Death*Katherine Eleanor Murray died on 10 November 2023 in Anson General Hospital, Iroquois Falls, District of Cochrane, Ontario, Canada, at age 73; With heavy hearts and deepest sorrow, the family of Katherine Devins (nee Murray) announce her peaceful passing at Anson General Hospital in Iroquois Falls, Ontario on Friday, November 10th, 2023. She was 73 years young. Kathy will always be loved and remembered by her caring husband John Devins, her precious daughter Melanie and her devoted son-in-law Tim Shields. She adored her three beautiful grandchildren Tré, Xavier and Kalora Shields who will cherish their many memories of grandma.

She was loved by her late brother-in-law Gordon Redican and leaves behind her baby sister Carolyn Redican. She loved her nephews Colin Redican (Chandra) Peter Redican (Rebecca), and Stephen Redican and great nephews Ben Hatton, Nathanael, and Michael Redican. Katherine was loved by her sister-in-law Victoria Harvey and her sons Jefferey Freeman and Duane Brown (nephews)

Grandma D is also dearly remembered by the many Stage Stars and Step’NSound Dancers past and present. Her church families, Trinity United and Northern Lights Baptist are both grieving, but also rejoicing that she is home with her Lord. Welcoming her in God’s Kingdom are many deceased friends, and family members including aunts, uncles, grandparents, and her parents, Kathleen Taylor and Garnet Murray.

She also has many close friends and colleagues that mourn her passing including her University Gal Pals, the Bricker Girls. Mrs. Devins was an amazing teacher, devoting 40 years of her life to Iroquois Falls Secondary School. She will be surely missed by the many administrators, staff and students who crossed paths with her in the hallways or sat captivatingly in her creative classrooms. Her love for learning and literature was second to none and her legacy lives on in those who knew her. She was a lady with a heart of gold and a matriarch to be admired and cherished. Rest in peace “Hun”, “Mommy” and “Grandma.”

Visitations will be held at Irvine & Irvine Funeral Home, 641 deTroyes Avenue, Iroquois Falls on Tuesday November 14th, 2023 from 2 to 4 pm & 6 to 8 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at the Trinity United Church, Devonshire Avenue, Iroquois Falls on Wednesday November 15th, 2023 at 3:30 pm. The interment will take place in the spring at the Abitibi Cemetery in Iroquois Falls.

Donations can be made in her honour to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Anson General Palliative Care Room.

She loved all her caregivers, doctors and nurses so very much. Thank you.

Margaret Atwood once said “In the end, we will all become stories” Well do I ever have a bittersweet one for you today, a story filled with laughter and tears, lessons and fears, a tale for the generations.
What do you say about the greatest person you’ve ever known? How do you speak to do her justice?
Eleanor Catherine Joan Murray was born in Lindsay, Ontario on April 29th 1950, to Garnet Murray, a local farmer and his wife, Kathleen Taylor Murray, a teacher. Catherine grew up as a farm girl and enjoyed selling eggs on the weekend in addition to watching her sister master tractor driving. Mom always told me her little sister was more adventurous. Education, dance, piano and voice lessons for all part of the sister’ upbringing. Being a farm girl at LCVI, Lindsay Collegiate Vocational Institute, was a challenge. It wasn’t very popular to be a farmer and the sisters were given the nicknames Ripper and Snorter; we aren’t sure who is who to this day. After high school, the fun began for mom as she attended Wilfrid Laurier. At University Kathy blossomed into a popular, beautiful fun-loving young lady. Mom had a few roommates come and go, but life changed forever when she moved into 43 Bricker Ave with 11 girls. The entire house was transformed, and the girls made the living quarters into bedrooms. A dinner schedule was made up to ensure that kitchen wasn’t crowded. Imagine 11 university girls and one bathroom. The besties even had special T shirts made and still today, have an email chain where they discuss life, reminisce about memories, cry about challenges, and boast about kids and grandkids. It’s so beautiful to see. As a child I remember their yearly summer parties I can still hear the laughter, smell the BBQ, and the picture, the love.
After Catherine’s first year of university was over, she attended a summer dance in Orillia and met a tall dark, handsome man who changed her life forever After that night, no one else compared. Mom and dad dated for three years and after she earned her BA, they married on August 26th 1972. The young couple moved to Burlington and mom attended teachers’ college while dad worked in a Toronto factory. When Kathy finished her B. ED she was offered a job in Iroquois Falls, Ontario and dad got a job at the paper mill. The rest is history as they say. Even though Mom was a southern girl, she made the North her home and had no desire to leave. She taught 40 years and loved her career so very much.

However, her greatest love was her family. In 1980, after eight years of marriage, Kathy and John got pregnant and were expecting a baby. Due to high blood pressure Mom was labelled a high-risk pregnancy and was hospitalized for three months prior to the delivery, but luckily all went well, and I was born without complication. For this reason, I am an only child, but sure would love to have some siblings for moments like today. Thank God for friends and extended family! Growing up my mom was a helicopter parent and bubble wrapped me. To prove it I got my first skinned knee when I was 19 years old. I fell leaving my telemarketing job which was out of her control. I cried like a baby. However, being her “favorite daughter” which was our little joke since I was her only daughter, I think I made up for the fact that she could only have one by surprising her with a teenage pregnancy. A lot of parents would not have been as understanding and supportive as she, but my parents were amazing. My mom’s first comment, when told about the unplanned baby was,” if 4 adults can’t raise a child there’s something wrong”. That’s the type of woman my mom was. Her comment wasn’t just an empty promise. She followed through. Tre grew up to be a wonderfully successful man to the commitment of four adults working together to raise him Not only did she help with baby Tre, but she also helped us with school work and extracurricular activities, insisting that Tim and I stayed true to ourselves and continue to enjoy our youth. After graduation, Tim, Tre and I moved to North Bay to attend post-secondary institutions and Mom was always one call away. While away, I missed home so much, Tim would drive me back on the weekends. Good thing I picked Nipissing University. Being this close to my mother, and I don’t mean geographically, would often make me susceptible to teasing. My mom attended not only my grad but also my prom and yes, I invited her. She was fun to be around and as Aerosmith puts it “I didn’t want to miss a thing”. It might be sad to admit, but I did sometimes live, imagining the time I’d lose her, and that directly influenced the time I spent with her. I have no regrets about that invested time for those moments are so precious and priceless today.
Speaking of time, it kept moving along and I attended teachers’ college to follow in my mom’s footsteps. She was such an amazing educator and I couldn’t wait to be like her; she was my idol. I was able to secure a placement in Iroquois Falls which allowed me to move home. I loved working at the same school as my mom. We were able to have early morning panic to get to school on time, followed by much more enjoyable lunches and after school Young and The Restless viewing sessions. Tim proposed to me that year and mom came to watch Tre as the limo pulled up to surprise me for a night on the town.
Mom was an amazing party planner and threw me a breathtakingly beautiful bridal shower. While she worked diligently at the little things, she encouraged my nanny, Diane Kinney, to have her moment to be the mother figure of the day. My mom was selfless like that. She shared her motherly role with Diane Kinney and while many women wouldn’t be able to deal with this, she handled it with grace and humility.
During the wedding time, mom had some health issues and didn’t want to cause me pain or delay anything, so she was very strong and put it off until after the wedding. I was concerned about all of that, but she insisted. She wore a smile, and loved every minute of it regardless of what was on her mind.
Later on, Tim and I decided to have more babies and 18 months later I was pregnant of my second son, Xavier. Mom was completely overjoyed at the prospect of having more grandchildren. Not long after Xavior’s birth, came our baby girl, Kalora.
Mum was deleted to have three grandchildren, a daughter and a son in law. She often thanked us and bragged about getting three grandchildren from one child. She wasn’t a baking Grandma or a play cards with you kind of gal, but she could help you with homework, cook a mean tuna casserole, or beeferoni, and cheer you on at any event including dance scholarships, music festivals, dance comps, Provincial Public Speaking Championships, academic accolades, and pageants just to name a few and we made sure she has many to attend!
Grandma D as the Stage Stars called her was the best cheerleader ever. She not only cheered on her own flesh and blood, but the entire team, our dance family. You could often find her at the grocery stores selling raffle tickets to fundraise for the team. She loved each and every one of them and felt the same about her school students. She just loved being a part of people’s lives and truly wanting everyone to reach his or her full potential. How many people root for others? Not as many as there should be
Well, the story gets sad from here on out and Mom told me the end of her tale isn’t what she expected for herself. First of all, she truly craved longevity and felt at a stage 4 diagnosis at the age of 69 was just beyond devastating. When we heard the news, she and I literally lay in bed for two days just cuddling and crying with each other. It was terrible and wonderful all at once. Then the fight began and mom’s strength of character was truly put to the test which she passed with flying colours. Even though she had her moments, the fact that she could enjoy a night out, wear a chemo bag around her neck and still smile was a triumph in itself. Not only was Kathy Devlin loved by her family, friends and students back home she quickly became a favorite patient in the chemo room at the Sudbury Cancer Centre. She would tell me all about the lives of the nurses, engagements, upcoming weddings, new houses, etc. While getting treatments, she didn’t wallow in self pity, but instead got to know the nurses, the volunteers and the doctors. She was even called a VIP patient by her surgeon who told us she adored our mother-daughter bond and hoped the same for her own new baby girl. Mom was loved by everyone that met her. Once her chemical treatments were finished, she purchased a Tim Horton’s gift card for every single nurse in the Chemo Wing and presented them on her last day there. The nurses were flabbergasted and couldn’t believe the kindness and selflessness. They had clearly never been treated like that before. They also told me that my mom loved her husband, daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren very much and had so many interesting stories to tell about them. Although the chemo did work, and they were able to shrink the mass enough to operate, time was bought but, no care was found. She fought hard and well. People talk about losing or winning the C battle but to me, all fighters win. Mom won because although she’s gone, she never lost her joie de vivre and that’s what is most important.
As I was struggling to complete this tribute a close friend told me that if I were to capture how much I loved my mom and tell all the tales I needed to, I would detain the audience for days. You would all need to set up camp! And for those of you who know me I don’t do camping.
Dad, I’m so sorry you lost the love of your life. I thank you for taking such good care of my mom in her last days.
Tim, thank you for taking my mom to all her chemo appointments and being so fun loving with her. Thanks for being the son she never had.
Tre, thank you for being her pride and joy, beside me. She is so very proud of your public speaking, your dancing, your acting and your knighting.
Xavier, grandma adored your musical talents and academic accolades. She was also impressed with your lifeguarding skills. She loved to listen to you tickle the ivories.
Kalora, her beauty. Grandma adored your voice and your dancing feet. She was also so proud you plan to be an elementary school teacher like her mother.
Mom, I adore you. You are my best friend, my life teacher. I am blessed and honoured to be your one and only forever and I love you so so much.

Death*Gloria Mildred Muzyka died on 3 August 2012 in Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, at age 90; MCINTOSH, Gloria Mildred (nee Muzyka) died peacefully at the Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore in Calgary, on the 3rd day of August, 2012 at 90 years of age. She was the beloved wife of Dr. Homer E. McIntosh, who predeceased her in 1997. She was the loving mother of Mary Lynne Hamilton (Douglas) and Rick (Marianne), and the cherished grandmother of Jeff and Karen. She was a devoted aunt to and will be fondly remembered by her eleven nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sister Nadie Snyder (the late Herb). Gloria was born on February 18, 1922 in Czabariwka, a small village in the Ukraine, the first of two daughters for Fred and Maria Muzyka. Her sister, Nadie, was born in 1925. In 1926, her father immigrated to Canada and Gloria, her sister and their mother followed in 1928. The family settled in Vegreville, Alberta. After graduating from high school in 1940, Gloria moved east to attend the Dental Nursing School at the University of Toronto. There she met Homer, who was also at the University of Toronto in third-year dentistry. They were married in 1945 and moved to South Porcupine, Ontario, Homer's hometown. While living there their two children were born: Mary Lynne in 1950 and Rick in 1954. While Homer undertook two years of post graduation training in oral surgery in Washington D.C. the family lived there for those two years. They then moved to Ottawa, where they lived for the next forty years. Gloria and Homer moved to Calgary in 1996. While living in Ottawa, Gloria resumed her education, indulging her lifelong enjoyment of learning. She attended Carleton University and completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Russian and Sociology. For many years thereafter, she continued to enjoy auditing courses in children's literature, short stories, Canadian literature and history, anthropology and mythology. Gloria was an active volunteer with the United Church Women's association at Rideau Park United Church, and at the Ottawa Children's Aid Society, the May Court, the CNIB and a local library. She also taught Sunday school for several years. Gloria and her husband loved and enjoyed many years of curling, first in South Porcupine and then in Ottawa at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. They also enjoyed square dancing and frequently attended the regular Saturday night dinner dances at the Hunt Club. Gloria had a gentle and loving manner, and was always gracious and generous. She had a good sense of humour and loved to laugh; she taught and led by example; she was happy and optimistic and truly believed that the glass was always half full. She will be sorely missed by her family, her friends and all those whose lives she touched along the way. The family gives special thanks to Ria Alles, Gloria's loving and devoted caregiver of almost ten years. The family also gives sincere thanks to the staff of the Chaparral Unit of the Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore for the compassion shown to Gloria and to her family over the years and especially in the last few months of Gloria's life. Visitation will be held at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa on Friday, August 10, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the Funeral Service in the Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Following the funeral service there will be a private burial, after which the family will rejoin the gathering for a reception at Pinecrest. Death*David Anthony Nadeau died on 28 July 2015 in Guelph, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada, at age 68; NADEAU, David Anthony September 18, 1946 - July 28, 2015 Married to Gwynneth, whom he cherished as his angel, for almost 45 years. Beloved father of Elecia (Tim) and Michelle. Devoted Papa to Emily and Ryleigh, who were the light of his life. Loving stepson of Kathleen Leitch and brother of Linda (Rupert) and Elizabeth. Step-brother of Judy (Ron, recently deceased), Janet (Peter) and Nancy (Larry). Brother-in-law of Brenda (Bob) and Derek (Kelly), he will be missed by all of his nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, George Nadeau (June 1969) and Mary McKague (June 1970). David was born in Ottawa and raised in Toronto, where he spent much of his life. With his MBA in hand, he and his family went to British Columbia for several years before returning to Ontario and ultimately settling in Guelph. Model railroader extraordinaire, David's hobby connected him and Gwyn to numerous friends around the world. He loved travelling country roads and, to the amazement of his family, he never lost his way as long as he knew where the railroad tracks ran. Lover of golf, especially his annual trips with friends to his favourite golf courses in Ireland and Scotland. He also savoured double chocolate doughnuts, one of his final pleasures in life. His enduring sense of humour stayed with him to the end. At David's request, there will be no visitation or memorial service. A private funeral service will be held with only his immediate family in attendance.
