She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Kristine Shier Edie (Robert), Michael Jr. (Amy), Andrew, Rosemary Ellis (Jerry), Paul H. Johnson, Jeffrey Harwood (Anne), Anna Johnson (Marc), Stephen Middlemas (Meredith), and Sarah Middlemas (Don MacDonald). Great-grandchildren include: Claudia and Elise Edie, Chelsea Kidd-Edie, Kaitlin, Alex and Adam Shier,Rachel, Alison, Raynard, and Matthew Jokie, Ashley Tesluck, Grayson and Eli Shier, Joe (Erin), Jason, Justin and Jesse Ellis, Calum and Davin MacDonald and three great-great grandchildren: Isabel, Elisa and Callum. Once while crossing the Ontario border with all of her six children in a station wagon, she was asked by the Customs agent “Are those all your children or is this a picnic?” She responded – “They are all mine and it ain’t no picnic”. One of her favorite biblical quotes was: “whatever you do to the least of my brethren you do unto me”. Her life reflected that commitment. Louise dedicated sixty years of service to many community organizations and was particularly devoted to helping the developmentally disabled. She was a founding board member of the Blue Water Developmental Housing Inc. She also served the community as a member or director of: Girl Scouts – Michigan Waterways Council, St. Clair County RICC, Women’s Association for the Mentally Retarded, Community Living Centers, Blue Water Clinic, Marydale Center for the Elderly, ARC of St. Clair County and Michigan, Model Life Services Working Committee, St. Clair County Center for Independent Living and the St Clair County Community Mental Health. Louise received numerous awards and citations for her good works. These included the Franklin Moore Award from the Blue Water Clinic, the Scotty Hanton Award from the Goodwill Industries, the Reverend John R. Hogan Humanitarian Award, many citations from local mental health organizations for her work with the developmentally disabled and several Michigan Governor’s Awards for her humanitarian activities. She was an enthusiastic golfer, gardener, world traveler and bridge player. She was a member of the Port Huron Golf Club, the Port Huron Garden Club and several bridge clubs. She was a keen student of the Bible participating in several Bible Study groups. Louise was an avid reader leading “Great Books” discussions particularly with younger student readers. In spite of all the time commitments to various organizations she always found time to devote to her family and friends. Where there was sometimes doubt, she always made it clear that she believed wholeheartedly in each of her children. Louise never left doubt with regard to her integrity and honesty. She possessed a remarkable sense of humor that was displayed regularly. She was always great counsel to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Louise could find the bright light in any situation regardless of the apparent dire outlook. Louise requested that rather than flowers, a donation be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. She and John were supporters of the good work being done at the Community Foundation, People’s Clinic, the Mid-City nutrition and Goodwill Industries.
