deceased; Mrs. P. Dawson, Beaverton; Mrs. R. Dawson and Mrs. J. J. King, Cannington; C. Dawson, Beaverton; Rev. A. B. Simpson of Toronto; Mr. and Mrs. W. O. The floral contributions were many and beautiful, a special rig piled high with flowers. Besides wreathes from family and personal friends we noticed a high arch with gates ajar from the employees; wreathes each from the town, Church and Sunday School. (The business he leaves will continue under the same name, management and policy since its inception.) Many expressions of sympathy have been received by the family from near and distant friends of the family.

CADILLAC -- A 19-year-old Cadillac youth drowned while swimming more than 60 feet to shore from a boat in Lake Mitchell Saturday.
Dead is James Shier, who was riding in a boar with his parents, City Police Sgt. and Mrs. William J. Shier of Cadillac, Wexford County Sheriff officials said.
While in the boat, the youth reportedly told his parents he would swim to shore from the boat, officials reported.
Shier "went down" about 60 feet from the Mitchell State Park beach, a sheriff official said.
The youth was brought to shore by two Cadillac residents in a pontoon boat and taken by Wexford County Ambulance to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, officials said.
Born Feb. 19, 1953, at Cadillac, Shier attended Cass Elementary School and graduated in 1971 from Cadillac Senior High School.
He was president of his senior class, was vice president in his junior year and was on the student council for four years. He served on the student advisory council for the principal during his senior year and received a Senior Service Award by the senior class members.
He was attending Central Michigan University at Mt. Pleasant, taking computer service and mathematics.
For the past two weeks, he worked for the Keebler Cookie Co. as a salesman. He was a Junior Rotarian and attended Christian Reformed Church at Cadillac and Mt. Pleasant.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shier of 711 Fourth Street, Cadillac; and one brother, CTTSM William E. Shier of the U.S. Navy, serving in Guam.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Christian Reformed Church at Cadillac with Rev. Abel Poel, Rev. George Grettenberger and Rev. Maynard Nieboer of Mt. Pleasant officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at any time at Peterson Funeral Home at Cadillac.

Jim was retired military having served in both the Army and the Marines. He was a quiet and faithful man who took great pleasure in serving as an usher at St. Gerard Church in Lansingand being a good neighbor. He was an earnest and honorable man who fought his last battle with an enemy he could not conquer...a raging virus which stole his ability to breathe and ultimately his life.

Due to the current circumstances, there will be no funeral or memorial celebration at this time. He will be interred at the Ft. Custer National Veterans Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan, and the family will plan a celebration of his life at a later date.

Those wishing to honor Jims life may make a donation in his name to St. Gerards Church or the Sparrow Hospital Foundation in honor of the nurses who stood by his side when others couldnt.
