Marriage* | He married Lois Virginia Shier, daughter of Arleigh Elmer Shier and Helen June Zukosky, on 11 April 1943 in Lewis County, Washington, United States. |
Death* | CDR Donald James Buchanan died on 23 September 2020 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States; CDR Donald James Buchanan, USN (Ret.) passed away while hospitalized in Virginia Beach, VA, just one month shy of his 99 birthday. His long battle with cancer came to an end on September 23, 2020 surrounded by loving family and friends. The passing of his is wife, Lois Virginia Buchanan (Shier), of 77 years preceded him by just 14 days. Don joined the Navy on Dec 2, 1941 five days before Pearl Harbor. Following over a year of intense training he was deployed to Bombing Squadron 41(known as the Tophatters) on the USS Ranger. On April 11, 1943, while awaiting assignment, he married his childhood sweetheart, Lois Virginia Shier, in the small hometown of Morton, Washington. The honeymoon was short, but given the times they considered themselves fortunate to have had any time at all. His children David and Donna have written this snippet of his extraordinary life to honor his memory. The Navy determined that Dad fit the profile to become a Dive Bomber pilot. Dive bombers were a special group. Dad always said that fighter pilots were generally aggressive “go get em” types, but maybe not so hot about dropping out of the sky from 15-20,000 feet in a high-G dive and recovery. No competition there! This generation of aviators were true pioneers as they moved to break ground in the use of naval aviation as a new tool that would soon become a major contributor in the defense of our nation. The Ranger deployed to the British Home Fleet and operated in the North Atlantic from Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands of northern Scotland. They patrolled approaches to the British Isles and flew missions against German activity along the Norwegian coast. There were several reassignments into new squadrons and carriers as they transitioned from the Atlantic to the South Pacific. Here, they quickly advanced to the Solomans, Gilberts, and Mariannas. In early November 1944, the Air group transferred to the USS Bunker Hill conducting raids on Luzon, Formosa, and Okinawa. They relocated to the USS Essex in mid-November,1944 flying raids on Manila Bay and associated islands as they participated in the retaking of the Philippines. The Essex rode out Typhoon Cobra with little damage but participated in the tragic search for survivors of the 3 sunken US destroyers and the 790 lost souls. The war in the South Pacific intensified. Dad’s squadron survived a Kamikaze strike on the USSEssex as the war entered a new phase of Japanese desperation. It was November 25, 1944. On this same day, Dad received word that he had become a father to a healthy newborn son. As the war came to an end in September 1945, Dad entered a new waiting and training path to his dream of flying jets. It was a waiting game but he ultimately transitioned to jets in VA-54, where he was appointed as the squadron’s Executive Officer and then to VF-51, the Screaming Eagles. The Screaming Eagles are noted as the first Navy squadron to enter the jet age. In September,1949, the first F9F squadron was cleared for operations on an aircraft carrier. The squadron landed on the USS Boxer with Dad in the lead. This historic feat made it into the hometown paper. His career transitioned to Flight Instructor in Pensacola, Florida and Kingsville, Texas, until 1953 when he was reassigned to Fighter squadron 72 on the USS Bennington. In 1955 the squadron moved to the USS Hornet for a Pacific cruise as a show of force in response to Communist China activities. Over the next several years he was assigned to the Armed Forces Staff College and the Pentagon. In 1958, he began training for a new breed of jet at NAS Pensacola, NAS El Centro, and NAS Jacksonville. The new jet was the F4D Skyray. Unfortunately, on June 15, 1959, while landing aboard the USSEssex, off the coast of Florida, he suffered an catch-cable engine failure resulting in a catastrophic accident. He suffered critical injuries that would end his flying career. His disabilities would restrict him to administrative roles at NATO and the Headquarters for the Atlantic Fleet. He was a determined man, versatile, and saw no reason for self-pity. He made the best of a devastating life event and went on with his life. After retiring from the Navy in 1969, he led a quiet, ordinary, and fulfilling life surrounded by family, friends, and his dogs. He went back to college, earned a Master’s Degree in Industrial Arts at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he taught for several years. Although teaching was his vocation, life was his passion. Mom and Dad shared many common interests as their love was deep and they were truly partners in life. While living in France, Mom learned the fine French art of cooking with wine. So, Dad learned to make wine from fresh fruit. They planted Kiwis, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries, visited the Appalachian Mountain apple orchids every fall, and stocked up on cranberries and Scuppernong grapes when in season. When Dad was in winemaking mode, everyone knew. He commandeered the kitchen and committed to the complex task of producing some of the best apple sparkling, cranberry and fruity wines around. Dad bought Mom a green cattleya orchid for her birthday shortly after returning from France. She was so enthralled at it’s unique color and form that it began their lifelong orchidmania. He sequentially built and rebuilt a greenhouse to hold their growing collection of orchids from all around the world and soon thereafter they became active members in the American and Tidewater Orchid Societies. Dad fostered his lifelong interest in geology by joining the Tidewater Gem and Mineral Society. Subsequently my mother, family, and friends acquired a continuously growing jewelry collection as he developed a special interest in cabbing and faceting. He spent many an hour designing cabochons and calculating facet angles while sitting in his recliner with paper, pencil, and slide rule in hand. The project room grew and was redesigned into a dedicated outdoor structure as they explored their intense interest in stained glass crafting. They made everything from windows to lampshades. But Dad took a special interest in stain glass clocks They traveled the United States in an RV to satisfy their lifelong joy of camping. As the story goes, they went to a camping show and Dad turned his back. When he turned back around mother had purchased an RV with her sights on Canada, Alaska, and the Southwest. No argument. It was all over. Off they went, dogs and camera in tow. They toured the Southwest, West Coast, New England, Canada, and Alaska. They spent a number of their days collecting rocks from road cuts and local Rock shows and shops all along photographing their travels. While returning from Alaska they carried so much Alaskan Jade that the weight broke the front axle of the RV. After repair they limped home not having sacrificed a single pound of their jade. At the core of Dad’s very existence was his lifelong deep connection to animals. We can all attest to many accounts involving mice, birds, snakes, turtles, ducks, guinea hens, chipmunks, chickens, and turkeys. Then there were the Angora Sheep. He and our nextdoor neighbor. Phil, rented two, very large, male Angora sheep to clear the brush from a large naturalized area of the yards. When the wind shifted they smelled so bad that the neighbors started to complain. That ended that. They returned them to the farm. So, he turned his attention elsewhere. His intense love of honey led him to establishing beehives in the back yard. Then he and Phil decided to explore a natural remedy for controlling the mosquito and tick population- Guinea Hens. They built the chick pens, raised them against the odds, and then released them to roost in the trees. His friendship with Phil grew as the years passed. They were true “nature pals”. As a means of “helping”, Dad worked for Phil at his store Cape Henry Hardware as the first Postmaster and in a variety of all-around jobs. He was never idle. His love of dogs was fundamental to his existence. From the rescue of our first sheltie, Queenie, to the painful loss of his little “Maggie” sixty years later. Each touched him in their own unique way. They slept together, shared meals, and spent only rare times apart. All of his 12 Shelties were each unique and loved from the soul. At their losses, Dad grieved from the heart but once told his friend John that life was not infinite. Loss is inevitable. “You dig a little, cry a lot, and get another dog”. On April 11, 2018, Mom and Dad celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary surrounded by family and friends. It was a big bash at a local restaurant with a continuous slide show of their life together. Although they would have others, this anniversary felt special. Perhaps because they were still able to appreciate and engage in the festivities, perhaps because their health and memories were still present, perhaps because there were many who wanted to pay tribute to two great people who had survived much and given so much, Perhaps….? What Dad taught us was that the true measure of a person is predicated on what that person represents morally and ethically. Our father has always represented all that one might expect and hope for as a husband, father and friend. His life has always reflected his commitment to family. He has been the gentlest of souls and he has always held a belief in the sanctity of life. This is a man who had a chipmunk and deer as pets in his youth, carefully relocated spiders to the outdoors, and seemed to have had a quieting and comforting way with even the most disagreeable rooster or turkey. For his children, his legacy centers on his strong commitment to family and his loving and gentle soul. We do not expect that the world will much note his passing. For you see, he has outlived most of his generation. His family and those that know him, however, will fondly remember his many fine qualities. Many have offered condolences and asked, “What will you do now?” We will honor him by crying alot, remembering him fondly, holding him in our hearts, and going on to enjoy life with the same fervor and commitment as Dad did through a lifetime of challenges. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Lynn Buchanan; son, David James Buchanan; two grandchildren: Brian Geoffrey Buchanan and Maryrose Lynn Buchanan Hines; and three great-grandchildren: Alexander Colton Buchanan, Ethan Connor Buchanan, and Bentley James Hines. Our heartbreak cannot be measured. He will be so deeply missed by all who knew him for his warm heart and loving nature. He will be cremated according to his wishes at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Services will be delayed into the future to meet Donald and Lois’s wishes for a combined Celebration of Life and Memorial. |
