Born in Lindsay, Ontario, Carl moved with his family to Toronto during his high school years. Always a sportsman, he won city and provincial championships in football and baseball, and began his golf career in the early 1950s, becoming Assistant Professional at both the Toronto and York Downs Golf Clubs. He played in the Canadian Open, where he first encountered his hero, Arnold Palmer. Carl moved north to Sudbury in 1957 to work as Club Professional at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club until his retirement in 1992, overseeing innumerable tournaments and events, including the annual Invitational, as well as everyday golf operations. Once referred to as the “Local Legend”, he was inducted into the Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. A highly respected golfer and businessman, Carl was a community builder who helped develop both professional and recreational sports in northeastern Ontario. He was a teacher, mentor, and advisor, who believed in service and contributing to one’s community. Nothing delighted him more than seeing young people progress into successful adults. We will miss Dad’s strong encouragement, guidance and compassion, and his strong legacy will live on within us. Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Carl’s life at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club, 400 Walford Road, Sudbury on Sunday, December 4th, 2016, beginning at 12:30 p.m., with words of remembrance beginning at 2 p.m. Interment to take place at the family plot at Civic Cemetery. Leslie Alexander Evan Venables, D.D.S., born February 25, 1920 in Winnipeg, Canada died at his Silvana, WA, home on March 15, 2009.graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, he provided adult dental services in Everett and Marysville, WA, served on the staffs of Everett General and Everett Providence Hospitals, was a part-time instructor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, and for several years was a consultant to Children's Orthopedic Hospital. In his youth, for many summers, he was a counselor at YMCA Camp Widgiwagan, leading extended canoe trips into wilderness areas of northern Minnesota. As a Washingtonian, he volunteered as a Boy Scout leader; developed a north county youth band; was a 4-H leader; served as president of Association for Retarded Citizens several terms; and headed the development of Quilceda House, Marysville, a residence for persons with developmental disabilities. He was a founder of Cascade Curling Club, and a long term member of Everett Elks Club, Masonic and Scottish Rite Lodges. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Mabel Venables; and brother, James. is survived by his wife of 66 years, Hazel; daughters, Leslie, of Marysville, Karen (Bob) Harper, of Stanwood, WA, Vicki (Laurin) Blacken, of Hubbard, Oregon, and Jodi Coy, of Gig Harbor, WA; and grandchildren, Lars (Jun), Kylie (Grant), Hans Erik, Nels Olin, Garrison, and Gillian.
