Death* | Pauline Muriel Feast died on 13 March 2023; It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of our mother, Pauline King, on Monday, March 13, 2023, at the age of 93. Predeceased by her husband, Clifford, Pauline is survived by her children, Kathryn (Mike), Larry, Janet (Murray), and Paul. She was a loving and fun grandmother to Andrew (Melissa) and Fiona. Her compassion for others, playful sense of humour, and commitment to family, will be greatly missed. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Mom's PSWs, Fiona, Gema, and Mary. Their kindness and caring ways made Mom's life more comfortable in the difficult years she had recently experienced. Honouring Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral. Because Mom loved dogs, you may wish to consider a donation to the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society (or charity of your choice) in her memory, in lieu of flowers. Death* | Dr. Robert Bury Ferguson died on 19 January 2015 in Victoria Hospital, Winnipeg, Winnipeg Metropolitan Region, Manitoba, Canada, at age 94; ROBERT BURY FERGUSON It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Robert (Bob) Ferguson on January 18, 2015, age 94. Bob passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital with family by his side following a brief illness. Bob was born on February 5, 1920 in Galt (Cambridge), Ontario to Alexander Galt Ferguson and Harriet Henrietta (Bury) Ferguson. His parents and his brother Ian predeceased him. Bob will be sadly missed but always remembered by his beloved wife, Margaret Warren Ferguson, his sister Mary Phelps, his three children Lyn Ferguson (Nick Martin), Robert W. Ferguson, and Marnie Ferguson (Dave Skidmore), and by his sister-in-law Mary Campbell. A loving grandfather and mentor, "Buzz" will be missed by his four grandchildren, Graeme Schwindt (Donaya), Christopher Ferguson-Martin (Karen Orr), Gillian Ferguson-Martin (Brad Keizerwaard), and Madeleine Skidmore, and his two great-grandchildren, Ian and Clare Schwindt. Also mourning his passing are his nieces and nephews, many relations across Canada and by a wide circle of cherished friends, colleagues, former students, and acquaintances. Bob grew up in Galt, Ontario and graduated from Galt Collegiate Institute in 1938. He earned a B.A. (1942), M.A. (1943), and PhD (1948) from the University of Toronto. Bob had a long and distinguished career in mineralogy and crystallography. He joined the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Manitoba in 1947, and led the department through three decades of rapid growth in mineralogical and crystallographic research. He retired as a Distinguished Professor in 1985, and continued his research and participation in the department as a Professor Emeritus. He was honoured with the Hawley Award by the Mineralogical Association and he was a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Bob met his dear wife Margaret in Winnipeg and they married December 29, 1948 in Edmonton, Alberta. They made their home in Wildwood Park where they lived very happily for 62 years. During his career Bob took three research leaves and he and Margaret cherished their time living in Cambridge, England (1949-1950), Oxford, England (1972-1973) and Adelaide, Australia (1979-1980). Bob loved to travel and he and Margaret made many fondly remembered trips to several world locales and to Ontario and British Columbia to visit family and friends up until 2012. Bob had a very close relationship to his church community, the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg. Joining the church in its earlier location on Banning Avenue in 1959, Bob and his family were regular attendees and participants in church life for many years. Bob volunteered his time in many ways to the church, as board president and member of many committees over the years. It was through the church community that he and Margaret met many of their dearest friends. In 1968, Bob and Margaret built their cottage on Big Duck Island in The Lake of the Woods. Bob loved "the lake." Whether he and Margaret were spending time with their family and friends, hosting Unitarian weekends or working on a building project, Bob cherished his many memories of cottage life. During the winter months, Bob took an active interest in and avidly supported Winnipeg's cultural community, the Manitoba Theatre Centre, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, The Manitoba Opera, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Bob was a passionate humanist and supported many organizations that promoted peace, social justice, and equality for all. A memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent on Saturday, February 7 at 3:00 p.m. The family would like to thank the staff at Victoria General Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation to an organization of their choice. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com he Mineralogical Association of Canada has lost a founding father, a pillar of the association since its inception, and an important mineralogist and crystallographer. Bob Ferguson was one of the 16 mineralogists who met at the Mines Branch on Booth St. Ottawa on Aug. 23, 1954 who set up the mechanism for the founding of the MAC in 1955. He was president of our Association in 1977, and honored with the Hawley Award in 1981. In 2013, at the age of 93, he attended the MAC luncheon at the annual GAC-MAC meeting, and produced a remarkable gift of the performance by a professional musician of a composition by Martin Peacock. Bob attended the University of Toronto from 1938 to 1947: B.Sc., 1942; M.Sc., 1943; Ph.D., 1948. His advisor was Martin Peacock, a great mineralogist and leader in X-ray crystallography. His graduate studies included the crystallography of aluminofluorite from the famous Ivigtut cryolite deposit in Greenland. The students of Professor Peacock, including Bob, spread the use of X-ray crystallography in Canada. Bob honored his mentor through the MAC, by having the Past-Presidents Medal renamed as the Peacock Medal. Bob was appointed Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Manitoba in 1947. Professor George Brownell, Head of the Geology Department, also arranged funds for the purchase of equipment for an X-ray laboratory. One of his first research projects was to determine the crystal structure of albite, with W.H. Taylor of Cambridge, and their first publication on this subject was “The crystal structures of low- and high-temperature albites” (Ferguson R.B., Trail R.J., & Taylor W.H., 1958, Acta Crystallographica, vol. 11, p. 331-348). His interpretation of the order-disorder of Si-Al in the tetrahedral sites was “vigorously attacked by the feldspar gurus of the time” (his words); this caused him great anxiety for some years; good science eventually upheld his work. He went on to produce many publications, the majority on feldspar composition and structure, Si-Al ordering, and the determination and uses of bond lengths and bond strengths in crystal structure determinations. Bob had 3 notable postdoctoral fellows viz: K.V.Subbarao, Petr ?erný, and Frank Hawthorne. Bob attracted Petr ?erný to Manitoba as a post-doctoral fellow in 1968, using the lure of the Tanco pegmatite, and Bob and Petr began a long collaboration on the minerals of Tanco that involved Joel Grice and Frank Hawthorne on Bob’s side, and a list of luminaries of pegmatology on Petr’s side. Bob’s role as a teacher and mentor has been praised by his students, with the special recognition of having a mineral named after him, bobfergusonite (a transition-metal phosphate mineral discovered in a pegmatite at Cross Lake, Manitoba). Also, several of his graduate students and post- doctoral fellows have been honored by having minerals named after them, viz.: bobtrailite, trembathite, gaitite, ?ernýite, griceite, and frankhawthorneite. Bob had a major effect on the science of crystallography in Canada; in addition to his” mineralogical children”, Bob introduced many chemists, physicists, and other disciplines, to crystallography through his teaching and collaboration. He retired in 1985 as Professor Emeritus, and was an active participant in the intellectual life of the Department for many additional years. This brief account of Bob’s life in science and education fails to record the charm, goodness of heart, charitable and community initiatives, and optimism that captured generation after generation of students and colleagues. Bob was born in 1920 in Galt, Ontario. He married Margaret Warren in 1947; many of our members have met her and would like her and family to know that the memory of this kind, helpful, gentleman and scholar will not be lost in the memory of the Mineralogical Association of Canada.
