Fact 1* | The Orillia News Letter, October 17th, 1928- BRIEF BIOGRAPHIES OF PROMINENT CITIZENS- This week the News-Letter presents to its readers the portrait and a brief sketch of one of our oldest citizens, that of Mr. William Teskey, now in his eighty-third year. He was born at Northbrook, the Drinkwater farm, North Orillia, on the 28th of March, 1846. His parents, Joseph Teskey and Mary Ann Shier, settled near Marchmount in 1845, bringing with them his two eldest brothers, Benjamin and Charles, now deceased. When about a year old his parents moved to Medonte, taking up lot 2, concession 13, which was purchased frm Charles Hume, the founder of Marchmont. The Teskey family consisted of seven sons and one daughter. The subject of this article is the third of that family. The family name is of German origin, and is one of over a hundred families who settled in the County of Limerick, Ireland, in the reign of Queen Anne. Other families of this German settlement in Ireland were the Switzers, Shiers, Brethours, Doupes, Dulmages, St. Johns, Lodwicks, LeGeers, etc. These names are well known locally, and whose ancestral home was that part of Germany drained by the River Rhine. Why they left we will leave to the students of history to answer. It was all owing to a famous decree, passed by Henry IV in 1598 and revoked in 1685 by Louis XIV. When about five years old he went to school at Price’s Corners, and his only living classmate is J.B. Price, who resides on the Barrie road, Orillia. Since that time these two have been close personal friends. They hold many things in common. They are both Anglicans, veterans of the Fenian Raid of ‘66, and members of the Orange Association. His first teacher was Miss Wilkinson, then P.H. How. For some years he attended school at Jarratt’s, the most noted teacher there being Dugald McAlpine, who was fluent in Gaelic, a most fortunate thing for many of the pupils, who did not know a word of English.of those Scottish lads became fluent in the English language, such as Dr. John McLean, Dugald McNiven, John Livingston, and others no doubt who reside in Orillia. Mr. Teskey is also pleased to see on the streets Messrs. Patrick Lawlor and Thomas Reid, former class mates and members of other pioneer families of Medonte. The name Medonte is said to be that of a daughter of an Indian chief. In the year of confederation Mr. Teskey obtained his first County teaching certificate, and took charge of Leigh’s Corners school for the year 1867. In the following year he taught at Marchmont. To fit himself better for the profession, he went to the Normal School in 1869. Among the students were some who rose to hign and honorable positions in after years, such as Dr. Jas. L. Hughes and Sir George Ross, Premier of Ontario.returned to Marchmont in 1870 and in January, 1872, came to Orillia and remained intil 1878. In that year he was married to Helen, daughter of the late Thomas Horne, of Oro. She died on the 6th of May, 1927, within a year of their golden wedding. His family consists of three daughters and five sons- Mrs. H.G. Macpherson and Mrs. W.D. MacBride of Whitehorse, Yukon; Mrs. A. McDonald, Vancouver; Garrett, San Francisco; Clifford, Vancouver; Manley and Charles Harold, Cleveland; and Howard, North Bay. From 1878 to 1882 he taught at Coldwater, where he and his family had many friends. In the seventies he took an active part in athletic sports, and in 1873 in company with Thomas Phillips, W.O. Black and James Black, captured all the prizes offered in Cannington at a 24th of May celebration held there. He was also a member of the old fire brigade and the first baseball club, of which Moses Boyd and Andrew Harvie, well known citizens, were members. In the evening of his life Mr. Teskey is comforted by the knowledge of a happy, united family, devoted to their mother, whose memory is a benediction and inspiration.before stated, Mr. Teskey was an all-round athlete in his day, and held the championship for throwing a baseball. It is said by our older citizens that they have seen him throw a ball the distance of a town block. Another exploit was to throw a ball perpendicularly into the air and have it descend exactly to the spot on which he stood when throwing it.later years Mr. Teskey has devoted the greater part of his time to the garden which has grown famous from the fact that he has grown three crops a season from it. The News-Letter found him yesderday garnering in his root crop and preparing the soil for an early start next spring. |
Death* | He died on 28 February 1937 in West Street North, Orillia, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada, at age 90; The Orillia Packet and Times, March 4, 1937- DEATHS- TESKEY- At the residence of his niece, Mrs. Beers, 156 West street, North Orillia, on Sunday, February 28, 1937, William Teskey, husband of the late Ellen Horne, in his 91st year. The funeral took place from the residence of his niece, West street, on Tuesday, March 2, to St. James’s church, where service was held. Interment Orillia. WILLIAM TESKEY- When William Teskey died on Sunday, a man who was known far and wide for his many kindly and splendid qualities passed on to his reward. He was a pioneer and had seen the district grow from the days when settlers were taking up the land, down to its present development. Not only was he a pioneer, but he was a native pioneer, having been born on the Drinkwater farm in the Township of Orillia, on March 28, 1846. With his parents, Joseph Teskey and Mrs. Teskey, whose maiden name was Mary Ann Shier, who both had come from Limerick, Ireland, he moved to the Teskey homestead in Medonte, between Price’s Corner and Warminster. His father had come to Canada about 1841, but Mrs. Teskey had been delayed by sickness and arrived here later. William was the first member of the family to be born in Canada, two brothers, Benjamin and Charles, having been born in Ireland. The other members of the family were John, Annie, who became Mrs. Donald Horne, Joseph and Henry. All had died before William, who was the last of that generation of Teskeys.Teskey walked from the old homestead to the school at Jarratt, and when he had finished his course he taught school at Marchmont. Later he taught at Coldwater, at the school on the Bow property west of the Salvation Army barracks in Orillia, where he taught both in a junior room and as principal of the school. For a time he taught school at Mount Slaven before it was annexed by the town. Following this he was market clerk in Orillia, and later had a store on the corner of Mississaga and Albert streets, beside the house on Albert street in which he lived for years. Always fond of gardening, he had a market garden for a time and looked after several gardens for others at the same time. his youth he was an athlete and was proficient in broad jumping, running and throwing a ball. He was brought up in the Orange Order and held office for years. His father joined L.O.L. No. 296 of Orillia in 1854, and Mr. Teskey joined over 50 years ago. Like his father he was a member of the Church of England, and when young attended the family church, St. Luke’s, of Price’s Corner, when the Rev. Mr. Harris was in charge.Teskey was always interested in the militia and was a member of No. 7 Company of the Simcoe Foresters. In 1866 he answered the call and was on duty during the Fenian Raid.years ago his wife, Ellen Horne, of Oro, died, and Mr. Teskey went to live with his nieces, Mrs. Beers and Miss Caroline Teskey, at whose home he died.children survive, Mrs. H.G. Macpherson, White Horse, Yukon; Garratt, of San Francisco; Manley, of Cleveland; Clifford and Mrs. A.M. MacDonald, of Vancouver; Howard, of North Bay; Mrs. W.D. Dixon was in charge, and at the church he referred to Mr. Teskey’s sterling qualities. A large number of friends gathered in St. James’s including representatives of the Orange Order. At the cemetery, the Orangemen read their service.pallbearers were three sons, Howard, Manley and Charles Teskey, a nephew, George Teskey, of Sarnia, a grandson, Grant Macpherson, and a nephew, Reuben Teskey. |
