Fact 1 | The following poem was sent to the Editor of the Calgary News-Telegram shortly after the death of Lester Olny Webster: To the Editor, of The News-Telegram: Sir, -- From a little persuasion of some of the boys of the 50th, I enclose this rather illiterate poem to you, to show you to some extent what we think of one of our best officers, a Calgary man; who by ill luck was one of the first to "fall" amongst us. However poor in verse it is; I dedicate my feeble attempt to those relatives near and dear to him, who are left to mourn their loss. Respectfully yours, "ONE OF THE BOYS", Lance-Corp. F. W. Daglish, 425181, A Company, 50 Battalion IN MEMORIAM Major L. O. Webster, killed August 19, 1916. We know him, but not as others knew him, To us he was a Guiding Star, a Leader of men One who gathers all others unto him, From afar we came. To know him, and to worship him, as one Born to be a Leader, and a man of fame, He knew his work, a masterpiece of vim and energy. A man amongst the men, A leader with a warrior's design; He went with us there -- leaving Kith and kin, and took his place amongst the men to lead us From our weakness, into his firm embrace; He was the trusted, we were his trust, But fate, who holds in store All that we would embrace, and yet again deplore, Then thought it o'er To call in his manly power And so before our eyes He died; as a flower broken down before it bloomed Withering in the sunlight of the day, And so did he, with war equipment groomed, Moving amongst his men Thus pass away. The eye was moist, and the heart was sad And our spirit began to fail His life was gone, it was all we had To strengthen the weak and the frail We rose from our tears, strengthened in will, To carry his work right on, With hearts more brave, for his spirit still, Impels us to fight against wrong. His courage and faith is with us yet, And shall never more decline His aim, ours too, the method he set, Is our purpose and our design. We shall come back home, and see him there, But not with the natural eye, He'll take the lead on his chestnut mare For our major shall never die. -- Fred W. Daglish. |
