Shrapnel 3-30 p.m. wounding 1 O.R. – at 6:30 pm. Germans commenced with Trench Mortars on Trench 63. Support & Communication trenches continued until 8:15 p.m., doing considerable damage to front line and Supports & dugouts in support line. ENEMY seen to leave his trench in attack at 8:15 p.m. & driven by Rifle, M.G. & Artillery fire. Capt. Adams remained cool and had situation in hand at all times. Signals were cut but sufficient service maintained by runners – CAPT. G. O. McNair killed. 8 killed and 14 O.R. wounded – shell shock, missing 12 O.R. Working Parties - 2 Officers 252 O.R. 3 May, 2016. Cloudy, no wind – cool. Rain in early morning, situation quiet. Gas Alert cancelled 11:05 a.m. and helmets ordered off. Casualties 2 O.R. wounded, 1 O.R. wounded shell-shock. Mine exploded on our left at 8:30 p.p., felt the shock distinctly, no demonstration by enemy in retaliation. Supplied working parties as usual, Inter Coy. Relief completed 10:30 p.m. Note: The War Diaries for the 58th Canadian Infantry Battalion as well as Canada’s Virtual Memorial (CVM) state that Capt. G.O McNair was killed on May 1, 1916. Although CVM states that Thomas Edward Shier was killed on May 2, 2016 as the War Diaries state there were no casualties that date, we must assume that Pte. Thomas Edward Shier was actually killed on May 1 or he suffered injuries that day and passed on May 2, 2016. |

Tom will be lovingly remembered by his sons Trent, Kelly (Michelle), Sean (Betty), and their mother Betty; sisters Lila Cole and Audrey Mann; sister-in-law Mona Shier; grandchildren Jocelyn, Sophia, Jared, Olivia, Breanna, Gavin, Brandon and Shayla; six great-grandchildren and his partner Peggy Irvine. Tom will also be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews Janice, Gary, Wendy, Johnny, Cheryl, Audrey and Clinton. Tom was predeceased by his father Victor, mother Alice, brother Melvin and brother-in-laws Gary and Mel. Tom was born in Stonewall, MB and was raised in a log house in Bissett, MB. After finishing school, Tom worked at Ernie's Bakery in Bissett. After working at Ernie's for a period of time, Tom began working at San Antonio gold mine in Bissett. It was during this period that Tom met Betty. They were soon married and had three sons. Tom eventually accepted a job at Tanco mine near Lac Du Bonnet. After living in Lac du Bonnet for a while Tom built a log home with his sons in Auglen Park. Tom went on to work at various mines throughout his career. During these years he made many friends in the mining industry. He always talked about these people and they all held a special place in his heart. Tom enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and would light up when they came to visit. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his later years, he enjoyed coffee and conversation with friends around Lac Du Bonnet. Tom was a long-time Legion member, and this is where he met Peggy. Tom and Peggy enjoyed spending time at the Legion as well as their shopping trips to Selkirk. On Friday February 8 th 2013, a celebration of Tom's life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Lac Du Bonnet from 1pm – 4pm.12243834. |

Tim passed after a short 2.5 month battle with cancer at home with his family by his side. Tim was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved the outdoors. He loved camping with his family and riding the trails on his side-by-side. He was pre-deceased by his Father (John) and Mother (Dorothy). He leaves behind his beloved Wife Dora of 46 years, his Daughters Lisa and Carrie, his 2 Granddaughters Taya and Hailey, his Brothers Sid and Jamie (Barb) and Sister Brenda (Andy) as well as nieces and nephews. As per Tim's request there will be no service. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Calmar Medical Clinic for their compassionate care, as they are unable to accept donations, donations can be made to the Calmar Art Society located in the same building. |

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Chapel of the Valley-L.B. Hall Funeral Home, with Carlos Pimentel, pastor of Calvary Chapel, officiating. Private burial will be at Granite Hill Cemetery. Contributions may be made to a memorial fund for his wife, Katie, at Rogue Federal Credit Union, 751 S.E. Seventh St., Grants Pass, OR 97526. Shier was born April 3, 1966, in Tacoma, Wash. In 1976, his family moved to Grants Pass from Europe, and he graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1983. He worked for Greenleaf Industries for 22 years. In 2002, he married Katie Crisp, who survives. He enjoyed jet skiing, dirt biking, camping, fishing, gardening, electronics and mechanics. In addition to his wife, survivors include his father, Neil Shier of Grants Pass; a sister, Tamela Taylor of Merlin; and three brothers, Randy Shier of Tacoma, Wash., and Richard "Rick" and Milo Shier, both of Grants Pass. His mother, Charlotte Ann "Charlie" Widman, died as a result of the same boating accident. |

Born in Flesherton, Ontario, Ed was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He took great enjoyment in watching hockey, both professional and his grandsons at the local rink. He had immense pride in his son, Constable Shier of the Sherwood Park RCMP. Ed, Sharon and family moved from Mississauga to Alberta in 1985. He worked road construction initially, building the highway south into Longview. Shortly after that he began a twenty-plus year career as a letter carrier with Canada Post. He was a devious prankster and loved a good joke. While in Ontario, his weekends were spent volunteering as a driver in stock car races. More recently he was a volunteer with the Foothills Search and Rescue, and the Turner Valley Fire Department. Daughter Shannon and husband Tom continue as volunteers for the Longview Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Foothills Firefighters Association, PO Box 11, Black Diamond, AB T0L 0H0. Milit-Beg* | Wallace Manzer Shier began military service on 29 December 1915 in Windsor, Essex County, Ontario, Canada, was enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment prior to the United States entering the Great War. Service No. 207240 Wallace Manzer Shier 1879 – 1916 By Jeffrey Wayne Shier On December 29, 1915 a slender, 5 foot, 7 inch, 36 year old, single American from Ypsilanti Michigan walked into a recruiting station in Windsor, Ontario Canada to join the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and fight in the War to End All Wars (1). His name is Wallace Manzer Shier but due to a transcription error at the time of his death his grave and documentation of his death will forever read Wallace Manner Shier (2). Wallace was born June 27, 1879. His mother Mary C Manzer Shier was 35 years old at the time of the event. His brother Wayne Clark was also at the birth, by a matter of minutes. Mary and George William Shier where married in Ypsilanti, Michigan on October 14 1874. George ran a grocery store with his brother Frank Tice Shier in Detroit Michigan until his death reportedly by his own hand; do to a dose of poison. Mary died of pneumonia brought on by chronic bronchitis on February 3rd 1905. Wallace and Wayne were the only children of George and Mary. At the time of his enlistment Wallace was a tailor living with his brother at 333 Harrington St. in the Delray section of Detroit, Michigan. Wallace had been in the Michigan National Guard for four and a half years before volunteering for this adventure (1). The brothers were raised in the Methodist Church (1) and where considered to be quite the “dandies” as told by Wayne Clark Shier Jr., and that the brothers squandered the family fortune by his wife Erika Shier. After Wallace enlisting in the Canadian Army he was assigned to the 97th Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment (1) known as the American Legion do to the high number of American recruits. He was then shipped off to “Exhibition Camp” just outside of Toronto, Canada. The 97th soon became a force to be reckoned with in competitions with other Canadian units (6). In June of 1916 the unit was sent to Camp Aldershot near Halifax, Nova Scotia for advanced trench training. In September of that year the 97th sailed to England. Do to a series of unfortunate events on the way, consisting of desertions and unfounded embezzlement charges; the unit was tagged with the nickname of the “Lost Legion”. When the 97th arrived at Otter Pool Camp, near Shorncliffe, Kent, England, the once proud American Legion was broken up and its men used for replacement of casualties at the front (6). Private Wallace Manzer Shier, regimental number 207240 “Died in war of unknown causes” on December 23, 1916 and is buried in plot IV row A site 9 Ecoivres Military Cemetery (1) under the name of Wallace Manner Shier. According to the Toronto Star, January 22, 1917: “Two members of the 97th Battalion (American Legion) figure in to-day’s casualty lists. Pte. Wallace Shier, whose relatives are in Detroit, Mich., has been killed in action, while Pte. C. Bow of Columbus, Ohio has been wounded. Both men were at the Exhibition Camp before going overseas. Major Willets proceeded to Boulogne for C.O.’s (Commanding Officer) conference, Capt. Willoughby in command of Regt. Church parade in Concert Hut., Capt. The Rev. Cameron preached on this occasion. M.G.’s, Bombers and Transport made up to full strength. 18 Dec. 1916: Frosty – Cold. G.O.C. 7th. Can. Inf. Bde’s inspection of the Regt. In Div. Reserve. Lieut. C. G. B.Thompson in command of the Reg’t. Capt. Willoughby President of F.G.C.M. Lieut. Gray reported as reinforcement this date. 19 Dec. 1916 – Cloudy – Cold – Snow. Relieved 49th. Bn. from Mt. St. Eloy. Left HUTS at 3.30 P.M. Band and played Reg’t. out as far as Rear Bde. Hdqrs. Relief complete 8:35 P.M. 20 Dec. 1916 – Clear – hard frost. 8th Bde. Put on an attack on one Bn. frontage. A barrage was effected on enemy front line opposite LITCHFIELD and WATLING CRATERS. It consisted of HEAVY and LIGHT Artillery and the 4” STOKES put on a smoke barrage in same vicinity. The object of this barrage was to deceive enemy as to where attack was to be made. The assault was very successful. 2 officers and 56 C.R. taken prisoners. Our casualties O. R. killed, 18 O. R. Wounded all of which were evacuated. Very little retaliation on part of the enemy. Lieut. Blott reported as reinforcement this date. 21 Dec. 1916 – Clear – Hard frost. Minnenwerfer and aerial torpedo activity in vicinity of ROSS STREET. 22 Dec. 1916 - Weather breaking. Showery. Situation quiet. Pte. McFeat killed while on patrol on right of CHASSERY CRATER. 23 Dec. 1916 – Wet – trenches falling in. Miners report every mine between DEVON and ALBANY and 60 feet South of Junction of DEVON SAP and OBSERVATION LINE. All posts withdrawn within 200 feet radius. Consolidating and counter-attack parties held in readiness on both flanks. The following promotions came through this date in D.R.O. To be Majors: Capt. A. E. WILLOUGHBY, Capt. W. M. LOGAN. To be Captains:- Lieut. D. E. MUNN, Lieut. C. G. B. Thompson, Lieut. J. S. WOODS. No 207240 Pte. Shier killed in action while wiring. No. 261530 Pte. Jones W. H. wounded in action. (G.S. left foot) between DEVON and ALBANY Craters. 24 Dec. 1916 – Windy and Showery. Relieved by 49th Battn. Regiment moved to Bde. Reserve. 25 Dec. 1916 – Cool and clear. Absolutely quiet until 11 PM. when an intense bombardment was heard on left of Brigade sector. |
