| Death* | Elizabeth Jane Rowntree died on 12 August 1907; The death of Mrs. John Shire, wife of the late John Shire, one of the early residents of this city, took place about 7:30 o'clock on Monday morning. She had been in poor health for a couple of years and for a month or two her condition had been so bad that her recovery was considered very doubtful, She had just passed her 68th birthday. The Shire family came to Petosky in 1875, and they soon became one of the best known families here for their kindness of heart and readiness to help the early settlers, many of whom were very poor. Mrs. Shire was especiallly liked and respected and her generous disposition never allowed anyone who came to her for help to go away empty handed. The name of John Shire headed the first subscription list for the Bay View with a very liberal amount for the people here in those days. She is survived by six children, four daughters, Mrs. George Craw, Petoskey; Mrs Fred Lovell, Pellston; Mrs. E. R. Payton and Mrs. Wm. L. Fevor, Chicago; and 3 sons, John and Will Shire, Detroit and George of this city. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Craw, on Woodland avenue, Rev. Bedford-Jones officiating. The interment was in beautiful Greenwood, beside the husband who preceded her to the other side five years ago. |
