She was the daughter of Angus Hill and Laura Ann Vollmer. | |
Married Name | As of 18 September 1935,her married name was Bergsma. |
Marriage* | Cordelia Hill married David William Bergsma, son of John D. Bergsma and Mary Jane Johnson, on 18 September 1935 in Sault Ste Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan, United States. |
Death* | Cordelia Hill died on 30 June 2005 at age 93; Cordelia "Della" Maier of Traverse City was a former resident of Dafter, Mackinac Island, Rudyard, and Winter Haven, Florida, who formerly taught the children of the Neebish Island Lighthouse keeper. Mrs. Maier was 93 when she died Thursday, June 30, 2005. She was born October 23, 1911 on the family farm in Dafter, the youngest of seven children of Angus and Laura Ann (nee Vollmer) Hill. She attended the one-room schoolhouses near the farm and, as was common in those years, she completed more than one grade at a time. In 1928, at the age of 16, she was graduated from Sault High School with honors. She spent one year at the County Normal School and was certified to teach elementary school. She was still not the required 18 years of age to teach in public school, so her first teaching job was for the government, teaching on Neebish Island. The following year, she began teaching for Rudyard Township Schools and for the next few years she taught kindergarten through eighth grade in one-room school houses, including the Fractional and Dryburg schools. During this time, she met Dave Bergsma. They were married in 1935 and moved to Mackinac Island. While living on Mackinac Island, the couple had two children, Lorna and David. In 1942, they returned to farming in Rudyard and Mrs. Maier returned to teaching in the Rudyard school district, first at Carolina School and then in the Town School. During this time, she took night and summer school classes and, in 1960, she was graduated cum laude from Northern Michigan University in Marquette. Mr. Bergsma died in 1969 after 33 years of marriage. In the fall of 1970, she married Noble Graham, who had been her classmate in the one- room schoolhouse of Dafter Township. Known in the classroom first as "Miss Hill," then "Mrs. Bergsma," and then "Mrs. Graham," she retired in 1971, after 34 years of teaching. While she was married to Mr. Graham, she joined the families of Kenny, Charles, and Donald Graham and their children. Noble Graham died in 1975. In her retirement, Mrs. Maier spent winters in Winter Haven, Florida. There she met Albert Maier, whom she married in 1976. They were married almost 23 years before Mr. Maier's death in 1999. Mrs. Maier always helped on the farm, was a 4-H leader, Parent Teacher Association president, first president of the newly formed Rudyard Education Association, an elder of the Rudyard Presbyterian Church, and a Grange member. She served on the Chippewa County 4-H Council, was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, and several square dance clubs in Michigan and Florida. She was the oldest and longest member of the Rudyard Presbyterian Church. She also was politically active on behalf of educators, both in Michigan and Florida. Mrs. Maier enjoyed oil painting, needlework, reading, crossword puzzles, playing in a kitchen band, and poetry. She and Mr. Maier were avid square dancers and they danced in Michigan, Florida, Canada, Europe, and on cruise ships. She is survived by her daughter and her family, Lorna and George Lombard of Traverse City; a son and his family, David and Ida Bergsma of Brighton; five grandchildren, Lynne Lombard, Janet Lombard McGee, Brent Bergsma, Nicole Bergsma Charder, and Jennifer Bergsma Gross; five great-grandchildren, Shealyn and Ryan McGee, Jessica and Corbin Charder, and Haileigh Gross. She is also survived by the extended families of Kenneth, Charles, and Donald Graham, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Maier was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Alex, Elmer, and Greeley Hill; three sisters, Minnie Hill, Adaline Jones, and Abigail Quintero; her husbands, Dave Bergsma, Noble Graham, and Albert Maier; several nieces and nephews, and Charles Graham. The family was assisted by Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford. Services were Tuesday, July 5, at the funeral home in Pickford with the Reverend Rod Case officiating. Burial was in the Bergsma family plot in the Kinross Cemetery. |

Death* | He died on 29 May 1916 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States, at age 77; Railroad Pioneer. Born in Ontario, Canada, he was the chief railroad executive responsible for establishing the Great Northern Railway lines which served the upper Midwest, the northern Great Plains and Pacific Northwest of America. In 1873, as a steamboat shipping businessman in Minnesota, he saw the need to expand railways to the western territories. Between 1883 and 1889, he built his Great Northern Railway lines all the way across north America, the Great Plains, the Rockies to Seatle Washington. Under his management, he helped homesteads to immigrants by importing grains, farm equipment, bulding materials and general products which brought industry to Western Amercia. By the time of his death he held the monopoly of the railroad business in the U.S. with the Great Northern Railway having lines in Texas, Colorado, California and Washington at a worth of more than $53 million. He died in St. Paul, Minnesota, at age 77. |
Fact 1* | From the Rock Island Argus, May 29, 1916. From Farmer Boy He Became One of Wealthiest and Greatest Men. --- St. Paul, May 29. -- James J. Hill, railroad builder, capitalist and most widely known figure of the northwest, died at his Summitt avenue residence at 9:30 o'clock this morning as the result of an infection due to bowel trouble. --- Mr. Hill was unconscious for nearly 12 hours before he died. Dr. Herman M. Biggs and Dr. Stanley Seager of the Mayo staff, together with members of the immediate Hill family, were at the bedside when the end came. Mr. Hill's personal secretary, M.R. Brown, made the announcement of his distinguished employer's demise to waiting newspaper correspondents at the Hill residence. His statement was made verbally, with the intimation that a written bulletin might be issued later. Questioned regarding a date for obsequies, Mr. Brown said that no arrangements had been discussed. The secretary appeared greatly affected and declined to talk further than to make the bare announcement of the death. The probable value of James J. Hill's estate is estimated at between $200,000,000 and $250,000,000. The great financial power held by Mr. Hill will pass to his son, Louis, who had been closely associated with him in business for 10 years. --- The aged financier failed rapidly during the night. All members of his family were at the bedside with the exception of Mrs. M. Beard of New York, a daughter. She is expected to arrive tonight. James N. Hill of New York and Mrs. Samuel Hill of Washington arrived early in the morning. Louis W. Hill was up at 7 a.m. "My father slept most of the night," he said. Other members of the family were up early. George T. Slade, son-in-law; M.R. Brown, private secretary, and G.A. and M. MacPherson appeared on the lawn soon after daylight, but refused to talk. M.R. Brown met the newspaper reporters at 9:43 o'clock. "Mr. Hill died quietly at 9:30," he said with tears in his eyes. The bulletin was signed by Herman M. Biggs. The last letter sent to Mr. Hill was received five minutes after he died. It was from United States Senator Sanborn and was sent by a special messenger. It was received at 9:35. Little Sisters Extend Sympathy. Just as Mr. Hill was dying two Little Sisters of the Poor approached the house from the south driveway. They were met at the door and extended their sympathy. Then they left. One of the first to leave the house was John J. Toomey, Mr. Hill's confidential business agent and associate for years. He was quickly followed by Ralph Budd, assistant to Louis Hill, president of the Great Northern railroad and one of the younger members of Mr. Hill's railroad family. L.W. Hill was next to leave the house. He walked between Rev. Thomas J. Gibbons, vicar general of the St. Paul archdiocese, and George MacPherson, intimate friend of the family. All three went to the L.W. Hill residence. At this juncture Dr. Emil Boeckmann's car drove up with Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Hill and Mrs. Louis Hill. James J. Hill discovered "the breadbasket of the world" in the great northwest; he led in its development from a wilderness into what now comprises six wealthy states dotted with 400,000 farms; and he blazed a trail for transportation which reached eventually from Buffalo to Asia, with a total mileage of rail and steamship facilities that would nearly girdle the earth. That but roughly spans the story of his achievement. Near Guelph, in Ontario, where James Jerome Hill was born in 1838, the son of an Irish-Canadian farmer who died when the boy was 15, there stands a tree stump labeled: "The last tree chopped by James J. Hill." It marked the lad's resolution to go to the United States. He had been prompted by an odd incident. According to the story that is told, a strange traveler had stopped at the Hill farm to take dinner, and left his horse at the gate. Young Hill saw the animal was tired and he carried it a pail of water. The stranger was pleased with the lad's thoughtfulness, and as he drove off he tossed him a newspaper from the United States, and called out gravely: "Go there, young man. That country needs youngsters of your spirit." Hill read the paper carefully. It contained glowing accounts of opportunities in the States. He resolved to investigate for himself. It was the next morning that he chopped his last tree. As a mere roustabout lad of 18, he toured from Maine to Minnesota. When, in 1856, he disembarked from a Mississippi river packet at St. Paul that place was a frontier town of 5,000 inhabitants. At the sign of W.J. Bass & Co., agents for the Dubuque & St. Paul Packet company, he found a job as both stevedore and clerk. Seized Opportunities. In the 15 years that followed he seized every opportunity to study the whole problem of river transportation. He gathered no end of experience and a little capital with which he launched his own firm of Hill, Griss & Co., which promptly displayed its initiative by bringing the first load of coal that had ever been seen in that section into St. Paul. Two years later, with a flat-bottomed steamer he established the first regular communication with St. Paul and the Manitoba ports of the fertile Red river valley. At about that time St. Paul was having its first experiment in railroad building. Eighty miles had been laid to St. Cloud, 316 miles to Breckenridge, both of which terminals were at the southern end of the Red river valley, and there were about 100 miles of track "which began nowhere and ended in that same indefinite spot." This venture ran up a debt of $33,000,000 and collapsed, with its only assets being "a few streaks of rust and a right of way." Hill had had sufficient success in the region to be seized with a consuming desire to purchase the defunct property. After five years of financial dickering, including the sale of all his other interests, which netted a fortune of $100,000, he and a syndicate of three others -- Sir Donald A. Smith, George Stephen and Norman W. Kittson, -- obtained the object of this desire. Made Head of "Manitoba." The St. Paul, Minnesota and Manitoba railroad was formed to operate the property, with Hill as general manager. When in 1883 Mr. Hill was elected president he undertook the extension of the road from its Dakota and Minnesota homestead to the Pacific ocean. He was confronted by three great competitors to the south, each of which had received big bonuses as government aid, whereas the "Manitoba" or the Great Northern, as it came to be known, did not have a dollar of government subsidy or an acre of grant to forward its progress from the Minnesota boundary to the sea. In this light, Hill's plan was widely deemed pure folly, but he pressed it to conclusion by building and populating as he built. For several years he laid rails westward at the rate of a mile a day, and at a cost of $30,000 a mile, and as he went he left a trail of embryonic farms by the railside. With the line to Puget Sound once laid, he turned empire builder. He introduced the live stock industry into vast areas of bunch-grass plains, and developed them by importing blooded stock; he sent demonstration trains through the country with men who showed the people how to raise more wheat to the acre; he made an outlet for the grain by establishing a cheap rate by rail and steamship to Buffalo where he built great elevators; in fact for upwards of 20 years he left nothing in his power undone to develop the country where he had staked out his claim as the great common carrier. But at the Pacific tide-water he was not satisfied for he saw in the orient still further opportunities. He organized a fleet of Pacific steamships for the commercial invasion of Japan and China. Japan at the time wanted steel rails, but proposed getting them from England, as the rates were less. It is related that when John W. Gates, the steel magnate of Chicago, came to Hill with the proposition of getting American rails to Japan, the latter replied: "I will make you a rate of $8 a ton from Chicago or Pittsburgh to Yokohama. If that is too much, I will carry it for the axle grease used on the locomotives and freight cars; and if you can't stand that, I will carry your freight for nothing." At the $8 rate named, the American manufacturer was enabled to secure the Japanese contract. The same tactics were adopted in getting American wheat and flour into Japan and China, where rice was the staple food. His faith in the far east was rewarded as liberally as that in the northwest. It is estimated that the Pacific fleet now carries nearly $50,000,000 worth of products to the orient every year. While Mr. Hill built up for himself and his associates an immense fortune, he also helped to create for the settlers along his lines a wealth of over $5,000,000,000 in real property, which is represented by the value of the 400,000 farms and their 65,000,000 acres of improved land. Retires From Active Business. Upon his retirement at 69, the "streak of rust" he had bought 30 years before, had expanded to more than 6,000 miles and it was earning gross profits of more than $66,000,000 a year, and carrying 15,000,000 tons of freight annually. He still retained a hand in the Great Northern's policy as chairman of the board of directors, while his son Louis, who had worked up from the humblest position of his father's railroad became president. The secret of the Hill success was no secret at all, according to Mr. Hill, and he had no new recipes to offer. "The man with the big opportunity today," he said, "is the man in the ranks." But the secret of failure he frequently declared to be extravagance. He regarded this as a national tendency, against which he strongly set himself, particularly as concerned the natural resources. During his active supervision of the Great Northern system, Mr. Hill oversaw almost every detail, to the wonder of all employees with whom he came in contact. A fugitive instance of his recognition in his own country is the story of a tourist who declares that there are afloat in the Swedish section of the northwest upwards of 10,000 different stories in Swedish dialect with "Yem Hell" as the centerpiece. Patrons of his lines have liked and disliked him in rapid alternation, for it was his point to have his way, not only where his road should run, but where his patrons should settle. This was part of his economic policy. He carried out a singular regularity in the location of branch lines, giving a minimum of short lines on which light trains were unavoidable. The principal text of his railway gospel was low grades, heavy power, large capacity cars, and big train loads on his main lines, and he began to preach this at a time when these things were held as visionary by most railway men. In contact with the late E.H. Harriman, who outdid him in the extent of railway ownership, Mr. Hill was not only the financial head, but the practical head, of his great railway system. He was the chief promotor and president of the Northern Securities company, organized with a purpose to bring the Northern Pacific and Great Northern under one ownership, to which such opposition developed that a suit was brought in the United States circuit court, which decided that the acquisition was an illegal combination -- affirmed in March, 1904, by the United States supreme court. Evidences of His Work Shown. For several years James J. Hill had been in the habit of insisting both to his friends and to the public that he was not actively engaged in business. Just how active he was during the last two years of his life can be judged only by little evidences of his master hand in matters affecting the Great Northern railroad and the First National bank of St. Paul and by three outstanding accomplishments in which his will and genius asserted themselves. From a world viewpoint it would be hard to say whether his staunch support of the Belgian people following the invasion of the Germans, or the part played in the negotiations for the $500,000,000 loan to the allied governments is the more important. From a local viewpoint his influence in the upbuilding of the South St. Paul stockyards claims first rank. Sent Aid to Belgians. From the time the work of succoring the Belgians began Mr. Hill took a leading part in the movement. It probably will never be known how much money he sent to King Albert, an old personal friend, and how much he induced others to send. His place as an international figure was never more prominently displayed than when the representatives of the allies came to New York in quest of a huge loan. One of the first men to be sent for by J.P. Morgan was Mr. Hill and his assurance that he and the people of the northwest were prepared to do their share in taking up the foreign bonds is believed to have contributed largely to the success of the negotiations. His claim to being the original advocate of live stock development in the northwest is unquestioned and since the retirement of A.B. Stickney he has been the most ardent proponent of the upbuilding of the industry at at this center, a work which has been taken up enthusiastically by his son, Louis W. Hill. |
