Mrs. Skae Suicides, Widow of Canadian Pacific Railway Official takes Carbolic Acid
NewYork-Mrs Alice Skae, 60 years of age, widow of John Skae, one time official of Canadian Pacific Railway, committed suicide in an hotel here to-day by drinking Carbolic Acid. Mrs Skae, whose home was at Oshawa, Ont. had resided here two years. She had been attended by a trained nurse for several months.
New York Times, July 7, 1903
Widow of Canadian Pacific Official Kills Herself in Hotel Touraine.
Mrs. Alice W. Skae, widow of John Skae, at one time an official of the Canadian Pacific Railraod, commited suicide in her apartments at the Hotel Touraine, 9 East Thirty-ninth Street, yesterday morning by drinking carbolic acid.
Mrs. Akae had for some time suffered from insomnia and for six weeks had been in the care of a trained nurse.
About six weeks ago, while in Atlantic City, she had, it is said, attempted to take her life with carbolic acid. Since that time Mrs. Skae had appeared to be more rational.
According to Dr. J. N. Bishop of 12 West Thirty-eighth Street, Mrs. Skae was watched by the nurse until last Monday night when she retired. At 8:30 yesterday morning when the nurse went to rouse her, she detected the odor of carbolic acid. She at once telephoned Dr. Bishop, who, upon his arrival, found that Mrs. Skae had been dead about an hour. A glass was found on a table containing a small quantity of the acid. No letter or note of explanation was to be found.
