A young girl who suffered with osteosarcoma and set up a foundation to help other youngsters with rare forms of cancer has succumbed to the disease.
Fourteen-year-old Hailey Holmes passed away in hospital this past Wednesday with the return of her osteosarcoma and leukaemia, her mother and Alderville Band Councillor Jody Holmes said.
There will be a viewing Monday at the Comstock Funeral Home in Peterborough between 5 and 9 p.m. On Tuesday, there will be a service at the Alderville Community Centre at 1 p.m., she said.
Hailey was just 12 in 2014, recovering from a cancer operation on her leg but already helping other young people through the Hailey’s Comet Foundation, when a significant Alderville bluegrass event became a charitable one for the Foundation. With her daughter having the same cancer as Terry Fox, Hailey’s mother said at that time the Foundation would help where cancer research had not made the same gains as it has because of the success of the annual Terry Fox runs.
Money from the Foundation will be given in Hailey’s memory to Sick Kids in Toronto. At this time the family doesn’t have the strength to keep it going, she said.
